Team Fortress: Source 2, a fan project seeking to port Valve's classic shooter to the Source 2 engine, is officially dead. The news was announced following a DMCA takedown demand from Valve that blocked the group's GitHub repositories. It joins Portal 64, which was also canceled less than a week after the release of its "First Slice."

The takedown was the "nail in the coffin" for the project, the announcement read, which had already have been on shaky ground before Valve stepped in.

TEAM FORTRESS: SOURCE 2 HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN.
"While we were discussing the project's future internally recently, we already came to the conclusion to stop the development of the project due to the current state of the code being unusable anymore with s&box's recent major engine changes, and that we overall moved on from it," the announcement read.

"Sadly, this means this DMCA takedown is the nail in the coffin. We cannot bring it back and we've hit Valve's attention, it seems like they definitely don't want us to use their IP (which is totally fair and legal from them). From the bottom of our hearts at Amper, it's been an honour to grow this project with all of you and the incredible team behind, we cannot be thankful enough for all your support and enthusiasms over the last 3 years. We're so happy we got this far."

PORTAL 64 REIMAGINED VALVE'S CLASSIC PUZZLE GAME ON NINTENDO 64 HARDWARE.
In development since at least 2021, Team Fortress: Source 2 was envisioned as a new version of the classic game on Garry's Mod spiritual successor s&box. With Team Fortress 2 now 17 years old and largely overrun by bots, Team Fortress: Source 2 was intended to inject fresh life into Valve's beloved shooter. The team at one point had more than 20 volunteers helping to port assets from the base game and rebuild Team Fortress 2 mechanics.

Portal 64, meanwhile is being shuttered due to the project "depending on Nintendo's proprietary libraries," according to an update on the project's Patreon. Like Team Fortress, Portal 64 sought to revive Valve's 2007 classic, but on Nintendo 64 hardware. Its developer celebrated the release of its "First Slice" demonstrating its progress on January 5.

IGN has reached out to Valve for comment.

They announced this change via Twitter/Discord. The DMCA on Github is here. Twitter post, is here. (I used another source for Discord screenshot)

However, I hope they hire the devs or just give something substantial to them, because this looks bad.
Valve has at least some history of hiring those who got punished by them - see Drunken F00l who ate a VAC ban for exploiting the crafting system to get Golden Wrenches and is now an employee.

all i know is Taylor and his gang of modders are a bunch of faggots and seeing their project get shut down gave me a chuckle.

Its absolutely unreal that the gay guy banging the tranny is somehow the smallest faggot in this entire conversation.

It is also hillarious watching the guy freaking out over the tranny word being used making everyone cringe and nobody actually siding with him though leaving him to humiliatingly hang in shame.

You have to run fan projects like you're in The Scene. Don't make yourself identifiable, dodge the lawyers and make the source/assets widely available so that it can't get shut down. Or you could let your hard work go to waste the nanosecond Nintendon't sniffs you out.
I don't know why they don't. I don't know why they give up so fast, like, they're going to code a whole ass game but give up at reeeee no github?

And if Nintendon't does sniff them out and serve a C&D (let's say the coder used his IRL credentials to gather support), why not say you retired and hide better? The code was public and someone else got it.

Maybe they want the patreon money:

or got bored and were liiking for an excuse to quit without "betraying the community".

I wouldn't know, I have the LGBT tag in my blocklist.
I don't. I wish I could get rid of porn without losing on "violence". I get a lot of weebshit porn just because I have Yuppie Psycho (Spanish) and Ace Attorney. And even if I block the gaymes, I still get items from them offered in the points shop. WHY? NIGGER WHY?

I have "some nudity or sexual content" on Allowed for games (otherwise games like Prison Architect and Crusader Kings would get filitered out) and blocked for community content and the filth still leaks through.
For example, right now in the points shop, I see these items:
- elder ring ranni steam startup movie [some shitty loli]
- border of heaven avatar frame
- hades steam startup movie
- fox girl animated avatar [LOLI FURRY]
- cheerful cow animated avatar [A FUCKING CARTOON COW SWINGING ITS UDDER]
- winterbunny2023 emoticon

All in all I get about 8 porn items from 5 furry cp games (THAT I DON'T OWN AND HAVE NEVER LOOKED AT). I click on "items from games you play" and sure enough, about half of the games in the list are actually in my library, the other half is 50% trash and 50% troon cum.

Another reason I don't really want to block faggotry is safe-seeming developers and publishers make it, and I'd rather be forewarned and avoid buying decent-seeming games from companies which also disseminate faggotry. Even if I do block, it will make little impact w.r.t. the amount of faggotry I see on Steam.

and Valve also nearly got into legal trouble with Nintendo over the emulators being available on Steam.
So it's fair to say anything involving Nintendo on Valve's platform is just a non-starter at this point. Which, from how draconian Nintendo is, I can't blame them one bit for saying no, you can't use our IP for this fucking Nintendo shit cause you idiots nearly got us in legal trouble before.

