Technically, do you need a Catholic Priest to confess to, if you already got Facebook

With friends and family, to confess all your sins to in a lenghty Facebook post.
According to James 5:16, where you should confess your sins to one another. Question is, is a Catholic Priest needed for that job?

(16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.)

Now i think the reason why this is done, is to make it uncomfortable for the person. So that the person will likely not sin again. Psychologically i guess its why it exists.

The one-on-one private, solemn discussion is where the occupation of therapist came from. And if anything the priest is probably better (outside of abnormal psychology which is more prevalent today [this website] ).

The good priest wont charge, is required by God to be patient and forgiving, and even required by the Vatican to never ever tell anybody what you said inside the confessional. It’s all very sacred. Not to mention a priest works like a half a day a week, I’m sure he can always find time to help by listening.

I mentioned one-on-one but a priest is also more than happy to help a married couple work through the valleys of their marriage. A failed marriage can harm many lives, particularly the kids. And all the priest wants is for his flock to be happy and healthy.

The therapist does too, but the only difference is he charges money. Not going to deride therapists anymore. They have helped people like Tommy Tooter stop eating out of garbage cans. But unless you have a serious problem, a therapist is like rent-a-friend and paying to whine on someone’s couch. And the therapist will continue to take your money because why not lol can’t blame him or her

But what if you meet Chris Chan in confession booth or this guy?

Airing out your dirty laundry to the world vs. in private to a guy who is bound by sacred oath to keep it confidential.

Priests have heard it all zillion times before. They most likely don't even remember what you personally have confessed. Though you should do him and yourself a favor by sparing him the raunchy details as best you can.

From what i hear, you have to confess every sin you can recall to a Catholic Priest so he can absolve you of those sins. (So likely those need to be put into consideration).
But i feel sharing it with everyone on facebook, your crimes and such feels less weasel like tactic. Since sharing it with one guy doesnt feel as effective. But then again i am not a catholic to begin with so never done the confession booth thing.

Now i am not calling Catholics weasels or anything. Well then again i have never met a Catholic outside a Mass i went into looking like a complete stranger to just to see what the faith is all about

edit: also this one is pretty funny too

I think there is a loophole in the sacred oath of confession. The priest cannot blab about what you said. But if you say “This is it I can’t take it anymore I’m gonna hurt some people” then I think the priest can try to stop you, or foil your plan in some way.

Any TradCathBros can verify?

Technically, shouldn't you be able to do this regardless of anything, as long as you repent? Pretty sure.

This whole thing is human invention anyways, additional rules for such a thing seem like fanfic versions of the original. Like, what would Jesus say? "You can't repent unless some dude in a robe is available", of course not.

So yeah, you can get "confessed" without the need of some dude or an Internet connection, just as long as you repent to god.

Memes aside, for the type of confession that most people are aware of (a small two-room box with a priest in one side), yes, you generally would need a Catholic priest.

Different denominations view it differently.

The majority believe you can "speak" with God any time, anywhere. For some that means you can confess any time, anywhere. Others believe that "confession" or confessing your sins should be done with a church elder or the likes, but when it comes to the act of "confession" otherwise known as the "Sacrament of Penance" in the catholic faith, the premise is that you are confessing your sins to be absolved by God through the administration of a priest, who then assigns penance.

Also you need to be baptized.
