People being shat on for being good at painting doesn't shock me in trench crusade. When the whole style is basecoat + sepia oil wash I imagine people genuinely seething at someone who understands how to layer paints properly.

Its pretty grim (no pun intended), but you're not wrong. There is a way to do that style of painting and create some spectacular pieces of work, but why do that when you can just zenithal prime, block a few colours in and slap streaking grime on it. Theres been a big problem in the hobby for the past decade or so where it has become a celebration of mediocrity, but Trench Crusade/Inq28 have taken it to another level.

As an aside, if anyone wants to play a decent spoopy WWI skirmish game without all of the baggage attached to it, check out a game called A War Transformed.

If memory serves me correctly Only Games are now part of MMF, so there is always an incentive for someone selling via MMF to use Only Games for their physical distribution, as opposed to selling commercial licenses to third parties.
it is, but I don't think they demand exclusivity, some creators still offer a merchant tier for their patreon. might have changed by now tho, going off memory and haven't looked into it myself.

MMF doesn't force Only Games on you, but I'd be shocked if they didn't offer them some sort of deal to use them.

Hitching their wagon to the Inq28/28 Mag has killed a lot of the enthusiasm in most of the people I've spoken to. I dipped my toe in the water with that a few years back and it is full of some of the most pretentious cunts I've ever encountered, even by tabletop gaming standards. Even if you ignore the politics (which they very firmly pin to their mast), they're just not good people. When you see people getting witch-hunted in Facebook groups for the heinous crime of actually being good at painting, you know shit is fucked. Its Traphouse with an oil wash.
I can't stress how much the 28 Mag and their faggotry killed my interest in it. I probably would have gone all in on the STLs and everything, maybe even printed a set or two for use at the FLGS... but there's a well known rule out there for dealing with this shit:

Do not give money to people who hate you.

These flag bearing tourists stress how much they hate chuds and the other types of lesser-status men that hang out at FLGS, but they NEED the chud credit card to keep the hobbies going. Yes, Trench Crusade had a great kickstarter. But it would have hit 5, maybe 10 million if not for 28mag, and it wouldn't be needing to use some of the 3.3 million they DID get to pay influencers to try and keep the hype going.

There was a huge kickstarter for a subfaction of the Kingdom of Antioch (poll wise, most popular faction since its easy to kitbash, as they are the regular humans of the setting without the fucked up zealotry of the Pilgrims) called the Red Brigade. It made gangbusters despite having fucked up tiers (iirc, you had to buy fucking arms and bodies separetly like its some kind of janky copyright infringing Cults3D listing) and the full army being pretty fucking expensive (i think it was 160 CAD for all the STLs, some of which were not usable in skirmish games or were heretic based)

I noped out of that Red Brigade business straight away. Westfalia Miniatures was the biggest red flag, then the price and finally 28Mag's involvement (yet again). Westfalia first appeared on my radar after the miniatures they made for Mork Borg. They're decent enough sculpts, but they can drown in a barrel of dicks at those prices. When you look at their past work, it's all based around what my friend calls "the Weird Twitter end of tabletop", ie anything that comes out of Exalted Funeral and that ilk. The kind of fart huffing niggers that describe their work as "boutique" and create "zines". Fucking zines... Touch rope.

That Red Brigade Kickstarter still managed to net a little over half a million. People are so desperate to get off the teat of GW that they will fork over the kind of money they had the balls to ask for. It wouldn't be so bad if there were any stand-out minis in the lineup. There wasn't anything in there that you couldn't kitbash physically or digitally. Half a million for game that nobody plays. Once the hype for the game dies down (as it is beginning to) those minis are going to be sitting alongside the Wii Fit or propping up the listings on eBay.

Its hard to believe that the closest thing to a central source Trench Crusade has is a Mega that is maintained by troons and a list builder that struggles to keep up with Discord. How do you manage to fuck things up that badly?

