Telegram will surrender more of your data to governments, says CEO - I guess the French will kidnap you until you give them what they want.

With Telegram using end-to-end encryption (E2EE) with its Secret Chats feature, it has gotten quite the reputation for privacy-minded people who want to speak without people peeking in. As is the norm with privacy-focused services like this, E2EE is a double-edged sword; it prevents bad actors from snooping on innocent victim's data, but it also makes it harder to track criminals using the service for malicious purposes. Now, Telegram's CEO Pavel Durov has stated they will hand over more data to governments when asked.

As reported by Bloomberg, Telegram's CEO Pavel Durov has been put in a tough spot. Telegram supports E2EE to help protect people's data, but it has also allowed criminals to flock to the service to keep their bad actions hidden from law enforcement. As such, prosecutors in France have accused Telegram of abetting criminal activity by refusing to share personal information about its users.

However, a change in the app's terms of service hints that Telegram may have been the first one to blink. The terms now state that, if Telegram receives "valid legal requests" from a government body, it will reveal a user's IP address and phone number. This is likely in hopes of staving off the recent legal heat that the company has attracted recently.

Much like the E2EE, this new rule is, again, a double-edged sword. This new stance will allow law enforcement to work with Telegram to catch and arrest those who use the platform for nefarious actions, but some may worry that this will allow governments to peek into what their own civilians are discussing and risk their freedom of speech. In this case, it comes down to how vigilant Telegram is with allowing "valid legal requests" for personal information, and when it will draw the line.

Still, this announcement alone may be enough to cause people to leave the platform. And while there are services like Google Messages that use E2EE, it may take a while for people fleeing Telegram to find a home they can truly trust.

Silly people who believes in Telegram even though the only reason why they force you to give a phone number is to identify you.
Those organizing chats and the ringleaders usually know how to procure some burner number and use Tor to connect to the service, but most users don't bother because they're lazy and stupid, and that's how you get interrogated in France for "terrorism" for giving a thumbs up in a Telegram chat about revolting against the government.

Just use Session, SimpleX, anything that doesn't outright admits to try to identify you from the get go.

No one who cares about privacy uses Telegram. Their encryption claims have always been misleading. Signal, Session, and XMPP with OTR are the only things I would consider.

There was and is a lot of crime on Telegram, but I wonder if the same could be said for Discord? It isn't clear to me how much has been proven that Telegram did a poor job in moderation but I don't doubt it. Hopefully this doesn't become the new trend of just arresting people for running communities/software that are frowned upon.
TBH when I hear shit like this it just comes off as a Government power move designed to get the to bend the knee. Like the moment some shit comes out talking about being Free Speach and all of a sudden the news is running articles about anti semitism and racism.
Meanwhile Youtube has pedo rings operating in the open, Twitter wouldn't take down a child's nudes that were being used to black mail him, roblox is used for grooming, and literally what can't you say discord is being used for.
I'm sure it's about as much crime as any other messaging platform is getting, but Government loves a monopoly, and when you start putting a way in place that will stimey them even a little they'll come ready to beat you into line.

Lmao, that's exactly why this guy was arrested. Telegram wasn't under the glowies thumbs so "something" had to be done. Any service like telegram is already in the government's pocket or its creators being investigated for "crime." Welcome to dystopia.

This has been one of the more terrifying episodes in modern western civilization. This is corrupt authoritarian or totalitarian despotic levels of idiocy.

I don't get why this dumb slav nigger had to go to France despite knowing how much the West was hating on Russia.
