Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

This is why you put down the $100 for a made in Kentucky Unicomp New Model M
Ehhhh,
Stay away from the "new Model M", I have one, and comparing it from the Classic (my model is from 95 IIRC), and the 87 IBM model M I have, the "new model M" isn't that great. Its a good keyboard but some of it is lacking, even more so for around the sdme price/cheaper you can luck your away in to a IBM Mobel M or a used Unicomp Classic (maybe even new Classic)

The New Model M doesn't use the same keys and the keys rotate a bit.

Back in the day I had an IBM three-button optical USB mouse. That was the cat's meow.
I miss the big Logitech trackball mice. Those were top notch for sniping in Quake Team Fortress. If you were fighting scrubs you could even spawn camp and shoot them one after another as they were coming out of the respawn while they screamed and cried and called you a bot.

A friend had this piece of shit, the Logitech Cyberman, sold as the new way to play 3D games.

He actually found great use for it while working in AutoCAD though.

I fucking hate infotainment touch screens in cars. There is never anything for them to actually display, they replace a lot of physical controls that I don't have to take my eyes off to use, and they are usually laggy as fuck. Yes I'm mad, but the only reason they're in every car is because backup cameras were mandated

Can throw TVs into that mix as well.

Little effort in the design combined with shit hardware to power them.

I have a love/hate with mine
I like mine because of the backup cam (but maybe if they actually gave a shit about the driver being able to see things it wouldn't be needed)
Easy to change the time when required
I know what stations my radio favorites are programmed to with out playing guessing games
That said my car still mostly have physical tactile controls for the radio/volume, and other commonly used/needed functions

Mine is pretty basic no android/apple car shit no "apps" outside of radio/settings/time and compass, and it is pretty responsive.

I hate it because I know most companies are moving everything to a the touchscreen meaning that you dont get any real feedback or know where your hand is when driving with out taking your eyes off the road.

They also invariably use the shittiest touchscreens it is possible to buy. Even parked, it is sometimes maddening to try to find out where the "hitbox" on a button is. Despite having huge icons, only an itty bitty tiny little part of it is actually the real button. Honestly fuck this trash and when someone crashes thanks to this bullshit, which is even worse than fiddling with a cell phone while driving, these assholes should get sued. There's no excuse for this crap.

At least the original nintendo D's let you calibrate the screen. I've seen Chinamen $40 aftermarket car touchscreens with better responsiveness

DS also didn't lag by a half a second or so when you touched the screen. The tech in a $200 20-year-old handheld is literally better than the tech in my $50,000 F-150.
The DS is the shit. Somehow, with its megear specks if you dig into it's technical aspects, my battered DS lite has wonderful touch sensitivity, plays games no problem, and let's not get started on that battery life- left that fucker on many a time as a kid in the car overnight, still had power in the morning.

My vehicle has a physical knob for radio volume, but it's not a real knob attached to a potentiometer, instead it's really like +/- keys on a keyboard. There's no relationship between the position of the knob and loudness. It spins forever in either direction. Also, if you had the radio cranked when the vehicle was last used, the radio starts up loud, but you can't turn it down until the car is finished booting. 0/10 would not recommend.

A lot of aftermarket head units use the same kind of volume knob design, but unlike modern radios where it's basically integrated as part of a larger infotainment OS, there's no lag waiting for stuff to boot. It also saves volume history. I hate the OEM radio implementations.

I enjoy that my OEM head unit has bluetooth... with a multi-second delay. Which is great for driving instructions from my phone... Turn left at the next intersection... you mean this one? that I'm already turning at? Thanks for that.

I mean the delay you experince when you turn the car's systems on from the off state. Either in acc mode or fully on, a lot of modern cars will boot up their infotaintment screen but the volume control won't register until a few good moments later. I had this issue in Hondas mostly where the head units were running some old android version.
