Terraria

This is why Minecraft will always fall short of Terraria. Terraria is a game. Minecraft is a toy.
I think you mis-read. I'm saying minecraft excels at letting the player create things.

While terraia is better at traditional progression and combat.

they are both games and toys. Thats just an arbitrary distinction and holds little value.

This is like saying that GTA IV will always fall short of GTA:SA, because GTA:SA is a game and GTA IV is a playable movie, yet the opinion differs with each person's preferences, with some saying that both of them are good on their own merit. They simply took different direction, hence some people will prefer one over the other. In case of GTA, it was a change in direction of what R* was doing, but in case of Minecraft and Terraria, it's more of a case how both games came to be.

With Minecraft, Notch was fucking around with countless little projects, until he made what became known as "Cave game tech test", which was just him making up some rudimentary game engine oriented around blocks. Then throughout Classic it was him making it more of a sandbox sandbox, until Survival Test where he his vision to making it a survival game, where Indev, Infdev, Alpha and Beta were gradually fleshing out the gameplay element more an more, with Beta 1.9 which became Minecraft 1.0 adding a "final goal" of some sorts.

With Terraria, it was clearly Redigit being inspired by Minecraft, which was at Beta 1.5 when Terraria was first released, however Redigit only took some of Minecraft's ideas and elements, and created a completely unique 2D game with his own vision which put a bigger emphasis on actual gameplay elements, such as exploring, fighting enemies, creating a character gear set and so on and so forth.

However by saying "one falls short of the other" is awfully short-sighted, because they were never meant to directly compete with each other, nor are they the same type of game. Do you also compare Factorio to modded Minecraft, because Kovarex's idea for Factorio arose from Minecraft mods such as BuildCraft and IndustrialCraft? I for sure don't hear anyone trying to make an argument like that with these two, even though it has the same concept of being a "Minecraft ripoff".

So please, stop comparing Minecraft with Terraria. This is as retarded as people comparing Coca-Cola with Kofola, because they assume it's a ripoff and a direct competitor like Pepsi, even though Kofola is nothing like Coca-Cola nor Pepsi, and if you say that to any Czech you'll get your shit kicked in for a good reason.

I'm thinking of starting a parallel playthrough on Master so it'll force me to farm rather than, well, farm.
I don’t recommend bothering with master mode. It doesn’t give anything truly novel like new mechanics, items, enemy behaviors, or accessories (outside of a couple decent but unnecessary mounts and boss trophies) the way normal to expert does. Enemies simply hit harder and die slower.

If you want something more challenging, I recommend mods that have higher difficulties like Calamity’s revengance or Fargo’s eternity mode since those have new content and mechanics to them that really change how you handle your load outs. Master mode is very shallow and repetitive by comparison.

Master mode sucks, they made their own challenge seed "For the worthy" that does add new enemy behaviors and mechanics if that's more your thing.

I’ve already done it myself but forgot to mention it, and yes I agree that’s the real master mode for 1.4 as far as I’m concerned. Meanwhile the everything seed goes a little too far in tedious unfairness since it’s basically ftw but with a shitty map and intrusive survival mechanics from Don’t Starve and is an utter slog to get through.

The "real" master mode is ftw on master mode. Though i imagine once the patch drops the ultimate challenge will be all special seeds combined (on master).

Sharing this update post celebrating Terraria's 13th year as of yesterday:

(Archive)

You have to give props to the Terraria team, they're just treasures. Still working on the game all these years later after numerous speculations of "final" updates, still interacting with the players and modders, they clearly love their game and love working on it to the point of showing no signs of stopping even now 13 years later. They're like a case study on how a good dev team should be, they make it easier to refuse that black pill regarding the current video gaming industry.

Still updating the game after 13 years is insane, for free even I honestly thought they were done ages ago. Makes me want to toss a few more bucks their way out of appreciation. Teams like this should be treasured.

I legitimately question who's even paying their salaries these days. Do people still buy Terraria? Does Re-Logic have any other projects going on?

It is the single most purchased game on steam. The updates they still make are far too small and take far too long for anyone to still be praising them for it. we waited like 5 years for 2 bosses.

Re-Logic to Eliminate Gender Definitions in Terraria’s 1.4.5 Update, 13 Years After Launch

13 years after launch they are now putting identity politics into the game for "inclusivity".
"the 1.4.5 update will also bring the end of the option to select your character’s gender during creation"
Old news, but I still really hate it. I want to play as a MAN, not some ambiguous blob! Why do these people feel the need to cater to a small sliver of subhuman filth?!

Can they just drop this fucking update already? Holy fuck.

There's no reason for them to remove gender definitions. Developing for the 0.000001% of dumb fucks on the internet when they could instead make various different characters to coincide with their fluctuating genders makes no sense but it is current year, rejoice for the removal of choice.

nigger, is you blind. Potion has been in the game since before 1.4.5

the fact they are just removing gender altogether is going to put a lot of people off the game, just dont forget you can make yourself a moonman outfit tho.

Literally no one believes this shit, Redigit. There are literally zero players who asked for this. The kind of people who demand this have played exactly 0 hours. The second this shit goes live, I'm flipping my review to negative.

No, Terraria isn't "maliciously" removing any options from its character creator in 1.4.5 - instead, creator Andrew "Redigit" Spinks says Re-Logic is actually adding them.

A rift has recently erupted among Terraria fans. Some players are upset that the sandbox gem's 1.4.5 update is introducing changes to the character creation screen - namely, the symbols designating whether a sprite is "male" or "female" coded are going away in favor of a more expansive and inclusive system with body types and new voice customization options.

Yes, that means that people complaining are distraught that the game is actually improving its customization features - and Redigit is having none of it. Responding to a post wrongly declaring that 1.4.5 will "maliciously" axe Terraria's "male and female" settings "13 years after the game's release," the dev asserts why that's inaccurate: "Before this update, body type and hurt sounds were linked."

Before this update, body type and hurt sounds were linked. Now that we’ve added voice customization (an often-requested feature), body type is a separate option. We didn’t remove anything; in fact, we’re giving players more control over their character.

Redigit continues: "Now that we’ve added voice customization (an often-requested feature), body type is a separate option. We didn’t remove anything; in fact, we’re giving players more control over their character." He clarifies in further replies that Re-Logic has "no plans" to remove the game's gender change potions and as for voice customization, players "can adjust your voice any time at a dresser."

In other words, Terraria isn't losing anything that makes it great - it's only gaining better customization options, some of which the community has long been awaiting. As self-proclaimed "Terraria enthusiast" and YouTuber Chippy writes, "I’ve been hearing the same hurt sound for 13+ years." I personally can't wait to explore the new voice options myself - that and the ability to become a vampire, of course.
