I'm thinking this announcement was made to change places a 3rd party that was supposed to be fighter #6 and they got pushed back to a later time, and also why the release is so far off. 3rd party characters require a lot of back and forth between Sakurai's team and other companies, including meetings and quality checks, which isn't feasible to do in the current Corona-chan fiasco (indeed Sakurai already said there will be delays due to the virus). So they changed gears and went with an in-house IP to ensure something's still coming down the pipeline for the foreseeable future.

EDIT: There's also the fact that they didn't even name who it is, just "Character from ARMS." Definitely smells of a last-minute change of plans unless it's somehow another Bowser Jr. situation with alts.

I'm indifferent to ARMS but I am excited for how the character will play, because I'm certain it will be interesting.

I'm surprised it took this long for an Arms fighter.

They actually wanted an ARMS rep before, but had to settle on an assist trophy since it was too far into the game's development. Same goes for Xenoblade, so there will most likely be a XC2 rep somewhere down the line as well.

The day that Elma get announced for Smash is the day that XCX is announced to be ported to the Switch

A lot of Byleth is great but the one irk I have is the Final Smash with Jpeg Sothis.

It could honestly be both "the ARMS rep is most of the roster ala Bowser Jr" and "This is rushed due to a fighter being delayed". As for said delayed fighter...

It's probably Doomguy. The "delayed" theory makes the most sense for him considering Doom Eternal was supposed to come out back in November on every console including Switch, but then got delayed to March with the Switch version TBA. It ticks off all the usual third party Smash trappings, like a classic game (which Doom definitely is), a game to promote (Eternal), a genre without representation that Sakurai likes (He namedrops Carmack in the context of great developers born in 1970, he's also gone on record about enjoying games like Halo, HL2, and SWAT 4), and would fit in the original third party theme of "shocking" (A game infamously called a "murder simulator" showing up in a family game sure counts). Byleth might also be a victim of this delay herself, particularly with the weapon switching mechanic. Weapon switching isn't very important for a strategy-RPG like Fire Emblem, but it's a core mechanic of first person shooters, especially a FPS like Doom.

The weapon triangle is (well WAS) pretty important, especially on higher difficulties, and even now without said weapon triangle weapon switching the only real way to stop Maddening from butchering you until you unlock the skills you need.

Different weapons have different weights and power; a steel axe is more powerful than an iron one (so a single hit does more damage) but it's much heavier so if the unit's not strong enough then you'll end up losing speed and potentially taking more hits, etc.

I honestly can't wait until Ultimate gets it's own equivalent of Project M - mostly just because of the atrocious 6-7 frame input delay. Combine that with further delays caused due to poor netcode, and the controls just end up feeling unresponsive and sluggish. I've heard similar complaints from countless other people.

Finally! Pokemon is having another announcement next week, right? If so they should just do a Nintendo Direct, maybe show off more Paper Mario. Seems weird they have two separate announcements.

Either way cannot wait to get the fighter, play Ultimate for one day, then drop it for SpongeBob the next.
