EV Startup Canoo has filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, so it has immediately ceased operations and its assets will be liquidated. / Archive

JUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 17, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Canoo Inc. (Nasdaq: GOEV), (the "Company"), a high-tech advanced mobility and energy company, today announced that it has filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 7 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The filing, made with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Delaware, will result in the federal appointment of a Bankruptcy Trustee to oversee the liquidation of the Company’s assets and the distribution of proceeds to creditors.

Despite being American-made, successfully delivering to such esteemed organizations as NASA, the Department of Defense (“DOD”), The United States Postal Service (“USPS”), the State of Oklahoma and having agreements with Walmart and others, Canoo has unfortunately been unable to secure financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (“DOE”) Loan Program Office. Recently, the company’s executives were in discussions with foreign sources of capital. In light of the fact that these efforts were unsuccessful, the Board has made the difficult decision to file for insolvency.

Tony Aquila, one of the company’s largest investors and Chairman and CEO said, “We would like to thank the company’s employees for their dedication and hard work. We know that you believed in our company as we did. We are truly disappointed that things turned out as they did. We would also like to thank NASA, the Department of Defense, The United States Postal Service (“USPS”), the State of Oklahoma and Walmart for their belief in our products and our company. This means a lot to everyone in the company.”

As a result of this filing, Canoo regrets to inform all stakeholders that it will cease operations effective immediately. A court appointed trustee will manage the liquidation of the company’s assets and our team will collaborate closely with the Delaware Bankruptcy Trustee to assist with the process.

Out of spec reviews, well, reviews the new Model Y, which now has a stalk.

Tesla's justification?

Our model 3 customers tend to prioritize style, and fun, so we retained the touch-sensitive controls, with a technological feel. In contrast, the model Y's primarily designed for families, so we chose a more traditional turn signal indicator that is easy for all family members to use

I think the average person's response is the same as the video host's:

That makes zero sense to me, whatsoever. I don't get it. But I'm happy this is here.

And despite EV simps praising Chinese EVs for being cheaper and having more features than yucky Elmo Tesla, GM LOL, or Gook cars, some of them have had recalls issued for them recently too:

BYD recalls FCB Bao 5 PHEVs for loose bolts in the integrated dual-motor controller which is a fire risk if they come loose

Xiaomi recalls over 30k SU7s due to the autonomous parking feature causing crashes

SAIC-GM-Wuling recalls over 1100 Baojun Yep SUVs because the Electronic Brake Assist can fail due to a programming error on leap years

I never would thought that Leap Year can cause a software programming issue to warrant a car recall, but the Chinese seem to amaze at that, for the wrong reasons. Also, how are car recalls handled in China, compared to how the NHTSA handles car recalls in the US?

The SU7's bug doesn't seem like that big of an issue if it was solved with an OTA. Tesla does the same thing. I'm not a fan of the always connected nature of these cars though but aesthetically the SU7 has to be one of the best looking EV one can buy that doesn't cost too much.

It seems the cybertruck, in its current form, is unlikely to be sold in the UK or EU (or any nation that applies the UNECE regulations on car lighting) any time soon. The big light bar on the front, which performs multiple functions, and lack of separate amber indicator lights at the rear makes it illegal.

VW will not be bringing the ID.7 sedan to the US, because of decreasing EV demand and Pmurt's recent policy changes.

And Jeep's Wagoneer S EV has tons of screens overkill, just like Chinese EVs:

At least there appears to be a volume knob and steering wheel buttons, but there's still capacitive touch controls and an HVAC control screen.

Tesla is interesting. Their cars seem to be decent for what they are, but they aren't a sudden major upheaval in the car industry that people make them out to be.
If you can get a used model 3 or Y, that's in a good condition with inspection, that's under 20k or so, not a bad deal.
Granted it's funny to see other EVs that are sold at tesla prices or high, falling insanely fast in value, and the cope from owners about how much they lost on them.
The EV reddits are a hilarious read right now.

To be fair, credit given when due. Tesla no doubt made EVs popular and attractive when they released the Model S over a decade ago. All the legacy auto companies only played catch up until now when we have somewhat parity in price to performance and features from the legacy auto makers and some new guys like Rivian. Tesla needs to innovate to remain relevant in the EV space going forward instead of resting on their laurels of being the apple of EV cars.
