Tesla in Autopilot mode crashes into parked police cruiser

LOS ANGELES — The latest crash involving a Tesla in Autopilot mode didn’t turn tragic, as some past ones have, but certainly was embarrassing.

A Tesla Model S veered into a parked police cruiser Tuesday, severely damaging both vehicles in Laguna Beach, Calif., a coastal community south of Los Angeles.

The driver, a 65-year-old from Laguna Niguel, Calif., told officers that he had engaged the car’s partial self-driving system, called Autopilot. “He told us in his own statement he was in driver-assisted mode,” police Sgt. Jim Cota said.

The driver suffered minor injuries, Cota said. The parked cruiser was unoccupied, the officer standing about 100 feet away off Laguna Canyon Road as he responded to a call.

Cota said the luxury electric car crashed in almost the same place as another Tesla about a year ago. The driver, he said, also pointed to the Autopilot system as being engaged.

The crash comes as Tesla has been facing scrutiny involving Autopilot. Since March, a driver died when his Model X SUV hit a safety barrier in Mountain View, Calif., while in Autopilot mode. And another driver in Salt Lake City was injured in a crash when her car hit a parked fire truck.

Regarding the latest crash, Tesla issued a statement, saying: "When using Autopilot, drivers are continuously reminded of their responsibility to keep their hands on the wheel and maintain control of the vehicle at all times."

The statement also said that Tesla "has always been clear that Autopilot doesn’t make the car impervious to all accidents, and before a driver can use Autopilot, they must accept a dialogue box which states that ‘Autopilot is designed for use on highways that have a center divider and clear lane markings.'"

Do people actually believe the original use of autopilot meant that pilots didn't have to do shit? Like the terminology just causes people to stop giving a shit.

At some point Musk has to get people to record themselves making a legal waiver to prevent shit like this.

That's pretty much the only job my gf has when we're on long trips, why is Tesla trying to make her even more useless to me?

Since they can update on the fly then it seems that they should be debugging this since the first instance.

I would hope they are but then again I've worked for large development shops and good luck with that.

There are only two scary departments in the US for software development. The FDA and the IRS and they don't fall under either.

They actually expect the average idiot to understand and abide by this. :story:

Tesla might not be liable because of this, but it's obviously a bad idea.

Because you're a poorfag and so is anyone else who can't drop 50K on a car.

Why would I do that when I can hire a taxi for much less or take the bus for a dollar fifty?

My $700 craigslist cars serve me just fine. I could swing a car payment for a Tesla but why? I suppose people do it to impress people. In that case, if an old Ford Highboy with peeling paint rolling mud tires and tattered "Idaho, The Gem State" mud flaps doesn't impress you, you aren't the kind of person I care to impress.

Spending 50,000.00+ USD for the privilege of gambling your life in the hands of experimental technology...how come we aren't all driving Teslas now?

So far as I know, these things are already safer than humans driving shit, at least when used as intended.

Remember that every single minor mishap one of these things has immediately gets some spastic clickbait article about it, while people continually kill themselves committing acts of idiocy on highways.

You know if I wanna play Russian Roulette I can do it a lot cheaper than buying a goddamn Tesla. Hell, I can buy a Fiat-Chrysler at a quarter of the price if I want a malfunctioning piece of shit.
