Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

One old name I am grateful to see return is Microprose. Boat Crew is old school simple gameplay that has taken my nostalgia meter all the way back to @ 1990. I haven't played B-17 The Mighty 8th Redux Dev yet but I probably will. (If you buy Boat Crew in base battles remain close to the replenishment tender (green ring) and spam acoustic torpedoes.)

I live in the UK and can still get a pack of 6 incandenscent bulbs for about £5. Why are they so expensive where you live? Have they all been replaced by shitty LED lights because "muh enviroment". Because apparently a piece of wire glowing is causing a major impact on the world.
Pretty much every LED light I've had has always mysteriously burned out. Maybe it's because of my house's dubious wiring but I've never had this issue with incandescent bulbs.
I think canuckistan banned incandescents a while back and yeah it was muh environment, not because the bulb itself for like the tungsten value or broken glass factor but because incandescent light as a notion is just "too inefficient." That waste heat is electricity that could be better put towards... the electric heat pumps they recommend instead of fossil fuel central heating, which also turn electricity into heat. Don't ask me how it's better.

LED bulbs in standard bayonet or screw type mounts don't vent their heat through the bulb, it all pools up in the base and cooks the power circuitry.

Presumably because in the US you can't buy standard incandescent bulbs any more.

The problem with LED bulbs is that there's a lot of places you can shave off some pennies which will result in a shortened life. In doubt I'd recommend fixtures with the LEDs built in and designed around them. Also buy cheap, buy twice defintively applies here. I never had problems with them. The power consumption is great, modern ones have warm pleasant light and they also last *a lot* longer than bulbs I used to have. Can't really recall ever replacing LED because it broke, really.

Not sure if it's the 100s of anti-adblock measures or backend is just shit, but, even navigating the website is ass. It takes 3 seconds to load the frontend, stuff constantly freezes and features half-work. Like, clicking the shorts button breaks the site and you have to reload it; the search and subscribers just refuse to load at that point. Clicking a video will buffer for 10 seconds, THEN start at a super-slow pace, and you can tell this is a back-end/hampering measure because ads load smoothly without any buffering. Watching playlists is impossible now. Wait 1 min for song to load, plays 5 seconds, buffers, etc.
There's also the fact that they really push the Shorts on desktop, only for it to be slow. And if you want to leave a comment, you have to shrink the page size to about 80% so you can actually click the send button.

Canada has not banned incandescent bulbs. They are at Dollarama.
Yeah looked it up and it turns out it was only 75-100W bulbs and it was all the way back in 2014 lol
but again it wasn't "muh environment" for anything about the bulbs materially, just the efficiency concern

that's probably why all my LED bulbs have died, all of my light mounts are bayonet-style mounts.

And it couldn’t be, considering the amount of tungsten used is minuscule and the rest of the bulb is infinitely recyclable metal and glass.

You know, as opposed to plastics and PCBs. Or plastics and mercury vapor. But muh efficiency!

I just want a laptop that can play CDs and DVDs.

No, I don't want to buy a separate fucking thing and plug it in with a fucking USB cable that will inevitably fucking break after a month or so.

I want that shit integrated into the fucking laptop, like they used to be. Like they  should be.

what you dont like being prevented from using your physical media convenientyl anymore. THE FUTURE IS DIGITAL ANYWAY GRANDPA EMBRACE IT

Been sifting through this thread for months now and I'm sure someone else has already said it inside of 223 pages, but holy fucking shit I hate .webp. Oh you thought that image you downloaded was a .PNG that you could use for texture work? Nope, .webp. Even more general purpose image software refuses to open it or utilize it, like Gimp or XnView, and most importantly: I don't fucking want .webp. I know there are several workarounds [I'm already using them successfully] but every now and then I'll get 2008 brain when every image on the internet was a file format that could actually be fucking used and forget and instantly right click and save as and later find I've saved a bunch of .webp bullshit. Why was I not surprised to find that it was another retarded concoction from Google?

Oh, also, "transparent PNGs" that are not transparent really give me a red ass too. And the fact that basically no search engine provides any good results anymore thanks to a combination of SEO and AI-generated gobbledy-gook.

I have different problems: My software almost universally supports WebP and even AVIF and other weird formats. However, when I open one in a new tab, my browser wants to download it to a temp file before being able to view it for some retarded reason. Otherwise, I'd view it just like JPG and PNG.

Edit: I opened a WebP on another site than KF, seems like a Xenforo problem. Usually I don't open them in new tabs, but XF is one of the few things I use that can't comprehend WebP and it fucks up, so I have to. I hate shitty software that fucks up more than I hate WebP.

Edit^2: Technology is just gay ok but at least MY gimp install supports webp

1. I totally agree. 2. I have always kept at least one USB optical drive for years now and they are much faster and 100 times better than whatever you find inside your laptop. Having said that, I buy a laptop to have PORTABLE computer. That means video/mouse/keyboard/network/Optical/multiple-USBS+input/output.

