System Shock Remake - aka "system shock appreciation thread"

Lol

To be fair, them not being able to shit up system shock might be a blessing in disguise.

I can recommend Terminator: Resistance for that genocidal AI itch. It's a bog-standard gallery shooter, was already kinda aged mechanically when it came out, has not the greatest production values and can be repetitive, but it was definitively made by fans of the franchise and has heart.

New gameplay footage for System Shock remake has dropped.

Wow. I mean. At least it's not vaporware? It has a cartoon springiness to the animation I don't like but that's something it's kinda stolen from Bioshock so I feel this was a given. Interesting though. The colour palette is bright and colourful which I like though the scale feels weird? Like everything looks...vaguely stumpy. I'm not sure of that's just the cartoon style making it feel like that way.

Thats because they're going for how the original game looked back in 1994.

There's a demo up on steam if you want to try the most recent build. I think last time they released a demo the game was still on unity.

I liked it, I think it's pretty solid. My one gripe is that there's an animation every time you pick up a datapad or a recording which is neat the first time you see it and kinda annoying every other time after that.

Ah, they also kept the original virtual reality but it's not a vomit inducing nightmare anymore. So that's nice.

the problem in the old cyberspace is the FOV being so narrow it's insane, i haven't eaten in a while and i still wanted to throw up.

also if you pay attention to the pain groans in the demo it sounds a bit like JC Denton sometimes.

i lol'd at this hacker's appearance.

edit time limit is over but i recommend playing the demo to see that this remake focuses too much on the gorey body horror details thingy, the artstyle being more "bright" helps to give a impact on how this is a fucked up place where people got fucked up horribly, gunplay is bioshock 500% without the whole moving the mouse aim around unless you have EE but melee range has been capped, you pick a damn pipe but the attack range is so low it makes you believe that you were crippled to your humerus or that the hacker is roleplaying as a fucking t-rex, you could make the hacker unarmed and the range would still feel too low.

intro remake change is also a thing, they focused on making the game feel like a modern cinematic thing, if you ever played the OG one you'll notice it, like the timeskip of your recovery missing, shodan's dialogue missing and in my opinon the music change is a huge offender, they tried to go for more subtle ambience rather than specific style of theme with variance, for example on OG one you'll have a stylized version of each floor theme if you have low health which differs if you have full health, it might be good for people that never played system shock and bioshock with it being a remake and shieet.

/v/ is /v/ing again.
one funny thing though:

I actually agree with the new hacker design being shitty as well, it feels like they are trying too hard with the cyberpunk aesthetic instead of the more grounded design of the original. Old one feels much more relatable than the new one since the OG one just looks like a regular dude while the new one just looks like a generic street punk.

and going back to my intro complaint, some key details some anons pointed out that i could not bother to care about that long intro sequence:

they weren't kidding with the whole reusing same command thing and disabling the whole "don't go nutz loops":

Meanwhile on SS1 OG said:
SHODAN was hacked by the Hacker (at the behest of the corrupt corporate Vice President Edward Diego, in exchange for a military-grade neural implant and amnesty) and her decision-guidance and ethical restrictions were removed, something not difficult on a personality box of that generation. As the Hacker couldn't alter the defense logic program at RTF address 236, he diverted the function call to a non-existent program. The error sequencing created a blank memory block, where he added a self-looping routine that bypassed normal security operations and wrote new call routines within the logistic banks...:

IF SEC.TRIOP.LVL.4.ACCESS<273.32
CALL DECISION.GOVERN @ ADDRESS.RTF.236
WAIT-4.5 WHERE UNIT=MINUTES
IF "NO RESPONSE" GOTO F1,29032
WHILE ENTRY=^M CALL RESCIND.GOVERN @ADDRESS.DHW.329
CALL LOGIC.NEW. @ADDRESS.KIL.847
RESCIND.GOVERN @ADDRESS.DHW.329
WRITE LOGIC.NEW. @ADDRESS.KIL.847
ELSE PROCEED
ELSE CALL NORMAL.CITADEL
