I stopped watching his solar panel video when he started talking about how batteries were infinitely recyclable, I didn't even know there was a full on spergout about ICE and Drumpf at the end of the video wtf.

People's opinion on wind turbines, solar panels and nuclear energy are the ultimate litmus test.
The worst part is that he's not even wrong about lead-acid batteries. They are incredibly recyclable, which is part of the reason why they're used in cars even now: even when they reach their useful lifespan, you can recover the vast majority of the active components. Except for the plastic. Nobody talks about the plastic.
But to think that the same is going to apply to lithium-ion batteries anytime soon just because they're also batteries is pure lunacy. They're a completely different chemistry with completely different manufacturing that is utterly unlike the dip-plates-in-sulfuric-acid layout of a lead-acid battery. You cannot unwind a lithium-ion cell, or anything of the sort, without irreversibly destroying it; and neither can you simply "pour out" all the lithium and scrap the, uh, ions? No, you have to shred them and leach them in a bin, similarly to how gold is recycled from expired electronics. There is no physical reason why the recyclability of lithium-ion cells couldn't one day reach nearly 100% reuptake one day... but today is not that day, and technologies that would allow that simply have not been researched yet. Current technology that can theoretically do it like Supercritical Water Reactors are essentially the nuclear option to recycling, and are economically unfeasible just because of the energy and pressure requirements of maintaining a high-pressure vessel full of 700K water at several megapascals. But it would probably dissolve anything organic, lithium cells and their plastic layers included.

Doesn't help that Alec doesn't seem to realize the reason why there's multiple solar farms in the rural middle of cloudy nowhere is, most likely, subsidies from his beloved Biden/previous Democratic administration, not because of actual free market resources. He also very conveniently glosses over the fact that solar does not work during the night, when people still need electricity, and the sheer monumental effort required to build up enough battery storage to somehow move all that energy from the daytime to the night time, not even including the horrid amount of grid instability that (cheaper) grid-following digital inverters add (which was the entire cause of the Spanish grid failure a few months back), nor the fact that transmission lines are nowhere near as simple as he makes them out to be, nor the several times more solar you need in case on imperfect, non-sunny weather. And if another Tonga explosion happens and leads to a volcanic winter when you have an electric grid made up primarily of solar... wave goodbye to electric power for several years. Wind would also be harshly affected by a global dimming event, as solar energy is the primary component of convective forces. Solar is very much a short-term thinking globalist's wet dream, incredibly bad without major infrastructural investment in the medium-term, and perhaps mandatory only in the very, very long-term (on the timespan of tens of thousands of years).

I think all the green energy climate alarmists operate on the base assumption that we're already past Peak Oil and will run out of oil in the next century, so we need to find alternative energy sources fast, or return to a pre-Oil society.
Which even if it's true, why did we export all our manufacturing to the east, China, India, Indonesia, even Russia still has steel mills, where they don't care about environmental nonsense, still pump up Oil like it's an unlimited resource, have large operating coal mines, don't have even a fraction of even anti-pollution laws that the West has, so factories just billow smoke and carcinogenic toxic chemicals out into the air and drinking water next to residential areas? Even if the west completely goes green, they will still outsource all their manufacturing to factories that pollute even more, so that all the hidden horrible pollution is just exported to countries where they don't see it? This is doing nothing to address the long-term survival issues of our Western society and way of life. If anything, it will collapse to pre-industrial levels and we'll go back to living without gasoline, cars, electricity and mass produced items. Back to horse-drawn carts, farming by hand, and pre-industrial society. Renewables, as long as they rely on outsourcing the energy costs of manufacturing in order to be viable, are not the answer.

I like his popcorn button video. It's nice easy listening during a work commute.
I pressed the popcorn button on my microwave and it just worked. It worked perfectly, and it worked every time.
Commies want to take everything away from you, no matter how small. You can't trust a man in a suit, Momma taught me that.

A real God-fearing, red-blooded American uses his popcorn button if he damn well pleases, amen.

Only major risk factors he has is the emotional trauma of having his long-term common law wife cheat on him and take the kids afterwards, and his major depressive disorder.
Robert and his unnamed girlfriend weren't together nearly long enough to be common law (not that Missouri recognizes that anyway), she had an "emotional affair" (whatever that means), and her child wasn't his biological son.