I think there's more going on here. Valve didn't shut down Black Mesa, and that's being sold on steam, not made by Valve at all. This is literally the only project I am aware of that has been shut down by Valve.
Perhaps Valve has plans for it.
FYI Valve is very protective of the name "Source." Black Mesa was originally titled "Black Mesa: Source" and Valve told them drop the name Source to avoid confusion that this was a game by them.

Maybe they want the patreon money:
yeah there's a shitload of "fan" projects that make sure they have a way to get paid before they make sure they complete the project they're a "fan" of working on

Their work on Proton is good, finally shipping a Linux gaming product after the failure of Steam Machines is nice. I guess people are mad about the Windows 7/8 decision. What else have they done that is so terrible?
I admit they're not as bad as other corporations but they've been slowly inching their way towards being another typical shitty corpo

Off the top of my mind:
By their own admission using TF2 as a guinea pig to test microtransactions for their other games
Helped spearhead the lootbox / crates / cases / MTX shit into existence back in 2010
Abandoning development of TF2 multiple times
The pay to win shit show that was Artifact
Doing little to nothing about cheaters in TF2 because none of the devs want to deal with the cat and mouse development treadmill. CS2 looks like it's getting the same problem as well
Releasing the only Half Life game we've gotten in years as a VR exclusive
Paid mods
Allowing shovelware games in the steam store some of which turned out to be crypto miners

May seem like small beans stuff but they used to be the poster boys of a good company now they're slowly going the route of Blizzard. Give it another 10 years and this list will double or triple in size, its death by a thousand cuts.

If the TFS2 fags have a Patreon then it might go against the Valve TOS.

They used to run creatorstf which they got in trouble on the TF2 wiki for inserting a patreon link into the article for creatorstf. That led the wiki staff to outright delete the article on creatorstf

In all likelihood they had a patreon and were making money off tf2s2. People don't change. These clowns at "AmpereSoft" (love that Valve couldn't be fucking arsed to spell their name correctly) know what they're doing is wrong, they don't care.

I doubt they're going to clamp down on stuff like Steam Deck mods any time soon but their stance on source 2 being effectively a black box only for internal use puzzles me and I don't see a real reason for them to do it other than either middle management faggotry that did not exist before or licensing drama so you could be right.
I want to hope that is the case as well, but I also think Valve is clamping down on the use of Source 2 outside their own hands for some reason.

I THINK Valve is still very protective of Source 2 given how new it still is. They kind of were a bit protective with Source 1 when it just came out, like with Vampire The Masquerade. Maybe that might change with time but we also gotta accept the staff running Valve has long since changed from the early days, there just arent that many veterans left within it.

So who fucking knows
Not cool, Gabe. I thought you were a libertarian. What's next, trans rights?

If you watched their recent Half Life documentary....yeah.
Yeah I'm pretty sure Valve has their own TF2 Source 2 thing going. They already started with DOTA 2, and now CS2. Smart money is that they'd eventually move all extant games onto it as well, and that includes TF2.

My heart wishes you'd be right

My brain knows you arent tho

Valve has been infamously neglecting TF2 for practically a decade at this point. They only were forced to recently put their foot down because fans were literally starting to contact VAs to use their connections to get SOMEONE from Valve to actually respond. But I doubt that will last.

This is disappointing and I hope the project moves behind the scenes. Sad because I've been a Half-Life nerd my entire life, own nearly every Valve game and have had a Steam account since the platform existed with that diarrhea colored GUI (RIP WON). Hell I've even emailed Robin Walker a few times and had some decent back and forth when I got into mapping - he is a nice guy.

Edit: the full res img from their dicksore finally loaded, mannnnnnnn this is fucking lame.

Portal 64 sounds like a complete tard excursion but bringing TF2 onto a newer engine would be an interesting prospect if that whole community wasn't overrun with troons and people who overpay for cosmetics.
All I could think when it got shut down was "Good". The N64 is dogshit hardware that's overrated to the heavens and back and porting anything to it in this day and age is fucking retarded. Let's not even touch on how litigious Nintendo is and the fact this dumbasses project was dead in the fucking water the second he announced it publicly.

Play the PC version like a fucking sane person or make an original game instead. Porting this shit instead of making something of your own is almost as bad as Chris calling Sonichu a fucking "original character" and meaning it unironically.

Sorry for a slight necro, I can't say this on the dumbasses YouTube channel itself without YouTube sending it to the shadow realm. It's such a pointless fucking waste of time and talent that I needed to vent it somewhere. I'm so fucking tired of these gay ass "retro vanity projects".
