Super Smash Brothers 6 Speculation Thread

I want Smash to go back to its roots. Ultimate is great, but am I the only one that feels like Smash Wii U + 3DS and beyond feel like a different route? I feel like competitive Smash ruined the series as games slowly got built more to have bigger and more “balanced” rosters than focusing on being a crossover. While fans want to separate them, it is very easy for me to see how we went from Melee to Brawl. Melee’s competitive seems accidental. A big focus on Melee was Nintendo history and making the most of the IPs. Trophies, obscure characters, etc.. Smash was not just a fighting game, but a celebration of Nintendo’s history up until that point. Brawl took everything Melee was doing and expanded. Trophies now also came with stickers for even more Nintendo history. Hell, we got a whole ass catalog of every game Nintendo made prior to Brawl to really add to the experience. Subspace was more or less the natural progression of Melee’s Adventure Mode, being an epic adventure with all the IP. Even the roster felt like a continuation of Melee. Melee focused on the big boys by adding Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon characters. Brawl filled in the B-tier by adding to Metroid, Donkey Kong, Mother, and Kirby. Music was also upped in Brawl, and while I love Ultimate’s soundtrack, the need to make every track a fight song ruins the beauty of having slower pieces like Brawl did.

Brawl is my favorite Smash, so I would love if Smash 6 is a reboot that brings back many of Brawl’s strengths. Just reintroduce fighters, clean up ones like Mario that are extremely dated in terms of references. Most of all, I want a focus on platforming again. I want a mode that mixes the adventure of Subspace with the franchise representation of Melee’s Adventure Mode. I want an actual boss rush, not a Sephiroth classic mode route, wtf. Also can bosses raise up lesser Nintendo IP again. Remember when Mother got a boss battle, and Metroid got 2.

As for characters and stages, I just want Endless Ocean to be represented. Ultimate didn’t even have the courtesy to reference it in spirits when it was a decent seller with 2 entries.

There won't. Maximillion Dood did a video on this exact subject:
TL;DW - Ultimate was a fucking pain in the ass due to licensing issues regarding specific characters and to make something just as good as (if not better than) Ultimate, the process would be just as grueling, if not worse. Apparently certain companies are just a fucking headache to work with and won't cooperate as easily as others. Sakurai is burnt out, and doesn't think Smash will be successful without him.
Further proof that putting emphasis on third parties was a huge mistake.

Sonic is a good choice, but Snake (despite playing very fun) is a strange choice to put it nicely.
Is it wrong to think that Snake was a great choice. I used to hate his inclusion because muh Nintendo history when I was a young Nintendo fan, but now, I really appreciate it. Snake was such a wild card, going against so much of Smash. He was not very Nintendo, came from an M rated title, and was the first 3rd party. He never should have worked, but his contrast honestly makes him fit in more than half the 3rd party reps. Him being a strange choice sort of works in his favor and I believe I am not alone in saying that he has become a classic rep in his own right.

Plus I don’t believe there was any better way to introduce the concept of getting 3rd party characters in Smash quite like this.
A Sonic trailer would be too plain with the only thrill being it’s Sonic.

Edit:
I should also say that the effort put in for Snake was also a factor. Snake, more so than any other 3rd party, has actually interacted with these characters, making him fit way more. The Subspace and Codecs are huge parts of why he works so well as we actually get him speaking on and hanging out with the characters. No other 3rd party gets this feeling of actually being a character, they are nothing more than a roster slot. While I like most of the 3rd party, many feel there because unlike Snake, they are just another character on the roster. Steve could probably fit better if we go scenes of him building houses in Animal Crossing or something, rather than him plopped on the roster with no context.

I was trying really hard to not call him a bad addition, because when I was a kid I thought it was the coolest shit ever to see Snake in the game. I didn't even mind the "Nintendo history" thing too much, since there's a whole MGS game exclusive to the Gamecube.

It's crazy how blatantly lazy the future 3rd party characters are in relation to Snake's addition. Being in SSE and having all the unique codecs did go a long way, I remember going through the whole roster wanting to hear the codec for everyone. Looking at it that way, he was a really welcome addition to the game. The best way to describe it is that he was way out of left field, and that was a shock to many.

There are still more characters coming to Smash Ultimate. Pump the brakes.

