The PSA's are saying everyone is different and you should notice that though.
They're saying everyone is different and we should just stay that way. Don't judge people as individuals. Don't find common ground. You're defined by what you are, not who you are. Acknowledging differences is fine if it leads to understanding each other. These PSAs are saying to not question those differences. That sounds ironically backwards for something that's supposed to be progressive.

Final PSA. Don't really have any opinion on it, but damn is it nice to hear Greg again.
THAT'S the last one? Nothing with Steven or Connie (an actual fucking minority but not the right black kind) or even Stevonnie to try and shoehorn the genderfreaks in this since they literally muddied up the gay flag with racial shit? That's.....tame. I'm sure not including Steven for once was hard for Becky to do though. 🚬

As usual, Greg did what the gems couldn't do faster, simpler, cheaper and much calmer. Even if the message was still preachy at least it wasn't passive-aggressive like the others. Even his VA sounds more genuine than the other three.

You hit the nail on the head. Thanks to these psas, SU did what their fanbase does: preach about respecting differences and be kind to everyone then not follow through with it when things heat up (or when there's money and asspats to be made). Poetic.

Perhaps I'm late but whatever. Veridis Joe defends Steven Universe PSAs because Anti-Racism is good.
The comments mostly agreed with him:

When a brony of all people explains the problem better than you :story:

I just now realized that Steven Universe’s PSAs are teaching kids to not be “anti-racist”, but they’re also teaching them that there’s no such thing as gender since there’s multiple amounts of genders to be used for a teenage boy that has a gem in his stomach.

This does not really compute with reality, even if it is a “kid’s cartoon” after all.

Steven is only referred to as a male in-series, not sure where you're getting that from.

EDIT:
New character has been revealed for Unleash the Light:
Connie & Lion. More info soon according to the twitter account for the game. https://twitter.com/Grumpyface/status/1382056857494163456

What's the appeal of this show? Is the plot good enough to tolerate the eye rape? Or is it just an autism magnet like My Little Pony?
It's a coming of age story with gay space rocks. Not the best made show in the world, but also far from the worst. Unfortunately your last point is correct as I can personally attest to on multiple occasions in this thread but what's a fanbase without a little 'tism.

Steven is referred to as male but for some reason, his fusions with gems have varying genders. Smoky Quartz is referred as non-binary, Rainbow Quartz 2.0 is referred as male, Obsidian and Sunstone are referred as female. Like, what's the consistency here?

Well, there's They/them which IIRC get used the most in-show for fusions, or just their name if it's a Steven combo. I don't understand it myself, but I don't really care about pronouns in general so I just sit back and enjoy the fusion stuff. Always been a fan of that since DBZ.

If you want to get technical, you could say that all the fusions (excluding the ones with female humans) are all male seeing as Steven would be the only biological sex in the mix.

Huh, can’t believe I missed that one. Kinda fucked up they excluded the canonically black and brown people in favor of three rocks and Greg yet they still have the gall to say “Be an ally!” and “Don’t talk over POC”.

The appeal to a lot of people was the character driven drama and the lore and worldbuilding that’s teased throughout the show. Whether you find the plot good or not is something you have to experience yourself.
I personally got into it because I was into the artist’s earlier work.

Personally, while it's a shallow reason, I liked the conceit of personification re: gemstones (or precious metals in Bismuth's case) with a lot of them taking cues from their real life counterparts (see pic related for an example) It took like 4.9 seasons for me to actually get my birthstone in there, but it was worth the wait. Overall it was the characters that kept me coming back.

I remember I used to be real into SU at some point. It was the episode that introduced Lapis that made me interested in watching the show. I fell off around the time they went to homeworld. Not necessarily because of the show itself but more because of the shitty scheduling and constant hiatuses.
