In my experience, the effect of having fan gear depends more on context than anything else. If someone's wearing a shirt for a series I recognize when I'm playing Pathfinder or at Anime club or something, I might strike up a conversation; if it's at the mall or the school cafeteria or some other location where I'm busy, they might get a "nice shirt," but that's it. Plus, Kayla needs to realize that she can't just expect someone else to do all the work for her; a lot of other geeks are going to be every bit as socially awkward as she is, so sometimes she's going to need to be the outgoing one.
I think Kayla mentioned that she's going to be starting college soon, so she should honestly focus more on joining school groups and taking fun classes than on attracting friends with magical nerd gear. That's a great way to find people who share your interests and it'll give you a setting where people are looking to hang out and make friends.

Kayla's inability to find friends has nothing to do with what shirt she's wearing, short of having adf or chris style fashion no one cares that much. The reason Kayla struggles to make friends is plastered all over this thread: she is a lazy, unpleasant, attention whore with a massively over inflated view of herself and a shitty attitude. If her personal hygiene is anything like as bad as her room she probably smells bad aswell. She is also horribly immature.
This is a grown adult so boring she has to make up mental illnesses and gender issues in place of hobbies and whose first response to criticism or disagreement is 'kill urself ableist abuser'.

In my experience, friends I made through chatting with over standard nerd merch all wound up being flimsy and ultimately got cut out of my life for being shit people. Just because you like the same pieces of media or are in a similar fandom really doesn't equal friendship material. Even in a place as laid back as the furry fandom I will chat with people but as far as friendship goes I keep them at an arm's length. The closest friends I made were through hobbies, mostly sharing artwork and talking over that. Others were through marching and concert band.

Yeah I think it's more what makes her approachable or not. It's not so much what's preventing everlasting friendships, but what's preventing people to even approach her before she starts rambling on and showing her true colors.

They can be alienating to even folks who like Animes and Vidyagames, too.....especially if all they like is Astarottes Toy pedo-moe shit and Call of Duty-esque spunkgargleweewee 'murikan gunkwank horseshit. The fanbase of either is deeply off-putting, and the overlap between the two fandoms seems to be larger than one would expect. (Hence why fedora-wearing MRA douches also tend to be "bronies")
I don't know what Kayla Marie Waller of Katy, Texas' taste in Anime or Games is, but it wouldn't amaze me in the slightest if her tastes were even more dire than pedo-moe/spunkgargleweewee.
