to be fair, if I made a fraction of what Linus makes i'd be an arrogant prick.I've tried watching his videos, but there's something about him that I just can't stand. I don't know how to explain it, he just seems smug.

I legit don't understand why Kiwis hate Linus so much.
Anyway, my recommendation is Computerphile where they just go over the history of programming and software.
Link to the vid?well for me it because he made a video duringthe BLM riots saying if we bred white people. out

The shilling is one thing. It's the gurning in his thumbnails that makes Linus so punchable. That, and his content panders to retarded boomers and equally retarded zoomers (but I guess that's why the YT algorithm is so in love with him... that, and the aforementioned thumbnails). My dislike isn't towards Linus himself. Even if his shilling is in your face and the thumbnails are cringe. I just can't stand his entourage.
It's funny hearing an Australian accent coming out of MVG, but I concur... his videos are quality and he does some really neat stuff. Perifractic is another YTer in a similar category (weird voice, sometimes a bit cringe with his humour but he really knows his stuff and has made some cool things). He also shows himself porting things and explains the process of porting something to a console with a voice over in a 15 minute video. He's also employed by NightDive Studios if I remember things correctly.
I initially dismissed him because of his looks and voice, there are many stupid clickbaity youtube channels with idiots talking about things they don't understand. I was completely wrong.
He's pretty decent but I know the humor can be a deal breaker, it's very cheesy, like the extreme-dad version of NostalgiaNerd. He makes and 3D prints some stuff and puts out the files for them, did a video on how to get actual floppies working on the C64 mini(a useless thing but pretty neat), among other things.Perifractic is another YTer in a similar category (weird voice, sometimes a bit cringe with his humour but he really knows his stuff and has made some cool things).
I genuinely thought that was his voice before I heard him speak normally, I wish he didn't have to do that because he sounds like a manic cartoon character that's been kicked in the balls. It's because Linus follows the same formulaic, hyperactive zoomer process you get from random clickbait and "pet project" channels where the host(s) seem overexcited.
VWestlife - makes good vids on old pc stuff and audio equipment.
Adrian's Digital Basement - repairs old pc stuff
ETA PRIME - reviews new hardware (sbc, tablets, pcs, laptops) with a focus on gaming and retro gaming
I like Linus. He knows his stuff. But he's a corporate man at the end of the day.
The focus on growing and maximizing the amount of clicks really drags things down. Other channels depends on viewers and clicks but they seem to have an attitude that's more "let's do good work and people will come". One channel I watch from time to time explained that the "smash like and subscribe" meme actually works and in a couple of upcoming videos he would end with that and show the results. The statistics showed that it works, he got a sharp uptick in subscribers compared to every other months but he won't do it again because he doesn't like it and it felt like a cheap way to grow.I like Linus. He did a decent video breaking down why he has moved to that model. The TL;DW is that this is his business, and this is sadly what works on Youtube now.The focus on growing and maximizing the amount of clicks really drags things down. The problem with LTT is that they seem to employ EVERY annoying way to grow, SEO this and that, the thumbnails, pushing branding, clickbaity video titles, the shilling etc. Strip all of that away and it would be a good channel. I sometimes check out the Wan Show(their podcast) if there's specific topic I want to hear about. It's LTT with 80% less of the annoying stuff, there's a less frantic tone, and it can be pretty decent.

StopDropRetro - broke the bank with his Kickstarter/IndieGoGo scam campaigns but it's long inactive. Needless to say it's still fun to watch.Does anyone know of a decent channel about scam/misleading tech? Computer Clan does some stuff about it but is mostly mac focused and has an unfortunate face that i feel takes away focus from the video topic.
