I am not an electrical engineer, but I wonder how complicated is to implement the circuit that detects the polarity of the power source?
AC has no "polarity", it switches between + and - 50/60 times per second. When we talk about polarity we mean which conductor is live and which neutral. Live will have the full mains voltage, neutral should have no voltage, measured in reference to ground.
These days, when we rely on a separate ground conductor, it doesn't matter, as both the neutral and live are isolated from all exposed conductive parts that a human could come in touch with. But with plugs that are not polarized, that also means that you can't rely on neutral actually being neutral, it could be live, 50% chance. It only matters if you're measuring voltage in reference to ground, or if your wiring colors have a 50% chance of being wrong.
I'm not one either, bit there's no polarity in AC, you just use a bridge rectifier. Pretty easy.
Well, if you're not converting it to DC, you wouldn't use a rectifier. But it doesn't matter anyway as I said.

Polarized plugs are a legacy of days before a separate ground conductor was used, the N and E were combined into one conductor, so then you had to make sure that the plug didn't get reversed, or you'd electrocute someone. But as using a combined PEN conductor was unsafe, this practice was made illegal.

That's because the UK-style plug has a fuse in it
So does literally every string of Christmas lights I've ever owned, and not a single one of them is even a third the volume of a Yookay plug.
Nuclear waste is a problem, yes.
No it isn't, just ignore the "MUH PROLIFERATION" niggercattle and run it through a fast reactor and you'll burn it up and also get extra (hugely net-positive) energy from it.

My house was built in the late 60's and has super thick solid copper that DOES NOT WANT TO FUCKING CHANGE SHAPE OR BEHAVE AT FUCKING ALL AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH.
The old dude who owned my house until he passed away about 10 years ago redid all the wiring himself back in the '80s. Plenty of old-timey bodges, weird light switch wiring that's seems to be neither loop-at-the-switch nor loop-at-the-light, and the liberal use of electrical tape in lieu of proper connectors when splitting off a circuit into two or more separate runs.

But he DID use wiring that was overkill for the job. We're talking 2.5mm twin-and-earth copper for 240V 10A light circuits and 4mm for 240V 16A circuits to support standard 10A general power outlets (GPOs).

What frightens me almost as much as old mate's attempt at getting around the whole junction box malarkey is how these days, 1mm and 1.5mm twin-and-earth on 10A and 16A circuits respectively is commonplace for new builds in my part of the world.

I don't feel comfortable knowing that there is just 1A or so worth of headroom between the circuit breaker and the wiring. Yes, I know the circuit breaker should kick in before the wiring melts into an unholy mess and catches fire, but what happens if the circuit breaker fails? At least 2.5mm twin-and-earth on a 16A circuit won't necessarily burn one's house down if accidentally pushed to 20A.

Which means busting out the pliers when changing outlets.
and gloves when twisting said wires.

So does literally every string of Christmas lights I've ever owned, and not a single one of them is even a third the volume of a Yookay plug.
Modern switched-mode wall warts and inline PSUs are getting smaller and smaller... but also noisier and noisier. That's a completely different conversation though.

For anyone who wants to go down the rabbit hole of plug & socket autism even further, there's an entire online museum dedicated to the subject: www.plugsocketmuseum.nl
Here's some unusual early ones:

That's like my grandfather's house. He designed it himself in the 60's and knows every inch of that place inside and out. The wiring he's done to that place over the years... WEW LAD. The workroom in the basement is behind a hidden door that can only be opened by pressing on a print of dogs playing poker. I'm not kidding.

This guy's "partner" is a hilarious troon. They tried to do a few videos and even a new channel but then wiped all history of it from the web after the backlash.

EDIT: I am mistaken and have him confused with another YT techfag - please unhighlight while I wander off in shame

I remember like 10 years ago I saw a video by him that was pretty interesting, so I subscribed.
The next video in my subscriptions was him seething like a redditor that car's rear turn signals weren't yellow and claiming it would cause tons of deaths.
I then unsubscribed and forgot about him until this week.

JerryRigEverything, another YouTuber who keeps his politics mostly hidden
He started one of his main channel videos with BLM nonsense when the riots kicked off in 2020. He also whined a lot about America not allowing Huawei phones, for reasons obvious to everyone but him. That guy's insufferable enough for me to keep on my Don't Recommend This Channel list.