Its sad, because there are a lot of people involved in that scene that don't subscribe to the bollocks that 28 Mag preaches, nor do they wear programming socks. They are the biggest battered wives of the hobby by far (with the exception of 30K players who get ritually abused by GW). If they don't bow down and pledge fealty to the rainbow flag they know full well they'll get excommunicated.

Theres no exclusivity as far as I'm aware of, but MMF do push it heavily. A lot of the designers I support/used to support have it as an option and still hand out commercial licenses. If you're a creator you'd be stupid not to use it. From what I can gather there is very little work involved other than uploading your files. Only Games do all of the grunt work. If their output wasn't so bad I'd consider doing it myself.

I've got huge buyer's remorse about Trench Crusade in general now. The game itself is okay. Just okay. I expected a lot more given the talent involved. One of the biggest problems it faces is the distribution of the rules/lists. Sometimes you will see things released on Discord, sometimes you will see a link Pedosky, sometimes you will see a random link in a the thread on /tg/ (more on that later). There is no central distribution of any material associated with the game.

Its symptomatic of an over-arching problem with the game as a whole, in that it needs a competent project manager. Managing creative types is like herding fucking sheep at the best of times (and I'll grudgingly admit they have my sympathy for having to deal with 3D modelers; they're cancer) and with such a small crew handling something like this its evident that the whole thing is being done by committee. The whole thing seems to fire off in multiple directions without completing anything. Its especially galling when you take into account how much money they made. There is more than enough in the pot to take someone on in a temporary capacity to get this shit in order. I dread to think what a clusterfuck the physical book is going to turn out like.
My buyer's remorse hasn't kicked in yet, but we'll see what happens when my models arrive. I'm also frustrated by their inability to keep their shit together in a central location and their insistence on randomly dumping new lore and rules on one social media channel and then not advertising them anywhere else. I'm also feeling like the physical rulebook is quickly going to become a glorified shelf-filler if they keep insisting on adding new shit to the game after it's released, and it makes me wonder if they even thought that part through. And I really don't like how hard they're carrying water for Only Games. People have been getting models with visible print lines, gummy uncured areas, and damage from careless cleanup, and the TC guys are just kind of blowing off those complaints. I remember one guy on the Kickstarter who bought some other models from OG to see what he could expect and got some really shitty prints after like four months of waiting, and the TC team's response was to blame the STL creator for not scaling their models properly because "Only Games just prints what they're told to print." It left a sour taste in my mouth.

Only Games are complete shit, but you can expect to see a lot more companies like them cropping up over the next couple of years. None of the minis I bought from Only Games would pass muster. Like you say; layer lines, uncured areas, damage, they obviously use wash & cure stations because of the amount of shit on them and neither do they fully dry the minis before they're cured.

The minis I bought as a test were by a guy called Knucklebones. Someone I used to have a commercial license for before he moved over to Only Games. He's a very talented sculptor/modeler and his minis have a very Oldhammer feel to them. The only problem is that his models are very low-poly compared to most (especially his older sculpts). They're a good test to see if your settings are dialed in correctly when it comes to anti-aliasing. I purposefully picked a handful of his older sculpts that I was familiar with when I put in my Only Games order. The results were pretty much what I expected; they all looked like they were fresh out of Minecraft. Whoever is running this outfit knows the bare minimum when it comes to printing and their QA would make Forge World wince.

The physical models from the first Trench Crusade Kickstarter were just as abysmal. These were cast resin minis and just fucking awful. You expect a bit of cleanup work on cast resin, but there were mold slips on some of these which rendered them completely unusable. I remember seeing photos on the Kickstarter of them sorting the minis prior to mailing them out and it made me wonder if they cherry picked some of them to send out to influencers, because they sure as shit didn't look anything like what I received. There are guys in China working out of the back of a mobile phone repair store inhaling carcinogenic fumes like they're huffing whippets that make better minis on their lunch hour. Thankfully they made the STLs for these minis available for free on the KS later on so you could make them properly.

