Suggestion and Update Thread

IRC is antique and has caused problems in the past. The cool thing about AJAX based chat tied to the forums is accountability.

If you guys want to start up your own IRC, I don't give a fuck. spergzy is always around. The issue with me writing code for what exists on the forum currently is I don't know what the issue is, what you want done, or why you want it done. I need a perfectly clear description of what I'm addressing before I do a damn thing.

Seriously, what do you want? Just a second room? The ability to create your own rooms? A supporter only room? A room for each lolcow? What's the extent?
I wouldn't mind just a second room, one for overflow, or if people don't like the weenery that's currently going on in one they can switch. The chat is pretty regularly getting over 60 people in it at a time, so a simple split would make people stop bitching about the errors that come with that many people using it.
The ability to create your own rooms would be nice, I guess, but my god that's got to be a lot of coding. I think we'd all rather something simple that worked than something over ambitious and buggy.
I don't think it's necessary for a room for each lolcow, definitely not. Maybe possibly a "lolcow" chatroom though? Where people can go to sperg about Jace and Chris and other lolcows, whilst the other one is more general. But that won't be very enforceable, because of the nature of chatrooms they tend to go off topic...
How many people are supporters currently? that may be a viable option if a lot of chat regulars are also supporters, if not it'd be a bit dead.

(also Joey said he's been having errors with chat in FireFox, it not staying aligned right and having to scroll down for new chat messages)

okay so I might do this:

Chat - Everyone can access
Ballpit - Off-topic access required
Spergtopia - Supporters only

As much as I don't like the concept of hierarchical chat privs of an innercircle inside an innercircle, it would be a good way to break up the traffic.
Having just Chat and Ballpit alone would be an huge improvement for handling peak chat hours which gets up to multiple messages a second.

Can I ask why embeds fuck up chat so much? It's not a complaint or a suggestion, cuz ya if you take away embeds people will flay you alive. It's not something I notice too much unless I leave my pc on the main page for too long, images seem to fuck the autoscrolling, I assume there's no easy way to fix it?

that's good general advice but nah. I leave my laptop on the cwcki main page for hours idling, and even if one person posts a picture over that few hour time span, it fucks auto scrolling. The more photos, usually the further from the bottom. No photos, still autoscrolling. To be honest it's kinda become a personal chat-sperg-level-o-meter for me; if i come back to chat hours later and its still autoscrolling then its srs time.

And spoilers don't fix it

Chat will continually scroll down as new messages are added, unless you scroll up. If chat isn't scrolled to the very bottom, it assumes you're reading history and will add the line without pushing you back down (as it had in the past).

Images are not loaded when they're added to the DOM. Often times, the image will only load after it's compensated for height and will push the bottom of the chat off the screen if it's taller than the height of the chatbox. If this happens, it thinks you're scrolling up and will continue to append messages without moving you down.

The proper fix for this will be to compensate for height again after the image loads, but only if you haven't scrolled further up than before it had... It's really messy and could be resolved entirely by disabling images in chat but that causes people to commit sepeku.

Click the "Forums" button directly under the site logo and then click "Mark Forums Read" in the context menu.

On site view you need only hover over it for the context menu.

I'd hate to be that guy, (although let's face it, I love being that guy, which is why I do it absolutely all the time.) but I really don't see anything good coming out of that. General chat would be a complete clusterfuck, which is why the whole trusted user criteria is there in the first place. Having pay-to-access chat would just split the community, and quickly fall out of use since there aren't enough supporters to justify its existence.

My two cents would be to just leave chat the way it is.
