>wants more SU despite fully knowing what kind of crowd it attracts

Nice try man but you can't have your cake and eat it too. SU isn't nearly as milkable for content as AT is. His resume is impressive, why revisit old conquests? If he's struggling this hard to get more work to will a revival of the autistnado that is this IP into existence, that's on him.
I occasionally chat with some family members that still work in the entertainment industry and the lack of post-Future SU content (outside of limited-edition apparel and video game updates) despite its "popularity" is a topic that came up recently. We basically boiled it down to different possible factors...
  • The amount of production-related headaches involved with SU were too much for CN and basically declared it an "untouchable" IP that's best left for tertiary uses like merch and social media posts.
  • Shifts within the company from CEOs leaving and corporate buy-outs essentially cutting off SU's blood supply and leading it to drop out of the corporate eye.
  • No one (Ian and Rebecca included) pitching potential SU continuations and/or spin-offs to CN, respect for the original showrunner be damned.
These are the main three that we came up with, a few others came up (like merch not selling as well as CN hoped it would and the viewership numbers not being to CN's liking) but we felt like we'd need to do some more research to confirm 'em.

Steven Universe was really good for one maybe two seasons and then it legitimately became one of the worst shows of all time, like impossibly bafflingly awful
I wouldn't go that far. Season 3 and onwards had their redeeming qualities, but the flaw were far too glaring to ignore in favor of them.

Especially the twist with Rose. That alone ruined one of the most interesting characters in the show and gave us a pretty terrible send off.

The show would've been significantly better if it was rated PG-13 because at least then they have a more expansive list of things they can write, show, and animate to tell a more compelling story rather than a turned-down kids' story. The only CN shows that I can think did this the right way was Regular Show and Adventure Time. Maybe it would actually be beneficial to have a reboot of the show.

While I agree on the age rating I disagree on the "more compelling story" bit. Look no further than [adult swim] that makes PG-13 content yet the only compelling stuff to come out of them has been from anime (before Toonami took the reins fulltime after hours), Genndy Tartakovsky and (early) Rick & Morty. Everything else is a stoner's comedy paradise.

A PG-13 rating wouldn't have made this fact any less clear: Becky was a bleeding heart limp-wristed leader who wouldn't utilize the full creative power she had at the time in fear it'd hurt feefees. We know CN let her do whatever the fuck she wanted in order to bring in press (there was lots) and merch sales (there weren't a lot). Even when they tried to talk her out of the gay wedding she got what she wanted and even another season so that "the network held her back!" excuse can't work anymore. You can still make great things with limited resources. AT and RS did despite coming in after "CNReal" wiped the cartoon slate clean, not having gays (until the end) or being woman-created.

As I said before, a reboot for SU can only work if the japs do it. But given the fanbase and who actually watched/consumed the series (hint: not kids), does CN really want the headache back after it went away?

It may not entirely be writing's fault. I think CN forced it to be short episodes, so a lot of them were filler.

Really felt like this show was meant to be a series, like Gravity Falls.
Steven universe is a fantastic series if you exclude the characters, the scripts, the writing, the art, the plot, the message and the themes.

Someone should take the setting, the backstory and the aesthetic and give it to someone who can actually write and draw, then we might actually get a good show.
The gem mythos is really nice, but I think they managed to completely destroy it with the last seasons/movies.

I like how the corruption is such a big threat is S1/2 and then gets completely forgotten later on.

I remember when people with the show turned out to be against the idea of hiring someone as a writer, because they thought it was important to tell the story visually as it's a cartoon.

Still amazed by that since it meant they were prioritizing the animation which was dog shit.

Are there even any anime with fat MC’s?

Necroing this thread for something interesting.

Cartoon Brew reported Sugar bought a place in LA for 2 million bucks. They already took down the article but the tweet is still up for anyone who can archive real quick. I spotted some familiar industry names like Lauren Faust telling them to take this shit down.

On one hand unless Becky revealed this herself, CB should not have shared this crap. On the other hand, I wonder what she's been doing lately to buy such a place now after SU has been over for a couple years and IanJQ's show was so short lived I doubt he made anywhere close to this much. There's more questions than lulz here.

EDIT they posted a retraction article.

No. Fuck that. Sugar basically confirmed she was "anti-capitalist".

Same principle for the BLM co-founder who bought a million-dollar mansion in the same area: it exposes her as a giant hypocrite.

This video, but replace the dude with Sugar, basically:

Ohh I forgot. But even without the screenshot I'd believe you. She's the mold for most online (wo)manchildren psychos and hypocrites. I also forgot she's a jew which also explains how she could afford the house.

‘Steven Universe’ Creator Rebecca Sugar Buys Cozy $2 Million House In L.A. Suburbs

By JAMIE LANG | 12/03/2022 2:03 pm | 5

Born and raised in Maryland, Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar, 35, will now call Eagle Rock, California home after purchasing a $2 million pad in the Los Angeles suburb.

Although the available information lists Sugar as the purchaser, the property seems likely to be a hotbed of incredible animation ideas, as she’ll probably be sharing the home with longtime partner and husband Ian Jones-Quartey, 38, a successful artist himself and the creator of OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes.
The modest house, which is under 1,500-square-feet and built in the 1930s, is hidden behind a group of jacaranda and lemon trees. There are also avocado, guava, plum, fig, orange and nectarine trees on the lot. It’s outfitted with three bedrooms and three bathrooms and, according to its listing, hardwood floors, a wood-burning fireplace, a vintage Wedgewood stove, and tons of natural light.

Outside, the home has a large wooden deck with a built-in banquette and a dining area with room for 12. There is also a kids’ play area and a half-court basketball court. The property also hosts a detached two-car garage which has been retrofitted as a guest suite, bathroom included.
There were images attached to the article that CB took from the real estate agency that sold the house, but it's making the text editor go crazy so they've been omitted.

Edit: they seem to have grabbed the info from a site called Dirt.com, a celebrity tabloid rag.

Here's a funny quote from esteemed Phineas and Ferb hater and Editor-In-Chief of the Cartoon Brew, Amid Amidi:

I think this story basically burned the last few bridges Amid had to the industry. In recent years he's been met with more hostility from industry people on Twitter, but I think this seals the deal of him and his publication being persona non grata among professionals in LA.

It's ironic how the writer linked CartoonBrew's interview with Ian from 5 years ago. That bridge is definitely burned now.

Glad you didn’t say the music, it’s the one genuinely great aspect of the series even if you despise everything else.
