Summers Game Fest 2023

so much for the copium from fanboys saying they aren't changing shit. I recognize none of this and I played ff7

Geoff, you rented out a stage to show a bunch of shit we already knew about, indie and early access shit

That money could have went to a number of way more productive things you fuck

Terrible I was hoping for a real game not another remake. If I wanted to I could play ff7 right now for free without having to wait until it releases.

Did they not play the remake?
Their comeback for people shitting on the remake was that Zack being alive was 'a trick' or something. I stopped caring when I found out it was an action RPG and then them shitting up the story made me care even less about it.

I mean they've released two versions of just part 1 already, right?

I'll wait until 2035 when the second version of the complete trilogy comes out so I can pirate it on PC

getting so sick of all the blatant pokemon clones
not even fucking trying to make something original
bonus points for having a maybe-tranny promote it
the absolute state of monster catching games makes me sad

EDIT: I'm going to elaborate since I don't just want to bitch and- on surface level- Beastieball seems different enough

To start with the positives: the creatures look well-rendered. The animation looks quite good and the backgrounds aren't bad either. I also like some aspects of the premise: the differentiation in hues and size is appreciated, as is the character customization, and the concept of "creatures that play sports" isn't atrocious. Also, I've wanted proper relationships in a monster-catching game for a really long time, and I'm glad that even one game is attempting to deliver on that.

On the negative side of things... holy fucking shit, those humans look ATROCIOUS. They are DISTRACTINGLY bad. Look at that fucking nose!! Look at the size of that bee-stung schnoz!! And those proportions! They're almost chibi but almost not, with the head being bigger than normal but all the hands/feet being kind of realistic and weird? It's very very clearly trying to be Animal Crossing, but they did the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl thing where they forgot to stylize anything besides the head so it just looks uncanny. Not to mention the line length of the humans being visibly thinner than the creatures, making them look out of place and disconnected from their companions...

Why did anybody think this looked good enough to be on the Steam storefront??

While we're on looks: the creatures look really bad. It's a given for almost any monster-catcher these days that that's the case, especially with indie projects helmed by people with no idea what they're doing and a crowd of yesmen for advisors, and I'm not expecting Pokemon quality from any of these... but for fuck's sake, you're not even going to try for Fossil-Fighter-tier bad? Not even "literal flame patterns on a Tyrannosaurus because this is for COOL KIDS" bad? Just birds(?) in boxer shorts and fursuits with faux-natural patterns? Okay, well...

Why do none of these creatures look like they're meant to be playing sports?

Yo-Kai look like mystical creatures. Personas look like demons (as do SMT demons). Pokemon look like animals or enchanted objects, Siralim and Dragon Quest monsters look like traditional video game enemies/fantasy creatures, Digimon look like whatever the fuck they want (but mostly robots/animals with guns) because they're digital computer creatures...
All of these franchises have monsters that serve a purpose and look like they fit that purpose well enough. Not every creature in these franchise fits the descriptions I gave to a tee, not every purpose is as well-defined as what I stated (Pokemon especially doesn't have many clear parameters for its creature designs which has caused untold amounts of damage to discourse surrounding its designs and whether they "fit" or not), but most of them can at least be passed off as fitting into their franchise's stated goal.

These creatures are just furries or normal fucking animals with clothes or a funny hairstyle.
I realize that's all most tumblr users think passes for creature design, and this shit is clearly made by avid tumblr users, but it doesn't exactly help your game sell when you advertise it as "a game about creatures that play sports" and 90% of your designs just look like normal fucking animals with an accessory or two if you're lucky. Making everything fat does not fucking count as making them unique.

These games live or die based on their creature concepts, and this shit just really isn't doing it for someone like me.
None of these designs look even remotely sport-oriented at all. The closest to that concept I can find is either the Fletchling rip-off with a helmet(?) or the mosquito with pompoms.
For such a decent concept as "sport-playing animals", they couldn't even get the bare minimum execution of it right. How.

There's also the obvious lookalike gameplay questions that I have.

Why is this a turn-based RPG if the concept is clearly suited more to action-oriented gameplay? Because Pokemon did it.
Why does every character have "typed" moves and a "typing" (both seem to have an attack/defense/support roshambo triangle)? Because Pokemon did it.
Why is every single creature based on a real, living organism and/or a slight distortion of one instead of being more mechanical or abstract? Because the only Pokemon that these hacks think of when they hear the term is shit like Ponyta or Yamper that's just animal + element with nothing more to it. (And there's nothing wrong with those designs, but the people who make these games focus disproportionately on EXCLUSIVELY designing animal + element or equally-derivative schlock, so I will bash it regardless)
Why does every creature have linguistic puns for names? Because Pokemon did it.
Why is it open-world? Because Pokemon fans have wanted an open-world Pokemon game for ages.
Why is every battle a double battle? Because Pokemon fans want every game to be doubles like Colosseum/XD.
Why are they advertising basic level scaling as a selling point? Because Pokemon fans have wanted basic level scaling for fucking ages.
Why are there "leaders" at a "league" that's actually also an evil corporation that's razing the forest to build a stadium?? Because the writers are hacks and Pokemon has a League.

I'll give the League thing a slight pass because this is sports-themed... but having the League also be an entity that's tearing down the forest and having getting to the top of it somehow correlate to defeating the big bad makes no fucking sense and I don't understand how someone thought that was a good plot. Why would anybody ever give control of a sports organization over to the best player, that isn't how this works (without various other factors involved). Getting dangerously close to "we need to cause the apocalypse now to save the world in 1000 years" levels, which is a feat considering how terrible that entire plotline was.

And of course it's fucking Kickstarted lmao. Just to really ride that bandwagon even harder.
At least the music might be good.

God, I am needlessly irritated over something as simple as a game genre I like going to shit. I want to get over this so bad even if every single new game announcement is just pouring way more salt in the wound.

I hate this trend of putting "1" at the end of the nth sequel. Xbox One, Battlefield 1, and now Mortal Kombat 1.
Battlefield 1 was clever because:
1) Play on words of World War I
2) Symbolically a prequel, since it's the earliest any Battlefield game had gone or ever realistically will
3) Acted as a sort of soft reboot of the franchise, although they went on to ruin that immediately afterwards by calling it Battlefield 5 instead of Battlefield 2 (reboot)

reading the presskit confirms that the game also has a trio of color-coded starters (red blue and yellow)
because of course it does
Pokemon did it, so why shouldn't this game? :sighduck:
starters.gif
the creators also made Wandersong and Chicory: A Colorful Tale, so I'm expecting a very saccharine and mediocre experience that has a lot of potential for more that it just never ever fulfills
at least the music might be decent (composer did Celeste, some Minecraft/Deltarune stuff, apparently also Steven Universe: The Movie? I don't hate her work and the trailer music was okay, so...)
