Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I love Lian Li and Fractal stuff. Also Arctic makes great CPU coolers.

I'm not saying there's necessarily anything wrong with Corsair or NZXT parts, but when that's ALL you have in your store, that's fucking boring.

Idk if you've ever been to Fry's back in the day, or a Micro Center, but they are/were amazing experiences if you like computer stuff.
I'd kill for a MicroCenter abroad. I'm tired of seeing NZXT Kraken AIOs in every physical shop I see.

Built my first computer with parts of a microcenter. Good times.

I hate that unity has ad makers that make you pause before clicking X. I will flamethrower them. It's always the same format before you can skip or forced interaction.

I hate mobile games that have ads. All of them. If you use popup ads I have to stop and start the game over I will commit war crimes.

I don't want any game interrupted up with some F list tiktok YouTuber nigger they paid $100 in their garish gamer room or with an apple phone headset in their car telling me I should play this game NOW.

There are plenty of mobile games with 0 ads that do well because they make a good game and don't Jew out to corpos who just want easy money.

I miss my iPod.
I miss my minidisc player.
I miss things being on vinyl and how much better they sound, even CDs have that weird tinny ‘thhhhwwwiiiiip’ sound on some stuff.

Any recommendations for an iPod clone?

The cumulative updates for windows are fucking horrific now. They're these massive 3 gig+ clunkers that sputter and wheeze and when they finally finish installing you read the patch notes and the most significant change is slightly improved performance for the Windows store version of Candy Crush.

I fucking hate India and Indians.

Any recommendations for an iPod clone?
Maybe:

It's designed for 'hackers' but I think it can also just be used as a normal device for normal people.
Not sure what the lead times are since it's "Crowdfunded".

I was going to get one, but I think I remembered now why I passed:

Take your pick from these modern Walkmen:

They all have microSD card slots AFAIK, and since 2TB ones are available now, you should be able to fit many FLAC tracks on one.

We didn’t have Fry’s or Microcenter. I remember CompUSA and Bestbuy(when it was a good store in the 90s and early aughts). I miss that experience.
I remember CompUSA and Circuit City. By the time I was a teenager, they were basically gone though, unfortunate. I do remember going through the isles looking at big boxed PC games.

I thought they were not made any more other? I just want something that looks, feels and works like an iPod.
I would honestly say just get an actual used iPod off Craigslist or something. Get the real deal. Yeah, you have to deal with iTunes, but I guess that's part of the whole iPod experience, if that's what you're going for. And unless you're trying to get the very first iPod or something, they're really not expensive at all.

I use one of those cheap, tiny MP3 players that clips on your shorts for when I go running.

I was going to get one, but I think I remembered now why I passed:

Eeeewwww. You can smell it through the screen.

I vaguely remember Circuit City. Only time i went there was with my parents to get a Packard Bell for my grandparents back in like 92/93. My grandpa was addicted to a casino suite of games.

Less RAM than a first gen iPod and way bulkier, enjoy not being able to have a shuffle database and a mystery lithium cell that will pillowbomb in two years

I just fucking hate touch screens for everything it's always so fucking inaccurate when typing it makes me want to break something
This. We've reached the point that throwing an ipad into the dash of a car is less expensive than a few switches dials or gauges, all of which are superior at being used and giving information without taking your eyes off the road.
This is the interior of a Mk4 Volkswagen Golf 97-2003 in Eu. It has 3 dials for hot or cold how hard the heat or ac blows and what position, all easily read by feeling if its in 12 O'clock 6 O'clock and so on. Compare this with a modern VW below

This is a Mk8 Golf 2020-Present, digital gauge cluster, ipad stapled to the dash as a head unit, buttons shoved into the steering wheel. Just the interior alone is a direct downgrade for creature comforts and ease of use, without even going into the mechanical aspect of parts being swapped to plastic vs steel or aluminium like the oill pan or valve covers and if im not mistaken even the thermastat (very bad idea if you aren't too familiar with working on cars) most people just buy an aftermarket aluminium one after the OEM plastic rots and or cracks.

Mercedes-Benz is also going overkill with screens in their new cars, one big example being the newly revealed CLA-Class:

The interior color being changeable according to the driver's "emotional state" gives me vibes of The Sims 4, which has an "Emotion" system that is just moodlets and doesn't pertain to actual human emotion.

And if you thought the overuse of screens was bad enough in European cars, Chinese cars do it even worse, as almost ALL of their cars have this exact same screen setup:

Chinese cars having this EXACT SAME SETUP is just as dystopian as the country itself.

Yeah I don't think I'm ever going to drive anything made past the 2000s, I'm pretty sure I already knew that, but, now all I have to deal with is increasingly poor quality parts! YAY

Some automakers have put physical HVAC controls on their lower trims of some cars, but replace them with either on-screen controls, capacitive touch controls, or other less convenient methods on their higher trims. Here's 3 examples:

Kia K4, which replaces a line of HVAC buttons with fewer HVAC buttons and a 5 in. HVAC controls screen between the driver cluster and infotainment screen:

Nissan Kicks, which replaces their physical HVAC controls and knobs with capacitive touch controls:

Ford Escape, which replaces HVAC controls by adding them to the larger screen on the higher-trims:

Sir, that's a poor spec Golf MK4. Here's the proper one, apologies for RHD photo:

Steering wheel buttons, I loved mine, minimal controls. Radio and cruise control buttons.
As for the climate controls, climatronic unit, I liked 3 dial manual climate control honestly, very simple and after some time you'd know where to set the dial intuitively.
