Steam dropping Windows 7 and Windows 8 Support in 2024 - because of course a game platform is locked to one shitty web browser

name me at least one mainstream distro version from 2009 that's still supported today
Probably a red hat with how corporate acts
I get it you love the new direction Bill Gates is going with his OS's he likes to have you on an Internet connection so he can hock you services from his friends. I disagree and think that the concept is a step back and it shows microsoft is pandering to people who never used an OS before and make it more like a fucking tablet.
Bill Gates hasn't been chairman at Microsoft for about 20 years

Yes, if I defend Win10 then I must be a paid M$ shill and I am vaxxboosted to the max by Billy G personally because I DARE to say something that goes against someone's autistic consensus.

That's a good sign to stop replying to you, I'm done engaging with a stubborn retards who inject unverified .dll's into an obsolete operating system because they have some autistic belief it's the best OS ever, instead of installing something like LTSC or switching to Linux.

There is a reason no one uses Windows 98 anymore, and we've reached the point that reason gets applied to Win7. If you can't accept it then either switch to Linux or stop using computers. I've said my part in this thread, I'll leave it to other fools to engage in these meaningless conversations.

Are you just going to point out the irrelevant part of my statement instead of actually engaging with what was stated?
It took ten months for you to give an actual answer instead of "it's shit", but yeah, I agree that the "always online" (attempts) and changing the interface into one that belongs on a tablet are ridiculous ideas. I don't use Windows on my personal computers and I don't think I'll be doing so anytime soon.

are you too young to know what a "STOCK PHOTO" is?
Has nothing to do with young. . .has a lot to do with DUMB tho.

I kind of like Win10, it's yet another of those examples where every other major Windows version is kind of okay, while the one in between is absolute shit.

This is why I switch between Windows and Linux.

Also to quit Windows 11 from automatically installing, turn off all that TPM shit in UEFI or whatever you have. It will literally refuse to install. Check if you are Win11 eligible. If you aren't, you won't get pozzed up with that AIDS virus of an OS.

Unlike most previous Windows ass-rapes, this one actually requires you have shit turned on on your motherboard that you can just easily turn off to prevent it from installing.

Thanks! That is actually a very easy and effective way to stop Windows 11 from being installed, while not impairing normal updates. Beats telling normies to watch out to not accidentally click on some upgrade prompt.

when Vista came out people cried about how WinXP was "the last best OS" so it's not like it hasn't happened before.
And at the time, that was true. Vista was absolute shit. Are you retarded?

The telemetry in win 10, the being stuffed with ads, the fucking bloat...it's shit. You'll pry my Windows 7 install from my cold dead hands. Too much creative software I use runs best on it. I have a Mint partition too for emergencies.

It technically runs fine without TPM and on a legacy MBR partition table, so I wouldn't really put it past MS to just say fuck it and drop that requirement at some point.

The main distinction there is that technology has progressed, and Win98 machines are limited by their original design specifications. With a 16/32bit OS and other hard limits you are limited in what CPU, HDD and RAM you can use, among many other things. Win7 is just being artificially fucked by MS and 3rd party vendors. It's the Apple mentality of "Forced (not planned) Obsolescence" taking over.

Probably already been mentioned so rate me late, but the reason Steam is using Chromium is for all the browser shit, from the store page to when you press shift+tab to quickly google something if you don't feel like alt-tabbing. Before 2010, everything ran on Trident (what IE is based on) and it was fucking garbage. But when Steam did the MacOS transition, they needed to have something that ran on different OS's. Trident wasn't compatible for Mac, and Trident is also closed source. Microsoft stopped supporting IE on Mac around the time Apple launched Safari. Chromium (then WebKit before Google forked it) was seen as superior to Gecko, plus it's cross-platform. But since it continues working, there's no drive to switch.

I would like Valve to embrace gecko instead, but fundamentally chromium "just works". If you hate Windows so much, look into a friendly Linux distro like Pop OS or something. Valve ain't got much say in this decision, and besides Windows 7 is old enough to attend high school, and Win8/8.1 were largely abandoned when Microsoft released Windows 10. If you're really that upset over this shit, you have got to be the most entitled fuck to walk the earth lmao

Is it over bros? Are all my games like fallout and the old Xbox ones gonna be defunt?

Windows 7 doesn't support hardware security features that were introduced with 7th gen intel and beyond. It's more than just TPM 2.0.

This is annoying. I actually use Windows 8.1 because I couldn't stand 10 but it was too much of a pain to install 7 so I went with 8.1 since it was still supported on my hardware. Interestingly more than 1% of steam users are still using Windows 7 which is a lot more than the amount of people using Windows XP when they stopped supporting that (0.22%).

The only thing "wrong" with Windows 7 is that Microsoft stopped updating it to support new CPUs even before its lifetime ended. For example anything that needs the AVX512 instruction set won't work on Win7, even if your CPU supports it.

Not relevant, new intel cpus no longer support it either.

The lack of an actual answer given to your questions reminded me of when I asked that same user why they're still trying to keep Win7 going when they needed help getting a dll for something. So far we've got "I hate Windows 10" and "Windows 10 is fucking trash", very constructive responses.

By that logic you have no reasons not to take the girldick irl.

Lets just hope windows 11 is the prototype for 12 and that 12 will be the new flagship OS that is not complete garbage. I am skeptical. The fact windows 10/11/12 want you to have a stable Internet connection is fucking blasphemy. It further provides arguments to my previous post about it siphoning off your ISP connection to have "active protection" when we all know they just want grandma to click of the shop panel and buy shit.
It's gonna be shit. Since 7 the UI has gone down the shitter. Look how many fucking clicks it takes to do things in 11. Look at the trash aesthetic trying to copy apple. Errors like "TEE HEE, SOMETHING WENT WRONG!" or messages like "Hi! We're getting your pc ready! Almost there!!!!" just insult and infantilize the user.

I have sperged about this before but they're failing because they're making software for social media using roasties and 80iq brown people. They should be making software for computer nerds, even if it's a separate sku.

Expect more layers of nannying, more online reliance, more telemetry. People think things surely have to get better. But they won't because now they're targetting the 80% of dumb cattle.

You will never be MacOS. You have no unix base, you have no terminal. You are a pajeet-made abomination twisted by trannies and retard product managers into a cruel mockery of Window 2000's perfection.

So your entire hatred towards 10 comes from that one anecdotal evidence of personal experience. I've never had such an issue with 10 so I might as well say Windows 10 is an incredibly stable OS given that's all the evidence you need to call it trash yet have no issues with 11 which is even more bloated than 10.

I mean, thanks for proving that the idiots in this thread crying about muh Win7 being the best last OS are completely deranged and live in some fantasy world. Then again when Vista came out people cried about how WinXP was "the last best OS" so it's not like it hasn't happened before.
You have failed to highlight any advantages for the actual user in windows 10 other than "it's new"

How about this, everything about the UI is objectively worse than 7 because they broke cardinal rules that have been studied and figured out since the late 80s. Nannying has increased to unbearable levels (how do I premanently remove windows defender?). Need to modify the iso pre-installation to remove spyrare, and better be careful because it might break a bunch of random shit.

There are real benefits to 10 because of the work they did optimizing and rewriting the kernel. Unfortunately they slathered on their dogshit metro ui and topped it off with the powdered tranny cum flakes that is the telemetry and nannying