You wouldn't happen to have proof for any of it? Sounds interesting. I'm a casual viewer and never even realized he had any sort of partner, let alone a wife, I also always thought he was gay.
I tried looking through a few videos on connextras, to see if he mentions a partner there, but no luck. I decided to watch a connextras train video while washing the dishes (his dishwasher video almost made me buy a dishwasher, but I don't have the space for it, I don't even have 6 sinks). I never watched the second channel before, but I figured he may be more forthcoming about his personal live there.
  • He has a brother in LA, who he rode to visit, alludes to something going wrong with the reason for the trip not materializing.
  • Wonders whether he should be wearing a mask, vaccinated, while alone in his own room in the train.
  • Keeps talking about how pretty New Mexico was, doesn't show footage (:_(.
  • States that trains are more expensive than planes and take multiple days to travel across America, thinks more people would use them if they got more vacations. Now, I'm not an American, but if I was, and I got more vacation, I would still want to spend my vacation in the place I'm traveling to, not sitting 24/7 on a train.
  • Claims not to be a train fan, but a to be a train evangelist, at the same time. Huh? Starts a political segment, this video is four years old, so I guess he was political on connextras for far longer than on main. I am not familiar with American public spending policies and their criticisms, but it feels like he is heavily strawmanning the stance he opposes, or maybe his opposition is just retarded. Apparently, people are saying "Government should stop investing into trains, because the aren't profitable.", and the focus is on them making a profit. I'd think the criticism would be "they aren't profitable, because no one wants to use them, therefore it doesn't make sense for the government to keep operating them at a loss", but I dunno, I'm clueless on this. I do like trains, if for shorter rides.
  • Mentions the roomettes he is sleeping in being suitable for two people, and he does have two water bottles on the table, but I'm not convinced he's travelling with someone.
  • They don't make announcements through the speaker system after 10pm, he is not happy about this, because he didn't get info about a delay during the night. Again, I'm not familiar with train rides longer than a day, but if a delay happens in the middle of a multi day journey, in the middle of the night, why do you care? And how is it important enough for you to prefer being woken up in the middle of the night just to get this information? (ammendation: apparently the train takes breaks to refill water and such, when you can get off for prolonged amounts of time, so I guess a delay could be annoying, I still wouldn't want to be waken up over something like that).
And not much more happens. It was kind of an interesting video, but not as interesting as the main channel stuff. I think that if I ever went to America, I would take the train, since you can see so much (or rent a car, but I dunno how that works). I hope he keeps doing informative electronics and appliance videos, instead of going into politics.

Honestly I'm here for this kind of content. I want to see an autist sperg out over the stupidest of machines in technical detail that even the designing engineers find excessive.

Train autists on reddit constantly bring up Europe, It's basically the same debate as muh walkable cities that ignores the geographic difference between the American continent and Europe.

You can cover a fair distance by train for cheap because the infrastructure is relatively concentrated and easier to maintain and repair in Europe. Population is also more concentrated so more people will use public transportation.

Conversely, riding a train over here while relatively comfortable, is not nearly as cheap and convenient. It takes a while to get anywhere and trains are not as available. You really have to plan your trip in advance. Add to that NA climate snowstorms/freezing rain and the whole train commute seems way less appealing.

He should join Lindsay Ellis on Nebula along with the other breadtubers who fled YT.

... I just typed a long explanation for how I know this to be true and while typing the last sentence realized I have him confiused with another who does the same content and now I can't remember that name...

I always liked his old videos. The ones on the development of recording music or how old TVs worked. He also included some good footage showing the concept in action (like the 3 colored lights behind the slotted shield TVs to show how the color TV worked. Or the animation of the patent sheet of the sunbeam toaster). Shame he completely sperged out. When he inserted a random comment how annexing Canada was unacceptable in the middle of the video I tried to ignore it. Just a random flareup. But, like a wife finding her husband wearing her clothes "just trying out for fun" it ended up being a sign for things to come.

A lot of travel is subsidized, fuel for cars, cars themselves and roads. So you can subsidize trains or metros as well.

At the one hand trains are cool. They're big and efficient. They're more comfortable than buses and are pretty fast. Lovely to just sit in one and read a book, while the train gets you to your destination. If you care about electrification, you can run lines over them. No need for massive batteries. A good train connection replaced air travel from north to south in Italy. The flight simply wasn't feasible any more once the train was in place.

At the other hand. They're horrible. Other people riding them can ruin your experience. Loud phonecalls, bothering people, people riding without ticket that cause a scuffle, overloaded trains, train delays, trains being cancelled, the next train being extra overcrowded because now two trainloads of people have to cram in. Autumn? Two leaves on the rails kill all train traffic. Winter? Some frozen switch killed your commute. Delays are announced in the worst way possible. Instead of telling you a train won't make it, they'll tell you it's delayed for 5 minutes. Then after 5 minutes it's delayed for 10 minutes, then after 10 minutes it's delayed for 20 minutes, after 15 minutes, 5 minutes past the due time, they tell you the train isn't coming. For the 5 years I rode a train (20 minute trip) I've suffered countless lengthy delays, over 2 hours once. I've never had such a problem in the car, I've had delays, even long delays, but never as bad as 2 hours+ on 20 minutes. And if I really wanted to get somewhere in time, I could leave early and always be on time. Never a moment where I just got told halfway my trip I was going to be late.

If trains are going to be good, some politically unacceptable choices will have to be made.
1) Remove the brown. Browns cannot function in civil society, as long as they exist, they make public transport hell.
2) No longer use transportation as the dumping ground of burnt ministers that need a sinecure. You need a giga autist to make trains happen.
3) Accept you're going to burn a ton of money on subsidies, it's not going to be profitable, and your benefits will be indirect (better transport for your citizens, less cars on roads)
4) Don't stop for suicides. If someone walks close to the rail, don't slow down. If someone jumped, don't stop all train traffic for an investigation. Put those cattle catches you see on old steam trains on modern trains.
5) Have train station police that can remove people from trains, you need a way to quickly and efficiently remove drunks, white trash and karens if they cause trouble. They need to be able to get into the train, pick up the troublemaker, and carry him/her out of the train, so there is no delay
6) No NIMBY/greenpeace blocking new tracks.

But as long as retards like Alec are the ones championing trains, it won't happen.

I never really saw where people were coming from assuming he's gay. His content and humor is totally sexless and he seems to avoid the typical tells. It's never the ever ambiguous "my partner and I" in his recountings, always just himself. I figure that if he was going to troon out he would have done it by now. But he hasn't even gone by something like he/they yet as far as I've seen.
Why yes, I am fully aware I'm going to end up eating these words down the line. Thank you for noooticing.
