Tabletop Roleplaying Games (D&D, Pathfinder, CoC, ETC.)

Huh. Okay. I know nothing about your game, but there things you could do about the whole situation that wouldn't result in character death. Have you made it clear to him how likely his character is to dying, or are you just gonna pull the rug from under him without warning?
I’ve let him know and hopefully he’ll change his mind since only a day had passed in-game. I tried convincing him it’s not like becoming a death knight and it’ll result in absolute character death.

EtA: I’m playing 5e D&D with these guys because they won’t pick up any other edition and the player in question is a min/maxer.

He said he wants to be able to reap the benefits of becoming a large aberration because he rolled a variant human tempest cleric with elemental adept and likened it to being like pikachu.
I'm guessing this is 5e, right? He does know that at higher levels he'll be calling down literal thunderstorms, right? Tempest Clerics are arguably one of the more powerful casters out there with access to both a nice spell list and martial weapons and heavy armor. Nothing quite like bashing skulls in with a warhammer and thunderous rebuking anyone who takes a swing at you.

That right there is a nifty little combo, since you can smite anyone who nails you for 16 damage right on the spot. Especially since Elemental Adept lets him bypass DR.

That’s why I’m just like why. It’s such a good build with point buy out the gate. I can’t see any benefits to turning into a retarded red frog man.

Yeah kill his character, turn it into a slaad, don't let him control it, and then record his screams. Not how it works at all given you become a new entity upon death via chaosphage, and it's coming off as munchkinning dickery with how he phrased it. That casual dismissal of a character makes my bones rattle and enter attack mode.

At least have them go out with some dignity if you hated the character. For example, we had a guy who "botched" throwing explosives when his character became unfun to play due to how encounters went. It was an all or nothing build, and the stuff we fought made those results nothing very often. He died in the fight and we paid respects. Similar thing happened to another character in a different game due to similar issues.

He doesn't get that the slaad is NOT his character. It's a new entity formed from his processed and recycled soul. Much like how an ilithid is NOT the corpse the parasite latched onto. Don't bitch out and give him that slaad, force him to sit there and make a new sheet since he decided to retardedly kill his character with the assumption you'd let him control the purely chaotic evil demon.

If he doesn’t decide to seek out a way to rid himself of the chaos phage then that’s the best option. I’ve contacted the player to make sure this is what he wants for next session. I’m going to go ahead and set up for an encounter with him after he transforms just to be sure so that there’s at least a battle. Slaadi in general have poor roleplaying appeal enough as it is, so the battle should be entertaining enough for the other players. I think after that I’ll hand him a blank sheet and if he decides not to roll up a new character it’ll be business as usual moving forward.

It's a very strange position to be in, and is frankly unfair to you if he's not making himself clear. I've had people switch characters for no reason, which derailed whole arcs I had for one of my games, so I can sympathize, here. Is he a steady player? The poeople who switched characters in my game had almost zero interest in roleplay, it turned out. They either weren't satisfied with whatever badass factor they had in their heads, or chased the latest OP build that reddit recommended to them.

Yeah, I'm with the others on this. WTF. Why? You're not even turning into something cool, like a werewolf or vampire. You're a fucking transplanar frog critter.

Hell, if I wanted to play something like that, I'd roll up a neraphim. They look like slaad from a distance, but are actually fairly chill in comparison, and hunt chaos beasts in Limbo for food and materials.

This guy’s one of those types who likes to get onto r/dnd and see what the metagame is. I haven’t heard back from him yet, but it’s not only stupid that he wants to do this, it’s also this combination of derailing the campaign and putting me in a spot as a DM where I’m like “fuck, dude, really?”. I’ve had players in the past try to make the campaign all about them or try to make everyone else’s story archs become about them and it’s easy to deal with those, but this guy’s just ugh.

I’d be more than willing to translate it to 5e since that’s a race that’s actually got some potential for roleplay as opposed to the slaadi and would fit in with a campaign involving fiends.

If he's being ana wkward asshole about this deliberately, then he definitely need to be put down, now. This guys sounds like he's testing to see what BS he can get away with. This could be one of those tip of the iceberg, things.

