I've noticed many video games have a lot of weird symbolism put into them ranging from weird devotion to one person to full blown revelations. One of the best examples I could come up with is Omikron: The Nomad Soul. A video game that came out in 1999 (that is known to have David Bowie involved in it). People are finding out the similarities of it's symbolism to the COVID-19 pandemic that happened 20 years after.

Another game I could also mention is a lot more weird and obscure. innocent Eyes (yes, it's titled like that) is a very unsettling eroge with a lot of symbolism (more interesting than the ones put in edgy horror games). It's this weird kind of game hard to put in a way but I can tell you after playing it the symbolism goes way deeper (Lab suggests Tartaria, Tuning forks could reference sacred frequencies, Bottom floor looks like a canopy of hell, villain protagonist said to be a clone, isn't as oppressed as first thought and can be an android (might be a reference to transhumanism or the antichrist)). It was released in 2000. The narrative feels so unclear and questionable as it's an eroge (And I grown a massive contempt for lust as of recent) and I only know a few other games that does something like this. The Scenario director behind this game has commented his disgust for the war crimes done by the allies against Japan so it suggest biting the neoliberal secular hand that fed him before (Reminds me of the things said by Kanye West).

Or he's just another Jap butthurt about the oh-so-terrible nukes while conveniently ignoring the Rape of Nanking, Unit 731, etc?

Maybe not what you're looking for but I remember years ago playing Halo 3: ODST and finding its dark and solemn atmosphere more haunting than any other of the Halo's. The audio logs in particular were such an interesting take on what the normal citizens of a mega city would feel and react to a genocidal alien invasion. But this video explained such an interesting yet surprisingly subtle aspect of how the circles of hell are baked into the games atmosphere and story. It was kinda neat to see how such a major part of the games design in religious symbolism was missed due to players focusing on the Halo run and gun style of game play.

Another fun aspect of ODST that I learned after replaying it was that those collectable audio logs have in game cues when near by as the cities AI will light up cars, traffic lights, and any technology around to alert the player controlled Rookie, embodying the role of Virgil guiding a lost soul through hell.

There is an ongoing group dedicated to debunking the allegations against the Japanese regarding Rape of Nanking and Unit 731. Even if those were proven to be true, A nuke is still a warcrime as those who perished in the damage wanted nothing to do with going to war and just wanted to live life normally. Even Eisenhower thought it was unnecessary.