When you raise any concerns about anything Trench Crusade related you have an experience similar to the five stages of grief, but for the sake of brevity they've whittled it down to three. First you have the ignorance stage where your concerns aren't even acknowledged. Then you have the dismissal stage where you are gaslit into thinking there isn't a problem, which is usually accompanied with a bunch of photos from their more sycophantic followers with chants of "well mine are okay", "I have my files", "its not even out yet!" etc. Finally, if you are persistent enough, stink ditch Voltron will assemble and you will be met with open hostility. And these cunts have the audacity to call the 40K community "toxic".

Eventually. My point -- that tying themselves to the 28mag faggots harmed their success -- stands, although admittedly I don't know how much more it could have made. The excitement over this game was electric when it first went viral. Everyone, EVERYONE, wanted a new Mordheim. Everyone wanted Blanchitsu Grimdark that wasn't GW. What we're going to get, unless the "chud" community sweeps in and basically ignores the 28mag faggots to death, will not be enough to keep people interested. To wit: They're apparently already harassing painters who do anything but the most bare bones assclown paintjobs (prime it black, drybrush white, coat it in some washes, call it good) and the 28mag community's views on Christianity are worse than reddit's -- a problem when you're talking about a game that's heavily, heavily influenced by Christianity. "But what if the Church is the real evil" doesn't work when the other side are literally demons from hell.

Having seen the paint thing mentioned a couple times now does anyone have screen caps? Like I said earlier it doesn't shock me it's happening, I just want to relish the seething over what is effectively a glorified arts and crafts project.

I referenced it as something I witnessed in internet antiquity, ie about 4-5 years ago, in the 28Mag FB group and there have been similar spats in Inq28/Blanchitsu groups in general. It was a common thing for people with decent painting ability and/or who knew their stuff to have their wrists slapped when being too specific with criticism/advice. Every group has that one cunt that thinks nuance is a village in France who will barge in and proclaim how someone should be painting, but in all the instances I witnessed the people who were doing the criticizing were doing it in a calm and constructive manner. That wasn't enough for them to avoid getting ostracized though. I left everything associated with that scene and stuck to using Instagram if I wanted any inspiration. It just isn't worth interacting with these wankers on any level.

I am a bit annoyed how it’s going in that direction because the hobby side is my favorite part of it. Yes I like the games too but building and painting imo is the most fun part of it for me.

The best pilgirm paint schemes i saw was a guy doing it like 90s warhammer complete with a goblin green base, he actually used more than one color and didnt ruin it with le easy grimdark oil wash grime Classic.jpg

The accidental klan is a nice touch too

But its just so much nicer of a scheme
here is another
Classic2.jpg

Compared to le grimdark style, which just looks like it got dumped in a poop bucket more than le grime

Welcome to history, dipshit. Gibraltar controls the entrance to the Mediterranean, so of course it'd be a key point in this war, and Cordoba has been an important city since the time of the Roman Empire, so of course hell's forces would want to control it.

It's gonna be funny to watch these people turn on each other over this stuff.

Or, the devs will capitulate to keep their friends at 28fags happy and "fix" the setting, which will work the same way every "fixed" setting works to bring players in: It won't.
I have a gut feeling that if they actually ever try to fuck with the game more visibly, the first thing to go would be shit like the Nuns, those always get alot of bait and seethe even on Reddit

Since TC is still being brought up here, I might as well bring this up.

>They're this fucking mad about e-celebs shit talking their game
Lmao. I think we might need a troon crusade thread.
Crosspost from the 40K thread. Trench Crusade folks literally did a Powerpoint at Adepticon to bitch and moan about the chuds that they threw out of the Discord. GW has done some incredibly stupid shit over the years, but at least they've never gotten up in front of an audience at a major industry event to whine about their haters. At the rate this is going, I'm thinking @Red flaming panda is right and they're going to be thread-worthy very soon.
