Stupid Game Rumors You Heard

that time when some dude on GTAForums called @gonnaenodaethat started preaching in riddles (in fucking Scots on top of that) that next GTA will be announced this March; when it didn't happen dude later blamed chink flu on his twitter (a)

Oh god, I didn't even think of the stuff I've seen on GTAForums.

I remember before GTA V came out, the mods started posting a bunch of pictures of Five Guys locations and the forums thought it was a hint to the location of GTA V. As if the GTAForums mods would have any of that info.

Also shortly after GTA V came out, some random dude posted very obvious bullshit "code" and posted that there would be a DLC where you played as Mike, his son and Niko Bellic robbing a bank in North Yankton. You would think the fact that this would be the dumbest, most boring DLC would tip people off on top of the very obvious bullshit code posted that was just jibberish but nope they fell for it hook line and sinker.

I just remembered one from my elementary school days.

Back when Resident Evil 2 first came out, some kid at school told me that if you let the "Game Over" screen linger for at least an hour then Claire/Leon would reanimate as a zombie. Since I didn't actually own a Playstation at the time it seemed pretty legit to me, only for me to later realize that the game boots straight back to the menu screen right after you die...

Around the same time I remember reading an article in GamePro or EGM or some shit that Akuma from Street Fighter was an unlockable character in the game complete with his own secret campaign like Hunk and Tofu. Instead of using weapons Akuma just shot Hadukens at everything since he was supposedly an overpowered AF character who could kill all the bosses in one shot. Obviously this was just some retarded April Fools prank but they did a pretty good job with the 'shopped screenshots since I really thought he was in the game back then.

I tried to float a fake leak online during E3 2004(?) where they showed the MGS4 trailer. The "leak" was that there was a twist to Snake's mustache: he didn't really have one, his facial hair, and they really showed off the hairs in that 'stache, grew at an accelerated rate between play sessions so he would eventually get a beard. And you could shave him. Clean shaven, mustache, mutton chops, full beard, yet another useless and expensive Kojima feature. If you didn't shave him at all for long enough you would one day load up your save and find that...
EGM were very good with those doctored screenshots for a time, as I said the "topless mode" DOAX screenshots looked convincing and their "Sonic and Tails in Melee" screens looked convincing as well.

Ive got a few of those. When I was a young kid I was told that beating the elite 4 20 times would cause Mew to spawn in cerulean cave in Pokémon Red. One that was really neat was the rumors about the some sort of twilight mask that was 'available' in Breath of the Wild. I know the person who started that rumor as an experiment in how fast the Zelda Wikis would add false information. I don't remember all of the details tbh.

All these stupid rumors that we fell for just tell me that we need to be making more of them to keep the tradition going.
The internet has become too retarded to have those for any more than a minute.
You just know there's at least five Captain Autismo waiting to pounce on any code as soon as you'd suggest there's a way to jiggle Tifa's tits

People believed Cyberpunk 2077 would be a functional game on release and run fine on last gen consoles and on latest hardware.

"The Japanese version of the Tellius games were full of gay."
Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn were not full of gayness. There wasn't a trans character in Radiant Dawn, either. That was just an okama(basically effeminate gay man) catboy.

There are still rumors going that Yosuke from Persona 4 was going to have a gay social link. It was probably just content intended to for a planned female protagonist.

Like many others in this thread there were tons of rumors at my elementary school about button combinations giving higher catch rates in pokemon. For us it was mashing the A button.

I was also too young for the mew under the truck rumor, but there was a kid who would always tell everyone these extremely convoluted bullshit methods for catching legendaries in pokemon diamond. The most memorable of them for me was how he claimed that if you went to a specific location, on a specific day, once a month, a giant temple would appear where you could catch manaphy. Even as kids we were pretty skeptical of these ridiculous stories, but we still tried them.

There used to be so many rumors for Fallout 2, some with legit looking screenshots. I recently tried to find wherever I used to go for them back in the day but it seems to be gone.

- Elvis actually being alive and in the game. It involved something with collecting all the Elvis portraits.
- BFG9000 that could be found somewhere in Sierra Army Depot

Also the fabled Casino location in Mafia. It was usually accompanied by a quite obvious photoshop. I think the ritual to get there was supposed to involve some static gate somewhere that you could open if you did a b & c or some shit.

It would've been hilarious if he somehow came up with the Mew on the Bridge thing.

My favorite rumour was the Prof. Oak fight by having all 151 pkmns, beating the Elite 4 and still keeping the master ball

I can vaguely remember reading somewhere about Raichu being an unlockable character in Melee, but unlocking it would replace Pichu in the character selection screen forever. I'm surprised I didn't believe it considering how dumb I was back then.

Sonic in Melee, Mew under the truck, and Tomb Raider nude codes are all the biggest ones I remember. Pokemon in particular was rife with many various rumors, and early Internet spread fake Pokemon around.

Half of us in school were convinced Marill (known as Pikablu at the time) was fake because there were false rumors about how to evolve Pikachu into Pikablu. It was a lot of fun.

What's interesting is I am pretty sure Oak actually was a planned battle, with a trainer sprite and team and everything. I guess he was meant to be the final boss, presumably after completing the Pokedex. I'm not sure why they didn't include it, that'd be cool.

IIRC, in 2000 there was this one magazine that focused on the pocketmons TCG that called Marill "Pikablu", which undoubtedly reinforced the rumors. I think that magazine was called "Beckett", and it also had a few pages with leaked names and sprites of the 2nd generation 'mons, and names are awkward transliterations of the Japanese names.