I’m still waiting for a response from him, but assuming he wants to go through with it and has to roll another character I’m going to limit him to just the basic PHB. That’s if he even wants to keep playing. I want to try to keep this from going off the rails because I don’t want to take away from the other players who are spending a Sunday evening playing with me. I’ve been in playgroups where there’s players who like to try to push the limits of the DM’s permissions and it always spirals out of control.

>7 year old niece staying over for the afternoon
>Need to find something family friendly to have on TV in living room
>Find an old Ultraman collection DVD, put it on for background while I watch her and she helps me with some housework.
>She's...into it. Really into it.
>Get idea; dig out old Monsterpocalypse figures, tell her about them
>Little girl's eyes light up, especially since Shadow Sun Syndicate is basically the Ultraman faction
>Wants me to show her how to play with them next time she comes up.
>Corruption towards gaming Stage 1 complete....

Good luck, dude! If he spergs out, be sure to write down everything he says so we can all laugh at him, later!

So apparently, D&D Beyond is going to de-list Volo's Guide and Tome of Foes in favor of their new 'Monsters of the Multiverse' book. People won't be able to buy the older books via the service, and they'll only be available to access for people who've already purchased them. Article notes that it means no longer having a whole bunch of monster lore that was in those marginally older books, since the new one will feature 'updated character races and monster statblocks' (and assumedly cut out a whole bunch of shit).
I'm assuming that this is them memoryholing all the creature/racial lore that they want retconned out?

They’re that desperate to ruin a perfectly good system, aren’t they?

Yeah, that does not surprise me in the slightest.

Keep sharing and seeding those .PDFs, boys.

Or at the very least they're pushing gray blob races  hard. Went and checked on Monsters and yeah, at the very least it's the one that completely wiped all numeric racial traits in favor of 'pick your +1s', made languages a free for all, and fiddled with a bunch of racial abilities.

Idk about the creature lore stuff but I'm assuming it's also the one which is very pattypaws about monsters being, y'know, evil.

As I said awhile back, this is the point where these turds officially became worse than the Satanic Panic....

I plan on making a Fallout campaign on the Savage Worlds system. Set on Mexico City and elements of Underrail because thats what i've been playing and some of that stuff sounds cool. This would be my first time being a dm after some shitfuckery with some friends codming some massive campaing that fell off.
Its there some advice you could give about dming, fallout or savage worlds?
I've been running a Fallout game set in Detroit and it's been working out pretty well. The rules are easy to learn and it's good for games where you'll be expecting a lot of action. The core rulebook will cover about 90% of everything you need to make a Fallout game, but you'll have to homebrew the rest or get it off somebody else's homebrew. If you want, I can post my homebrew stats so you can get an idea of what you need to do or just use it for yourself.

For Fallout, you need to figure out what kind of enemies your players are going to encounter. The main point of Fallout is that humanity remains the same no matter what may happen to it and there will always be war despite this. So the question is who is going to be in Mexico City and what are they fighting over? It's mentioned in New Vegas that Mexico City wasn't hit too hard in the war. So maybe there's enough industry left intact that would give who ever controls it a clear advantage over their rivals. Your players could be mercenaries fighting for those fighting over Mexico City, or scavengers trying to get whatever they can get hands on while avoiding the major factions. For the who, I can't really answer because I'm not the most familiar with Mexico. The Cartels, the remnants of the Government, and the Catholic Church are the only ones I could think of for Mexico, so you should do some research. Be sure to have some smaller factions and groups as well. New Vegas did this really well, so replay it or read the wiki if you want a good idea Flesh them out, figure out how they would adapt to the post-apocalyptic environment, and give them some quirks and a reason to side with any of them. It also helps if you read some post-apocalyptic stories to get some inspiration. Fallout had a lot of influences so you might as well get some ideas from them. I recommend A Canticle for Leibowitz as a start.

As for DMing, I can give some general advice. Avoid sandbox games for your first time. Player agency may sound good, but more often than not they'll just wander aimlessly and get bored without a clear goal and obstacles. It can be as simple as getting rich or just killing a specific type of enemy (faction members, death claw hunters, etc.). Sandbox games are also more work than linear games so try keeping the plot simple. Be sure to be well read on the rules so you don't have to halt the game to look something up every couple minutes. For notes, I like to type up an outline of what's going to happen without getting too detailed. Your players might always find a way to accomplish something you didn't anticipate so you need to be prepared to improvise.

Hope this helps out, and maybe someone more experienced can help out as well.