I wouldn’t say the characters themselves are lazy, more that Smash has gotten unambitious in recent years. The characters function and are great representations of their titles and show quite a bit of personality. The issue is that Smash is very limiting, only so much can be done to fit this cast together, which was why story modes were such a great idea. Now there is no Subspace, how the hell is one supposed to gauge how Simon would interact with the cast if he is nothing more than a fighter. It is sad because certain trailers show the potential for characters to fit in, take the Simon trailer where it lays out what could have been a cool Luigi-Simon team up in something like a Subspace. The issue is all ambitious crossover elements have been stripped out.

World of Light brought back cutscenes, but it starts where Subspace would have entered its final act. It is literally a row of characters walking to beat the bad guy, just like Brawl did with Tabuu. The issue? Brawl actually had a series of events to show how and why characters were there and together, sure some of it was thin, but it at least had build up. Ultimate drops the player into a scenario where everyone knows each other and are friends I guess. How or why is any of this happening? I don’t know, just go with it to play the hastily put together campaign to collect JPGs where all effort went into the 8 or so bosses.

This is why I want a fresh start with Smash 6. The roster is so bloated that they lack the ability to do anything interesting with it. The games are made for consoom and competitive types, both of which seem to think Ultimate has failed them in certain aspects.

I really hope they introduce counter as a standard move (Shield + B?). Feels like 1/3rd of the rooster's down-B are just a counter move.

Top 5 most requested first-party characters for Smash Bros that still didn't make it:
1-Isaac from Golden Sun (Dead franchise from GBA)
2-Dixie Kong (Secondary character that wasn't even on DK64)
3-Bandana Dee (Secondary character from modern Kirby)
4-Elma from Xenoblade Chronicles X (No Switch port=Dead franchise)
5-Ashley (Only one that has a small chance but also requires original moveset)

Back on Smash 4, before Ryu/Cloud reveal, character requests for third-party was usually safe stuff like Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Cooking Mama, Yokai Watch, Travis Touchdown, Wonder Red, Rayman etc., with the exception of Phoenix Wright (and maybe Travis) most of these choices nowadays are from dead franchises and would age terrible on Smash.

Keeping all of these in mind I can see why Sakurai went with the exceptional third-party route: easier movesets to implement and more profitable, even if you had to duck out with Squeenix to get them in you get a bunch of fanboys drooling on their hype trailers and imported movesets, also Sakurai was always the type guy who never wanted to make sequels, so I can see part of his pettiness showing by picking hard to license stuff just to put a halt to the franchise with his decisions.

Finally there is people having nostalgia about trophies and proper adventure mode.
-The trophy element on the series got "soulless" with each installment and there was nothing that could be done, back on Melee we had all these original quality 3D models from multiple 2D characters with very technical descriptions with non-canon trivia, by Smash 4 everything turned into lazy models ripped straight out from their games with lame descriptions from localization teams because the higher-ups probably disliked the technical non-canon trivia from back the day.
-Adventure mode is a funny thing, people liked a lot the story from Subspace because of the character interactions, but I always thought the ending was lazy and rushed, with the third-party restrictions it wouldn't even work properly nowadays, even back on the day Sonic was shoehorned on the last minute and Snake only had special treatment because Sakurai and Kojima were best buddies.

I can see people wanting a soft-reboot because they want to see the misadventures of Mach Rider and Karate Joe but at this point in time I doubt the autistic masses and executives would give a shit so tough luck pals, better stick to these fan-comics that try to be the next BrawlintheFamily and call it a day.

I don't think we'll get another Smash until the console after the next one. The next Nintendo will probably be out in a couple years, Ultimate will get a port of it and will be the Super Smash Bros for that gen.

What I can see, and am surprised wife yet to see, is at least one of the "Mario" properties being expanded into a Nintendo only Smash. Smash Party, Smash Kart, Smash RPG.

Mario Kart 8 was heading in that direction.
Mario Kart is dead now, apparently? Really, I have no idea what is going on with Kart. They typical have a 3 year schedule for new entries, but ARMS was seemingly the last game from the team and it came out in 2017. It seems some major restructuring happened though, so who knows.

They really should go all in on Nintendo karts at some point though.

