Yes however to give him the benefit of the doubt, I believe the story is that this ex was extremely physically abusive and always started it, and he would have to "choke her out" to defend himself. I will give him the benefit of believing him here, as I don't think he would ever publicly admit to physical violence if he really was the one starting it and choking her out without her laying any hands on him first.
I believe any and all of his abusive behavior is psychological. You could make the argument that his psychological abuses could push a partner into feeling so mind-raped and brain broken it ends up boiling over into them laying hands on him, but that's pure speculation.

Fair enough, I just see the evidence of psychological abuse as evidence enough of him being abusive, without having to tack on physical.
I worry about exaggerating the claims to a point where he can more easily wave everything off as "rumors" or "assumptions" based off of little information.
He's also a weak little gnome so I could see him resorting to psychological/emotional abuse to control people vs getting physically violent. At most goading someone into getting physical with him first, so he can then choke them out without guilt.

He's not a genius but he's smart enough to do things like wait until they strike first so he can claim self defense in court. Or wait until the millisecond someone turns 18 to avoid getting charged. Or not asking age at all when someone looks like a teenager so he can claim he doesn't know.