Instead I see so many pieces of shit with annoying chiclet keyboards that are missing/shrinking keys that non-consoomers still use (Function keys are "turned off" by default in most laptop BIOS), touchpad mouse that sucks at best, no optical drive and a couple of USB ports at best. I shouldn't have to bring a keyboard, mouse, USB hub (so I can use keyboard+mouse and still have USB), speakers, Optical drive, etc. with me if I travel. Throw in a monitor and I may as well bring a desktop.

You and me too, fren. Talk about a format that nobody needed and nobody asked for.

Sounds like your install of GIMP is an actual gimp because it has always opened them fine for me. I have a bit of OCD where any image I do save in webp I convert to PNG or JPG with GIMP and throw away. Like I said nobody asked for it.

And the fact that basically no search engine provides any good results anymore thanks to a combination of SEO and AI-generated gobbledy-gook.
Most "good" results are still around but buried under a mountain of SEO crap like you mentioned. It grinds my gears more that you can't just view/save the actual images freely anymore.

My gimp and your gimp were sitting by the fire. My gimp told your gimp "I'm gonna light your webp on fire". :P

Thread tax: I came here initally to bitch about something but I forgot. lol

It really sucks when the URL disguises a WEBP.

Also, GIMP can open WEBP, there's browser plugins to block WEBP, and online converters to convert WEBP. But there should not be WEBP in the first place. Maybe there's WEBP because copyright fanatics don't want people copying "stealing" pics, so that WEBP BS spread?

No, Google said "We need JPEG but better" and they made JPEG but about the same by repurposing parts of VP8. Then retardation happened.

Yeah, I agree that LPs being uncompressed audio are usually better than anything up until recent CDs that did lossless audio, but there is this culty mentality of old = better that is just fantasy.

I've seen some spergs trying to defend cassettes as having better audio than modern MP3s - the only benefit to cassettes was how indestructible they were, rolling around on the floor of your car for 6 months they'd still play just as fine when you found them again unless they somehow got magnetized.
Where tf did you buy your CDs?
Were you buying them from the gypsy who had burned MP3 files on one? CDs have been lossless since they were introduced.

Cassettes really CAN sound better than MP3s in some situations, provided that the recording and playback equipment is of decent quality alongside the cassette tape itself. I dunno why tf people still use MP3 when there are codecs like AAC, HE-AAC, xHE-AAC, Vorbis and Opus. xHE-AAC delivers great results with as little as 40 kbps. MP3 sounds like dogshit at those bitrates!

Note: this is encoded with Opus because JewTube, but Opus is very efficient, so it's a very good representation of xHE-AAC quality.

About LPs, they only sound like that because of the audio preprocessing kinda similar to FM radio processing. If you record the audio output digitally and burn it as redbook CD audio, it will sound the same and will play on your PS1 as well.

I miss cartridges for games, it was satisfying to schlop one into my Gameboy advanced SP. I loved that thing. It was simple perfection with no touch screen bullshit and backwards compatibility. Most of the Gameboy and Gameboy color games I played were with the SP cause it's backlight made them some much more pleasant to play.

I honestly do not give a fuck about fidelity at low bitrates. I care about fidelity at "high but not too high" bitrates. If you can name a format that is quality-equivalent to 320 kbps cbr mp3 and just as compatible with all the different software and hardware I use my 320 kbps cbr mp3 files for, be my guest.
But I do not give a single fuck about codec comparisons that deal with anything lower than 320 kbps cbr mp3.

Modern phones are a fucking tragedy. Massive folding glass bricks with a crease in the middle and no removeable battery or headphone jack why the fuck would I want that????

I once bitched about the lack of a headphone jack to someone and that retard had the audacity to tell me that "oh well have you ever taken a look at a schematic for phones? those things take so much power" WHY CAN MY MP3 PLAYER LAST DAYS ON A SINGLE FUCKING DOUBLE A THEN FAGGOT I seriously hope these people kill themselves.

As for size thing, in these last two years I've went from an iPhone 4 (perfect size for my hand it was great) to a pixel 1 and since the flash storage on that died a while ago I am currently using a Huawei P Smart 2019.

This chink piece of shit is so fucking huge it's ridiculous and Huawei in all their fucking wisdom decided that the notification center and control panel should be opened on different sides of the notch (a retarded design choice I don't care what those apple faggots tell me it's so fucking stupid just copy the Galaxy S9 you stupid fucking retard hippie money wasting faggots) and the size of the phone makes that extra annoying.

The new foldable shit as well is so stupid to me, flip phones are cool and I'd like to get this Japanese one which should work in my country (and hey, it runs Android and has stuff like NFC and a touch screen just in case because Android is not really intended to be used with physical buttons) but the stuff Samsung and the like are making are horrible. Folding tablets it's ridiculous, I have no need for this fucking display size on a phone or a crease in the middle of that display on my extremely expensive phone.

And let we not forget that they are all made out of glass now, drop it and enjoy your cracked screen, child.
