Some pages back, we celebrated bad album art but I wanna talk about how shitty album covers were in the 90s, especially for bands that had success in the pre-grunge era. And it wasn't even the fun kind of shitty.

It's easy to forget how people had written off metal as a dead genre at the time and a lot of these albums look like they're trying to hide what they are. Compare that to more recent releases from all of these bands, from an era where the survival of an entire genre was no longer in question

Now that I'm putting this post together another thing that stands out is how all of the latter-day albums have a version of each band's "classic" logo, prominently displayed, and all their siblings from the 90s have more plain typefaces and some of them aren't even easy to find.

ATEIGGÄR releases their first album named "Tyrannenmord".

I dare to say this is a strong contender for my top album of 2022. At least Black Metal wise.

Ateiggär are part of the Helvetic Underground Committee. The HUC is a small circle of bands from Swiss, mostly Black and Death Metal.

I highly recommend UNGFELL if you are into folkish BM. Their first demo is a total PESTE NOIRE rip off but nevertheless a 10/10 release. Over time they managed to find their unique style.
WYRGHER only released an album and an EP so far and if you are into Jef "Wrest" Whithead's LURKER OF CHALICE you should give Wyrgher a listen.
DEATH.VOID.TERROR plays a harsh mix of Death and Doom Metal.
DAKHMA does noisy Black/Death Metal.
KVELGEYST plays Black Metal and should be a to-go for fans of bands like LUNAR AURORA, NAGELFAR, NOCTERNITY, etc.
URGEIST is done by the same individual who does Kvelgeyst but it's more folkish Black Metal.

I posted about the new Aurora Borealis album a while ago, but now it's out and it is pretty fucking good.

Haven't kept much up with this years releases, but I liked the Darkthrone album that @Onni Kalsarikännit posted last page. Tried replying then, but the site was shitting itself at the time.

Bumping this thread to say that Ruby the Hatchet's new album kicks some serious ass:

Some older albums that I've enjoyed but haven't posted yet:
some NWOTHM and...
jazzy Doom Metal based on the Dark Souls series.

Does anyone else think At the Gates suck? People say you'll like them if you like Dissection, who I love, but I checked out their supposedly best album, Slaughter of the Soul and it really wasn't that good... just p damn meh.
Not sure what to think of modern metal bands like Thulcandra and Ninkharsag that attempt to redo Dissection's sound. Ninkharsag seemed like he had some of its own sound, which was good and sounds p dope.
Did anyone ever listen to Sunyata by Acrimonious? Phenomenal album.
Relistening to Leprosy by Death.

I liked the first two AtG albums but Slaughter was boring as all fuck. Basically a pop album with harsh vocals.

Despite having the legendary illustrator of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Flying Dog beer labels/box art Ralph Steadman, holy shit that Exodus cover is not metal and just terrible.

November is as we all know reserved for one thing, and one thing only; black metal.
Recently discovered this Finnish banshee and her one-woman DSBM project

Never liked ATG. If I want to hear something similar to Dissection I stick with Necrophobic.
But speaking about Dissection-a-like-Metal: In the early 2000s some friend of mine had a band going on called Ivenberg.
They did 2 demos and then their first album ("Non Spiritual Dimension") in 2004.
Unfortunately nearly everything is scrubbed from YT. This is the only song left.

Around 2005 nearly everyone from the original line-up left and the only remaining member wanted to turn the band into something bigger. So he turned it into something more Pagan Metal like and the band became very gay. They did two other albums -both gay-, the big break through never happened and the band ended.
Their original drummer died some years ago bc of drugs.

Maybe their early stuff is out there on some obscure site. I highly recommned it to every Dissection fan.

I think Flotsam and Jetsam is the one that actually pisses me off. They had a run of generic covers in the 90s but that one looks like it could be a U2 album.

I looked thru some album covers for something that bad and found I own that shitty Exodus on tape... nothing else was so out of place. If you know this artist he's not a great choice but capable of doing something better that would fit a metal album. It seems like bad art direction like Exodus or the label told him the title and said "just do whatever" and he gave them some garbage. Maybe they wanted it to look not-metal though as they changed their sound up and covered Elvis Costello and Rolling Stones with a horn section. Not really a recommended album.

Yep even Gary Holt hates that album. MTV and its consequences.