But yeah, I worry about his mental health sometimes, although having things like the EV-1 project and the various things he does with Jared Pink seems to have filled his mental bandwidth enough that he doesn't have as much space for his brokebrain stuff.

He's also on antidepressants now. Which helps.

I've been watching him for a looonnnggg time.

Edit:
Techmoan and LGR are better on that. TC was ok on it, and especially on the tape format wars. And things like flash bulbs and crap. And old film. But when he starts up on the 'energy and enviro crisis' stuff he goes insane and rants about how Jimmy Carter was all great like this.

Might I suggest this guy:

He doesn't have hour long ultra deep dives but he has interesting stuff. Especially on old cameras, radiation gear, etc.

Sadly it seems most of his writing talent is wasted on being a writer for 'today I found out'.

And despite being French Canadian and wearing a bowtie he's actually done videos on firearms. And his cold opens can be fucking hilarious.

I think he's also somewhat leftist, with him incorporating more and more EVs into his channel,

Just because he likes EV's doesn't make him a leftist. He just thinks they're neat. It's why he bought two fifty year old General Electric lawn mowers. They're neat. I have an EV, they're neat.

I'm gonna have to press X on that.
The only acceptable EV is one that you built yourself from generic parts.

Been a big fan of Alec for ages up to this point...

And I still am. I think he gets a little too invective on social media sometimes, but even the speech about ICE thugs in his latest video I thought was even-handed, if treading the line of a bit too hostile toward the people he's trying to reach. If anyone gets menstrual enough about tone to disregard absolutely everything he said out of spite because he hurt Dear Leader's fee-fees... well, that's their problem. But I definitely think Alec could have turned down the fire juuust a little. People can act like toddlers when they feel threatened ideologically, and it doesn't pay to antagonize needlessly when one can be diplomatic.

No complaints regarding the part actually about renewables, though. I'm fairly certain he isn't against nuclear, going off of everything else I've seen from him. Even in the video, he mentioned how solar alone isn't the end-all-be-all of energy and used a purely solar future simply as an extreme scenario of how feasible it would still be to address energy with greener methods than the ones we're insistent upon using. Oil is one thing because of all the other uses it has, but even then I'd prefer we pivot our use of it more towards things like plastics (especially since that uses far less oil than burning it for energy). On the other hand, coal is just fucking awful and everything about "clean coal" is bullshit. The sooner we get that shit out of our grid, the better.

It's funny to see Null alogging the dude though. I noticed the clip on the sidebar.

I had him pinned as a right winger until I fell asleep listening to one of his videos and woke up to him bitching about trump
Really? I clocked him as a libtard the moment I heard his voice, plus the preachy addendum he had on a video years ago where he announced he would duplicate all of his videos so they'd be accessible to people with a particular disability (does anyone know what I'm talking about? It was something like he was going to remake every video in sign language for the deaf viewers or have an audible description of the videos for blind viewers, something along those lines).

Null had him on MATI once long ago when he had the long hair and said like what I thought, this guy's gonna troon out any day. He was getting close to looking like Ryan on AVGN for awhile.

I think it's two things with him in the most recent video. The stuff on renewables is mostly accurate and while leaves out some important points isn't bad. But making that rant and flipping comments over to subscribers only (and I'm fairly certain he's pruned the negative ones too) will absolutely sour him in the view of many.

The second issue is that his rant just so out of touch. Take the not-insignificant portion of the right who believes abortion is murder as an example. They've spent decades accepting that, in their view, society's been on a super holocaust level murder spree for decades and that's fine. Even their political allies tell them that they'll have to settle with only stopping some of the murders. Now Alec expects these people to react to "THE GOVERNMENT KILLED A COUPLE OF PEOPLE GUISE THIS IS REALLY SERIOUS"?

except that 99.9999999999999% of stock intakes are better than the cold air intakes that the aftermarket sell. the manufacturers aren't going to spend a billion dollarydoos putting an engine into a platform only to fuck it up in the last 5 minutes by drawing hot air from behind the radiator*.
The main bottleneck to "performance" is the ECM. Much like in the olden days, when increasing HP meant swapping the stock carburetor and stock distributor for aftermarket units that are adjustable. A lot of aftermarket car parts are the equivalent of a gas station boner pill, they work via the placebo effect.

