I have come to a new conclusion based on my writings here.

There is no such thing as a Democrat or Republican as we understand them, there's only establishmentarians and libertarians. You either gunt-guard for the establishment or oppose it. That would explain Steven and Cenk's behavior perfectly. Their positions aren't principled on a set of beliefs and ideas, their positions are principled in the continued success of their team. Sportsball comparisons are thrown around a lot, but this utterly unhinged behavior on part of both of them, all the ghouls disappointed that Trump didn't die, can only be explained in sportsball terms. It doesn't matter if facts are not on their side, their only purpose is to defend their establishment to the last gasp of air. The goalie in a hockey game doesn't need to be concerned that a bunch of players on his team are cheaters or morally unscrupulous in other ways, all that matters is not letting the puck reach the goal. The ideas and beliefs these political parties support are just the pucks on the ice, if the Republicans came out tomorrow as pro-choice, the Democrats would just 180 and become pro-life, because their ideas finding success is not the point, what matters is the simple defeat of the opposition.

We're on a similar wave. The commentariat class have to earn a buck so their motivations are not always aligned with advancing their own political view popularity.

But in general I like to completely throw away what they teach you in PoliSci 101 and use history instead as a base. If you dwell on political philosophy writing (say, Das Kapital) you're going to lose all the pragmatism that went into adherents of the philosophy. That's how you wind up with all the "no true Communism has ever been tried" bullshit.


If you take what the adherents of the four strains of American political camps say they believe in and then square it with what they campaign for, you arrive at this:

Progressives: Activists of the liberals, they are the most upset over dealmaking and centrism, because these are roadblocks to liberal experimental ideas they want to apply practically. Theory to practice is a very short distance apart.

Liberals: In the American mindset, they are open to the idea of government intervention in most social issues, using government capital to intervene in markets. But these movements are not done capriciously (since there will be opposition).

Conservatives: They are the janitors, more focused on retarding expansionism of government (yep, they violate this principle a lot lately... just the same as liberals adopt conflicting policy that flies against their beliefs). Deleting regulations and pushing down taxes is their main sell. But they don't come in and burn everything down (since there will be opposition). Their belief in government interventionism in markets waxes and wanes, but the base is usually skeptical of expansionism.

Libertarians: The most pragmatic of the bunch, mostly the activists of conservatives. They often see where government interventionism runs afoul of constitutional principles, individual liberty, and press conservatives to act. Their favorite slur is "statism". While they don't have any legislative power, they are very heavy in the legal system of the US, where they hold legislatures to account.


Trumpism has highly-disturbed the normal pattern of conservatism while at the same time the far-left and progressives have been beating the shit out of liberals, pulling liberals in directions that don't answer to the changes happening in conservatism. Even right how you have liberals boogy-manning neoconservatism (which barely even exists anymore). They're attacking conservative ghosts. Destiny is just making it worse for liberals.
