Plagued Super Smash Bros. Community

DRAMA TIME

The context is that back in 2016, Hyuga (Mexican Toon Link, top 50 in Smash 4) was accused of sexual assault. He was banned from playing in the community for one year by most prominent TOs. This ban ran out and he's been playing in America again. People are mad at the TOs and one of the more prominent ones, Bear, came forward to explain his side of things.

the 2GGaming tournament company made their own post flexing on how long they're banning Hyuga, something Bear correctly interpreted as a subtweet and responded too

This sparked a debate with some very dumb arguments and salt all around.

I always knew the competitive smash community was cancer....question is...is the Smash community more cancerous than the competitive pokemon community and by that i mean places like Smogon

not even the right game, this is Smash 4 drama meaning he's posturing over his position in a community where everyone's been around about three years
Holy shit. I thought he was a loser acting like he has the biggest balls on Earth because he's good at melee; and somehow he turns out to be more pathetic than that.

@InLivingTuna, did Hyuga eventually come back to competition? I remember when that whole thing went down, but it's been awhile since I followed competitive Smash4.

Also, who would you say is the biggest cow in Smash4 currently?

Hyuga still plays in Mexico but he hasn't been in America since January. He's lost his edge a lot and he gets bopped by Mexican randos these days, last Smash Factor he got 33rd.

As for the biggest cow in Smash 4, probably Manny Medina/StaticManny/Manny/Static/All Might/Oni Heero/toomanynames/Spark. He's always salty af on Twitter, and he got kicked out of Smash Con for getting into a fight with some other player.

so im a melee player

im active in my region, frequently attend tournaments, etc. etc.

i've only ever met actual genuine lolcow tier people in the sm4sh scene. like obviously yeah melee has some pretty embarassing people in it but by and large the playerbase is mostly just college aged random dudes and stoners from what i've seen. the most normie competitive scene ive ever run into by a minute.

even the most public and blatant autist in the melee community, mew2king, is essentially harmless and made himself a pretty comfortable living off something he's undeniably good at.

smash 4 is like a secret club made up of every kid you tried to avoid in high school except they take themselves really seriously and get aggressive whenever melee gets brought up. i feel like there's new drama of some kind in it every week. the game's fucking boring and not suitable for competitive play.

ive seen tr4sh players throw controllers, throw chairs, show up to tournaments in drag and cry when misgendered, try to make people in the middle of melee sets quit out to play their sm4sh doubles or whatever, and one extremely notable time when this one edgekid made an ugliest gf tier list for all the players in his region and almost got jumped for it

The gf list was just a blank piece of paper, right? None of these people could possibly attract a mate through the miasma of stench.

shitposting aside you gotta remember that the online community =/= the IRL community in a BIG way. this thread obviously paints the ugliest picture it can manage, that's kind of the point, but it helps to remember that if you actually go to a melee event its going to be a hell of a lot better than say a guilty gear tournament.

melee was built as a community on IRL tournaments, you couldn't get away with acting like a horrible embarassing shithead or nobody would want to play with you or go to your events. people would get banned for acting like psychotic lolcows or scumbags. there was no nintendo telling people when and where to run events, people were doing this shit out of bars, card shops and basements.

im not going to cry like a bitch because of a KF thread obviously but from my perspective there's a lot of misinformation itt at least regarding the actual tournament scene

Why are they calling him a sex offender already when he was just accused? What is it with people and jumping the gun the second a sexual assault/harassment case? And even if he did do it he should still be allowed to compete. The amount of pure :autism: from these people is outstanding.

No surprise that Melee has the most cancerous following. Melee has a special spot in my heart because of childhood nostalgia, but it had some major power imbalances. Characters like Pichu or Mewtwo were just utter garbage with no practical advantages, and then you had Motherfucking Marth the Godhand. I mean look at this shit:

Because the characters were either “good” or “broke”, there is a small pool of characters that are decent so as long as you know their ins and outs, all you have to focus on are mind games and edge guard. Take away items and non moving stages and you’ve pretty much canceled out every confounding factor, and you don’t have to worry about dynamic gameplay and adapting. It sounds boring and formulaic.

I’m going to hazard a guess that Melee is the crowd favorite because it wasn’t as bad as N64 smash, had okay graphics and the nostalgia factor, and there are really only a few characters you can perform well with in a competition.

I really never understood the point of the whole "Competitive Smash" thing. I dipped my toe into the "For Glory" pool in Smash 4, a mode built around the "competitive mentality" (flat stages and no items) and by god it was boring.
In the end, it really comes down to your preferences. Even before I knew about a competitive scene, I always turned items off with friends, for example. Despite all the retarded shit in the community, I still go to tournaments in my area since your local scene is always gonna be leagues more fun than the larger community.
