Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

I had a 1989 computer that had A/V out. It was pretty fun playing Maniac Mansion on the tube. (I got it in like 1997.)

It was definitely possible and before the Xbox I and a lot of people I knew used the video out on certain TNT/Radeon/GeForce cards for tv shows/movies on TV. DivX and faster internet took piracy from bootleg VHS tapes to digital and good quality at a reasonable size.
It was still a pain in the ass to figure out why the TV screen was black this time but not the last one despite nothing changing, was there something wrong with the resolution or update frequency, was it the drivers, did Windows 98 do something fucky again, maybe if I restart... no. Maybe if I reset all settings... no, ok reinstall drivers and... No.

Fuck i-oh now it works.
It could be inscrutable to deal with at times. Some time later Matrox really nailed it with their dual screen support, treating two completely different screens as one through different outputs might have been the issue with tv-out but I don't know.

The Radeon AIW, that also had video input(and maybe a tv-tuner?), had a bad habit of crashing(blue screening) and behaving weird for no reason. It was by far the best thing around on a consumer level but it was still ass and the most vicious "ATI(AMD) have the worst drivers" screeching seemed to come from angry AIW owners. In my memory at least.

I really miss the Internet pre-web at all.

The Web and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.
Oh shut up you melodramatic bitch. How has the internet been a "disaster" for the human race? People have always been the way they are, it's just with the rise of social media and other shit that you can now read people's thoughts and think "wow that person is a fucking moron." But the internet has allowed researchers to publish their work online, allowed doctors to virtually talk to patients, allowed us to talk on this forum, allowed people to order their groceries and medication, allowed news to travel instantly, allowed cryptocurrencies to exist, and so on. Oh wow, someone on twitter is mad because I said nigger, I guess my twitter, facefuck and instashit accounts that don't exist are now going to get banned. Here's an idea, for all of you who agreed to AnOminous, suck my dick. Maybe then you'll stop obsessing over what tranny said what over social media and be able to live a normal life. The internet doesn't hold you down and refuses to let you go outside. You do realize you can still take walks, read books, and do everything you could do before the internet existed, right?

I'm strongly againist companies like google, facebook, microsoft, etc. harvesting personal information and taking advantage of users, so I cut them out of my life. I use Tor for almost all of my daily web browsing, removed as much proprietary software on my computers as possible, and I don't carry a cell phone with me when I leave the house unless absolutely necessary. And guess what, I'm pretty happy as a person. The internet is a tool, and a good one at that.

I miss the days of computer games coming in a box with a manual and a flier advertising the publisher's other games. Maxis and Sierra Online ones were both especially good.
Some games are just plain weaker without physical manuals. Take Ultima IV for example, the original release had a cloth map, a spellbook, a history book, and a huge fucking manual that detailed stuff like the controls and mechanics because there's no way of learning that stuff in-game.

The digital release has all that stuff to download, but it's not as fun switching between windows to open up the manual because you forgot how to open treasure chests or find the spell to remove poison than it is having the stuff in your hands, leafing through it, making you feel like an adventurer pouring through notes and shit.

Why even make games in 3D if the camera is always stuck in one view? Seems like a waste to make 3D models and texture maps for something that could be done with 2D graphics just as well.

3D is cheaper and more versatile.

With KOF11 SNK took the series to HD and redrew everything and the result looked like this:
kofterry.gif

It's really, really good but there's a cost to it
In an interview with Fighters Front Line, Kukino replies that each character took 16~17 months to complete with a team of 10 different designers. Additionally, the sprites were personally checked by Nona for quality. Due to the time demands of drawing such detailed frames of animation, as well as the decision not to incorporate older assets as previous games in the series have, there are only 20 playable characters, the lowest number ever in a game from this series.

To achieve that result they created animated 3d models for each character and basically rotoscoped them, then they chucked the models into the trash. It's 2d but they can't get away from the 3D.

SNK published a short step-by-step guide on their process.

I miss being able to buy them in store.

Retailers like CompUSA, Egghead Software, Babbages, Walden Software, Electronics Boutique(not Modern EB), Suncoast, Sam Goody, and many others have all gone away.

I remember finding a black label copy of Disgaea 1 at FYE. Now everything has been replaced by Clothing stores and eateries. I basically have zero reason to leave the house outside of work. Malls and other large stores are shit now with nothing interesting.

I didn't say the Internet you dumb fuck.

Internet = Internet Protocol and anything that can operate with it.

Web = HTTP, HTML, URLS, and basically the whole web browser system.

The Bulliten Board System used Internet Protocol, but was not the “World Wide Web”.

No shit. Just because the web operates over the Internet does not mean the Internet is the web.