2-Dixie Kong (Secondary character that wasn't even on DK64)
3-Bandana Dee (Secondary character from modern Kirby)
God I wish these two made it. Dixie was a more relevant character than K Rool thanks to Tropical Freeze, but still didn’t make it in. It sounds like Sakurai and team do not give two fucks about DK though as his western influence has made it hard for the Japanese to work with.

As for Bandana Dee, I have a feeling Sakurai just really hates modern Kirby. Anything past Super Star gets minimal references, at best a final smash. Assists, stages, and characters are always implemented to stroke off his 4 titles.

they either gonna port ultima for the next ten years or forced to remake it beacuse of licensing issues. cant see them making a downgrading version out of fear of backlash.
It could work if they replaced the "licensing issues" slots with either
  1. Work with 3rd parties that actually WANT to be on Smash and would happily cooperate with Sakurai/Nintendo. All Nintendo would have to do is announce/tweet that they are looking for 3rd parties to help them out, and then just sit back and see who exactly responds back to them.
  2. Stick with their own IPs. Not only are their plenty of Mario characters that people actually WANT but didn't get (Waluigi), but they could also dig deep into their vault and revive an IP and/or character that has been long forgotten and give it a new coat of paint with some slick moves.
If they do the former, it would be good publicity for whatever 3rd party is ready and willing to work with nintendo, which means more people buying said 3rd party's games in show of support. And in regards to the "licensing issues" characters that got axed, of course Nintendo would have to make a statement about it, but after that, they would have washed their hands of the whole affair.

Then all you'd have left is a realy pissed-off rabid fanbass banging on the doors of the 3rd parties yelling "WTF IS YOUR PROBLEM?!?!" because they didn't want to play ball and keep those characters in Nintendo's fun smashy smash game

More Konami and Capcom characters please, in addition to Simon and Ritcher I want Soma Cruz and Alucard and maybe even get really crazy and add Pyramid Head or Heather.

With Capcom I want Chris, Jill, Dante and Frank West.

And we need some fighting game females, Chun Li, Cammy, Morrigan and Mai.

How long will it be until we get Crash Bandicoot and characters from Shin Megami Tensei in a new Smash Bros. game?

What I hate about SSBU is the artificial inflation of the character rooster with echo characters. (Characters with identical movements)

We already know that Dark Samus could be an alternate skin of Samus, not a separate character. It works the same for Villager and Female Villager, female Robin, etc.

So I feel a desire to jump in and say a few things myself. The big issues with the theoretical Smash 6 comes down to roster issues pertaining to echo bloat and third-party complications. These two issues will plague any future Smash games due to fanboys wanting their echo to stay or being mad that X 3rd-Party Character didn't make the cut, so there must be decisions made on how to work on trimming the fat from here on. My two ideas are as follows:
  1. Remove Echo Fighters as unique characters, and instead merge them into different balances for their base character, similar to what Smash 4 did with modifying specials or MKX's Kombatant variations. This trims down the FE roster's physical presence while not removing notable Lords from the roster; it even has the potential to allow for new characters to be added to fill out those variation slots, such Funky and Dixie Kong. This idea may or may not be because I've been interested in the idea of a Celica Echo for Robin without wanting to oversize the roster.
  2. Prioritize historically cooperative third parties if you really want third-party characters in the game, and be sure to pin the blame on trimmed fighters at the feet of those companies that were uncooperative (which really just means Square). Otherwise stick to popular and unique Nintendo characters that are not yet on the roster, which means Waluigi should be at the top of the list for new fighters
These two moves should help with roster issues, and hopefully fix the third-party craze that plagued Smash Ultimate until Sakurai was forced to sell his soul to Disney for one of the most ridiculous-looking Anime Swordsmen in history.

Geno is a 3rd party character. Personally, I'd much rather see 3rd party characters than 100 more new Pokemon and Fire Emblem characters. It is riskier though, because you can get total dogshit like fucking Steve.

Still, I'd take the risk of suffering some shitty Fortnite or Undertale characters if it means Zero, Crono, Geno, Raiden, and Bubsy Conker have a chance.

I'd like to see a proper story mode return. Hopefully with actual dialogue and a better story.

Oh, and it's time to include characters that didn't originate in video games. Goku needs in.

I want Capcom to license the Smash Ultimate engine and make a Megaman Smash in a "fuck you Inafune" kind of way. They already did it with Megaman 11 so continue the trend!
