Ten single-use plastic items blamed for littered European beaches are banned in the EU starting Saturday. Plastic straws, cutlery, cotton bud sticks, plates, stirrers, and balloon sticks are among the blacklisted products. The sale of polystyrene drink and food containers has also been banned as part of the bloc’s Single-Use Plastics Directive of 2019, which came into force on July 3. All types of oxo-degradable plastic bags were outlawed too, despite being marketed as biodegradable items. Brussels says the microplastics that they dissolve into remain in the environment for too long. Single-use plastics (SUPs) are to be replaced by their counterparts made from cellulose, bamboo, and other biodegradable materials. Alongside fishing gear, SUPs, which are primarily produced from fossil fuel-based chemicals, represent 70% of all marine litter in the EU. And the bloc’s data indicates that 85% of European beaches now have 20 or more items of litter for every 100 meters of coastline.

A host of other single-use plastic items have also faced restrictions under the EU’s directive. Producers of plastic bags, bottles, wrappers, tobacco filters, wet wipes, and other single-use plastic products would have to pay for the clean-up necessitated by these products and awareness campaigns on the harm they do to the environment. The European Environment Agency (EEA) earlier warned about the danger posed by medical-related plastics, as face masks and gloves became a daily necessity during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. But the current SUP ban doesn’t affect these types of products.

Further restrictions on single-use plastics will be introduced in the EU in the coming years, as the bloc moves towards its goal of circular economy, in which all disposable plastics are reusable or recyclable by 2030.

It's always such doomposting on A&H, so I thought, why not add a hopeful article? If you don't think banning single use plastics is hopeful kys.

Here on the wet coast of Canuckistan, I now have to buy garbage bags which will be used once, instead of using plastic grocery bags, which have many secondary or tertiary uses.
I've been to the beach a lot recently and there's hardly any plastic trash anywhere because Canadians usually throw things in the trash like civilized humans. Not sure why we we even needed to transition to garbage paper straws and the rest of that horseshit.

I've noticed most paper straws and cups that have any kind of durability are sealed with a thin layer of plastic anyway. And I doubt the inks and parafin waxes they use on them are likewise biodegradeable.

I also don't really understand how this is designed to make littering any less worse. All a biodegradable product will do is eventually rot. When some smelly yerp throws it on the ground instead of in the trash can where it belongs, it will eventually come apart into a wad of gunk, but its still going to take years or even a decade for that wad of crap to fully decay. Coupled with the fact that yerps can't stop littering to save their lives and you still have beaches and gutters clogged with trash, just instead of being plastic debris its paper debris. The trash hasn't actually gone anywhere.

Fully expecting many states to twiddle their thumbs and wait for a while. EU law has to be written into the law of each state first before it is in force, and many countries (Italy infamously) likes to take their time whenever it comes to implementing these rules.

Still dumb as hell.

Straws give you wrinkles around your mouth. unless you’re drinking a smoothie or milkshake stop being a faggot and drink from a cup like a normal adult and not a child with their sippy juice box

I'm not going to endanger people by taking a hand off the steering wheel when I want to have a fucking beer you retard

That's because it's the ocean that is dumping the crap on the beaches. Stopping current litter will take years to have a negligible effect
By the same logic, so will banning everything. But one path leaves you with cups and straws that dissolve before you finish your drink, and the other won't.

Bleeding heart environmentalism. Unless this ludicrous overconsumption ends and the Second/Third World get smacked to respect regulations, nothing will happen.

Your move EUniggers, I'll fight for Hungarian freedom with a large crate filled full of this highly valuable contraband.

And I'll burn any plastic I can find just to pollute and fuck you green kikes off.
