Suggestion and Update Thread

I propose a power-level rating introduced to at LEAST the Tumblr subforum. A negative one. I'd really like to read through threads without getting so-and-so's tragic backstory, but that's just me. Idk what the icon would be for that though. A tear?

EDIT: or like, an actual meter, like a thermometer kind of thing like this

Or iconify this.

I also think it should be a neutral like Autistic because otherwise people would be discouraged from using it when they should. People tend to reserve the negative ratings for pretty extremely awful posts.

Eh, I think it's too subjective, like the alog rating. Sometimes there's a fine line between sharing relevant information and powerleveling, especially with people who have directly interacted with a cow. Just tell people if they're doing it too much or rate it off-topic/autistic.

A powerlevel rating could potentially drastically improve post quality on some parts of the website. I know I've disagreed with you on this before, but I've changed my mind—if making it neutral means more people pull the trigger and provide correct feedback, then so be it.

Autistic and off-topic are almost always applicable in these kinds of situations, but I also almost always see that most people don't use them because unless you're @KingofManga420 your conscience tends to feel at least a little bit guilty for downvoting the valid experiences of trannies who cut themselves. A specific rating more accurately communicates "look it's terrible that you have BPD and your mother hit you and stuff, I'm so so sorry I give you my feels and condolences etc. etc. etc. but this is not the appropriate place to share," people feel less bad about rating, and they actually give proper feedback instead of cocooning the user in a circlejerk of Feels upvotes and making it seem like these posts are actually encouraged.

Oh no, it's not me who personally feels bad. If anything I'm probably a lot meaner than most people who rate, considering that I'll downrate posts that aren't either aggressively trainwreck dogfucking level terrible or by lolcows.

What is the point of downrating lolcow posts anyway

Like, they wouldn't have a fucking thread here if we didn't think their opinions were stupid.
Basically it's because lolcows are "safe". They're not really part of the community, so people can downvote freely without fear of backlash from their peers or starting a beef with the user at the other end since no one cares about what a cow thinks of them.

I rarely downrate lolcow posts myself. To me, ratings are about expectations. If the post doesn't meet the average expectations I have for content here, then I'll rate it badly. For lolcows, I expect everything they say to be dumb because why else would they have a thread here, and anyway 20 other people will be rating them dumb so it's not like I have to.

Personally, it lets out my feelings of "Oh my god, that was so incredibly dumb." That way I can get over the knee-jerk reaction and hopefully post something that's actually amusing.

I think that's the rating system serving it's function. I would rather a lolcow get 20 "dumb" ratings than 20 one-line replies saying "ur a stupid faggot lol." Of course that hasn't prevented thousands of replies to Marijan.

I still wish Null used my idea to rig up a bot for the Holden thread/s that auto-rated every post after page 200 of the original thread dumb.

It's basically voting for your favorite lolcow to be at the top of the list of dumbest posters. This is why we Shanerfags dumbrate everything he posts and are pissed he's been driven off so we can't unseat Holden. (Not going to change that to his real name with those subhuman slav runes.)

Hey, can we have thread tags in the ADF subforum? I have a few suggestions.

These would probably have to be modified before being implemented though. Not good at GIMP, so I don't really know how to do it.

Okay folks, the Powerlevel rating is now enabled and ready for use across all of the Lolcow subboards.

(please excuse my sub-par graphic design of the DBZ scouter)

This rating is currently:
  • Neutral scoring
  • Only available in the Lolcow Subboard
  • Activated as a trial period for one week
In a week I'll check back and see if the rating has had any sort of beneficial effect before keeping it around for good. If it ends up simply not being used I'll axe it.
Tweaks may also be made at this week long evaluation point before final implementation based on suggestions.

Suggested Use of the Powerlevel Rating

Again this is merely suggested use, ratings can be used however you want with the exception of committing rate system abuse.
The powerlevel rating has been designed to call out users who reveal an unnecessary amount of personal information within a Lolcow thread. This is based on our rule...
  • Hide your Powerlevel. Avoid revealing intimate, personal details about yourself in public boards. These threads are not your personal blog and we are not an asylum.
Even though we do remove posts for breaking this rule from time to time, the powerleveling that takes place is often not enough to warrant a full deletion. So instead with a powerlevel rating enabled, staff and users alike can give others a neutral tap on the shoulder to remind them that they may be going into too much detail about themselves.
In affect, this may discourage future powerleveling behavior.

Have fun

I'm starting to think that we need to implement a forum-wide rule on people posting for the sole purpose of gaining a lolcow's attention. It was annoying with Connor and Tumblrities, but people self-doxxing in the Shaner thread was the most autistic thing I've seen on these forums.

How about a "hide thread" function? Just to avoid people (Like me, potentially) posting in a thread just to say it sucks without contributing.