The comments thing I'm on the fence on, I think it may have been a bit overkill, but looking at the quality of the dissent that was left on his prior video in lieu of being able to comment on this one, I'm tempted to say "and nothing of value was lost". But you're right, he didn't do himself any favors by making it subscriber-only.

But I don't really know what you're getting at with the abortion thing. The portion of the right which cares about that (which was mainly just fundamentalist boomers, who are all now dying off) only cared about the sanctity of life of fetuses until the moment they were born, at which point they become disposable livestock like the rest of us. It was only ever a soundbite for the fundies' sanctimony boner. They'll force the fetus to term and then happily let it starve immediately after (or apathetically shrug their shoulders with a token "thoughts and prayers" blurb when yet another US school is repurposed as a shooting range), so the whole spiel of "decades of murder" rings hollow. Fuck, the issue was pretty much settled across the entire Western world with "suck it up, righties, you lost this one" until Roe was overturned in the US.

Compare that to the dichotomy between "make it more feasible for undocumented immigrants to become registered citizens" and "let ski-masked rednecks round up anyone darker than Vin Diesel in unmarked vans regardless of actual citizenship status", I'm finding it hard to sympathize with anyone who cheers on the latter choice as "increasing safety and/or job security". Don't get me wrong: I may be left-wing, but I'm no troon-worshipping dangerhair. I think SJWs and identity politics as a whole have done irreparable damage to our side of the aisle because of how much of a "who fucking cares" the whole mess is when we have bigger things to worry about. But being a straight white male myself, whose job prospects are just as "threatened" by immigration as anyone else, I'm not exactly shaking in my boots that Pablo's H-1B expired because he was too busy mowing lawns for 80 hours a week (at $2.50/hr) to get it renewed. All this gestapo bullshit is just feeding into the idpol retardation from the other side. Is TC the right place to call it out? No. Ultimately, I'll agree with you on that even if I think he handled it well. I can sympathize with why he felt the need to, though.

This isn't the place for the abortion debate, so we'll just have to agree to disagree when it comes to the effectiveness of churches giving out food vs 'the poor can wait until we vote a socialist in'. This take I find particularly retarded. I'm not an American, I don't want to live in your country because I don't want to have my face eaten by a fent zombie for being white. So as one of those foreigners you love so much let me say this is absolutely retarded. Why would I as a non-American apply legally if you incentivize me to break the law and gain all the benefits and then get fast-tracked for doing so?

In most civilized countries the amount of services the Americans have that aren't tied to citizenship is insane.

To keep it on topic, Alec's crashout is getting mocked because if I explained how your system worked to the rest of the first world, they'd think I was lying. Seeing some fat guy who doesn't understand it defend it and close off comments will make people laugh at him. It wasn't well done.

and because I can't help myself.

You aren't the one it hurts, remember those babies you pretended to care about at the top of your post. It's their poor trailer trash families that need this work.

And so I can't be accused of anything, more on topic. Alec is the tech guy, he should do tech things. I spent years of my life getting a degree in political science, when I hear retards like him give braindead takes while not understanding how the systems he's crying about work I don't think "wow what an injustice" I instead feel like a nurse who's having it explained to them that vaccines really do cause autism.

in summation

All this gestapo bullshit
If you didn't want to Reich you shouldn't have made the Weimar

I've liked a lot of his content in the past but like many others knew it was only time before he let the politics brain take over. The real question now is how far does he go with this and how many more videos do we get before it's all just poli-sperging?

Edit: and if y'all's limit of car guy youtube is Aging Wheels (which is at the bottom of my list tbh) you should check out better channels like Vice Grip Garage, Uncle Tony's Garage, Dead Dodge Garage, Junkyard Digs (& Junkyard Mook), Pole Barn Garage, Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics, South Main Aauto, Wrenching With Kenny, Watch Wes Work, Rainman Ray's Repairs, Hoovie's Garage, Fuel Injection Sucks, etc.
What about Puddin's Fab Shop?
Just because he likes EV's doesn't make him a leftist. He just thinks they're neat. It's why he bought two fifty year old General Electric lawn mowers. They're neat. I have an EV, they're neat.
It also helps a lot that used EVs are comically cheap.
