do you guys wanna know something interesting about Super Smash bros for the N64?
i hear that peach, bowser, wario, zelda, king dedede, mewtwo, marth, and pit were planned to be added as playable characters. but they were scrapped because sakurai didnt have enough time to add them into the game. but they did get added in later installments. also. final smashes were planned to be introduced in 64, but that got scrapped too. but it was brought back into brawl.
also, there were more planned characters for melee.
Leif from Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 was intended to be added, but sakurai decided to add roy instead because his game, the binding blade, was soon to be released in japan.
Snake was also asked to be put in by Hideo Kojima when he was still with konami, but was scrapped because sakurai didnt have time to be put in. he was added in brawl though.
Sonic was also requested to be added, but was scrapped because just like snake, sakurai didnt have time to put him in. he was added in brawl.
other retro NES characters like Bubbles from Clu Clu Land, the balloon fighter from balloon fight, excitebike, and urban champion were planned to be playable in addition to the ice climbers.
another character named Ayumi Tachibana from the famicon game, Famicon Detective Club, was also planned to be added as a playable character.
now planned characters for brawl
Villager was planned to added, but sakurai scrapped him, saying "he wasn't suited for battle". probably couldn't think of his moveset at the time.
miyamoto requested sakurai for pac man to be added as playable, but sakurai couldn't because he could not think of a good moveset for him.
dixie kong, toon zelda and toon shiek (possibly tetra) were planned but scrapped.
and characters that were planned for smash bros for wii u and 3ds
Takamaru from The Mysterious Murasame Castle was planned to be added as a playable character, but sakurai decided not to because he wasn't familiar with the west.
