The biggest reason for the issues is that WebP is a relatively new image format... Firefox only added support for it in January of last year, and IE and Safari don't support it at all.no worries, webp is a confusing bullshit format since they're always labeled as something else. I see it used more and more on various websites lately. I'm sure there's some way they're convenient for the site owners but they sure suck for the end user just trying to save or edit an image.
The pros of WebP are pretty substantial, though:
- supports animation like GIF
- supports lossy compression like JPEG
- supports full 8-bit alpha (transparency) like PNG
- all while having significantly smaller file sizes for the same images
So it basically combines the best of all of the existing formats.
