If you really think about it Becky’s world building is paper thin.

Because she never intended to go beyond Beach City itself. It's clear Becky just wanted a comfy slice of life show with shades of alien/magic weirdness in the background, but instead remaining steadfast about being that way or reworking it to be more action oriented, she just waved back and forth between her vison and the other writers. That, and she just sucks at writing actual plotlines. If you really think about it Becky’s world building is paper thin.
Birth of a Nation” assembled everything learned at the summit of the silent era
There was never a specific number mentioned but it was known the state layout was different, and that there were fewer than in real life. I believe hawaii just straight-up doesn't exist physically, but I could be wrong about that.My question is: Was this something that was mentioned, or even hinted at in one of the *many* episodes I haven't seen, or was it just some random bizarre last minute bit of virtue signaling?
Last minute thing. You should know it like this all over the show. Drop interesting tidbits about the world beyond gem shit and do fuck all with it.I saw a random sampling of episodes (maybe like 4 or 5) from the first season or so of Steven Universe, and didn't really bother keeping up with it after that.
For reasons that I don't even fully understand myself, I decided to check out the last few episodes of the last season of the main show, the movie, and every episode of Future. Given my semi-unique perspective, I have some questions... but I'll limit it to one...
As of the end of Future, Steven has decided to go off and see "all 39 states". Yeah I get why the show did this, that isn't the question. (I can even see the rationalization in my head. "There were 11 Confederate states... even though that was more than 150 years ago and literally everyone who fought in the Civil War, or even legally owned a slave in the USA is long dead, hur de hurr... but those states are all still racist, so they don't exist in the best world, they were all just wiped out instead.")

The state the show takes place in is called Delmarva, fictional fusion between Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware (in real life, this is just a peninsula located between the three states) while there’s another state called Keystone and Kansas is now the movie capital of the world. So yeah it was alluded to in the past.I saw a random sampling of episodes (maybe like 4 or 5) from the first season or so of Steven Universe, and didn't really bother keeping up with it after that.

Yeah all of this smacks of retcon in light of Future; it’s weird how Sugar was all about peace, love and understanding for the original seasons only to go “What, Steven was never supposed to be a forgiving person. Where on earth did you got that idea silly?”Just reading Rebbeca posts about who Steven "Really is"

It does show she doesn't understand her characters.
The reasons why everybody says that Steven is a forgiving is because of him constantly forgiven most of his enemies and up redeeming them through the power of friendship.
Also, Steven does not have a self-sacrificing nature he's incredibly selfish.
He was constantly begging the Gems to take him on adventures even though they're dangerous but they ultimately cave-in and give in to his demands.
Even the episode "The Test" which was of the "writers" having to retcon Steven mistakes because he ended up destroying ancient temple only for them to change into a test he failed and he gets upset and want to prove himself only to fail again and ends up lying to the Gems because he doesn't want to hurt their feeling, all the while failing to understand this all started because the Gems have no idea how to teach Steven.
Hell in the Movie he straight up abandoned his duties as Diamond because he just wants to lay on his ass and look at the sky and even when the movies try to say he has more work to do in the future, well in SU Future he straight ups leave at the end of the show.
The only times he ever truly sacrifice himself for others is when surrendering himself to the diamonds and berates him for doing this because according to Sugar "he's putting himself in harm's way" but that's the whole point.
You put your own needs and yourself for the sake of others because that is what someone who is truly selfless does.
You think he would grow closer to the 3 people who are the closet thing to being his biology family epically after 2 FRICKEN YEARS but nope.Yeah all of this smacks of retcon in light of Future; it’s weird how Sugar was all about peace, love and understanding for the original seasons only to go “What, Steven was never supposed to be a forgiving person. Another point; according to Sugar, Steven had never forgiven White and the Diamonds for what they did, yet he worked with them to heal the gems and fix Homeworld for two years, went to them when he needed help in Homeworld Bound, called them family, and was at worst annoyed with them. You’d think he’d react differently if he had never forgiven them.
lol wutNot much to review now that it’s all over. Rebecca did give a post series interview; https://www.cbr.com/rebecca-sugar-interview-on-the-end-of-steven-universe/. It’s an...interesting read as seen in the little sample.
Because Kevin was a jerk to him and Connie that one time. In Tumblrland, that even worse then being a genociding dictator!lol wut
He forgave every character except for Kevin.
lol i really hated those 3 episodes with Kevin at the forefrontBecause Kevin was a jerk to him and Connie that one time. In Tumblrland, that even worse then being a genociding dictator!

When you put the Kevin and White Diamond incidents back to back, some disturbing implications are raised.lol i really hated those 3 episodes with Kevin at the forefront
In Alone Together, it didn't really seem that they really hated Kevin all that much and Kevin seemed disgusted by the fact that Stevonnie was two children, but all of a sudden in Beach City Drift they reverse the perspective to say that "Oh, Steven and Connie were really disgusted and Kevin was just a perv" even though that wasn't the case at all. It felt like that conflict came out of nowhere and was a sign of the writers just saying "Fuck it, why not? The more townie and filler episodes, the more we won't have to explain anything."
It’s the JK Rowling school of presentation; make up stuff to make your work seem deeper than it actually is, even if nothing in the story backs it up or outright contradicts it.And, maybe, Marty, but yeah.
Literally, every gem he is close with, outside the initial 4 crystal gems, has tried to kill him (and even Pearl almost did it when he was a baby), and he has being friendly and forgiving with all of them.
Bismuth tried to murder him in the forge.
Peridot attempted to kill him with some giants hands
Lapis almost drowned him.
Jasper has made several murder attempts on him and his friends.
The diamonds all tried to kill him with White almost succeeding.
Not to mention how Steven outright says to the yellow and blue: "We aren't enemies. We are family!"
Sugar is not making any sense.
