I'm not (currently) a black metal guy, but there's a song on Meshuggah's latest album (Immutable) that has a song "Black Cathedral," which is apparently an homage to "second-wave black metal."

Anyways, I'm hungering for more of that style from "Black Cathedral". I've been listening to Enslaved (which is apparently "Prog Black Metal") and I like it, but it's not really scratching my current itch. If anyone can recommend an album, I'd appreciate it.

Gave it a rip, my favorite was Darkthrone. Thanks for the suggestions, was enjoyable. I also did some reading about history of black metal and "second wave" black metal, which was fascinating.

I tried out Slugdge and I like it. This lead to me to do a "bands like.." search and find another group, Hath, which I like even more. Big ups.
Slugdge are a fantastic band despite how stupid they sound on paper.

Without stating your current age, post four albums that were released the year you turned 16.

If you actually want to become a fan of it, start with these albums,
these are like the definitive black metal starter kit albums:

Post goes for pretty much everyone who wants to get into the genre as well (if you're not already a fan but want to be)

Wait a minute. When I post four albums from idk 1996 you know that I was 16 in 1996. When you know I was 16 in 1996 you know that I was born 1980. When you know that I was born 1980 you know that I'm 43 now!

Nice try, CIA, nice try.

It's not a good list, but it's about what I'd expect from a rag like Rolling Stone. It looks like they're just trying to cover their bases by putting on shit like Evanescence & RATM along with Bathory & Venom and a sampling of everything in between. Could have been worse.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath at number one kinda made me chuckle, but I don't really disagree with it.
also *Transilvanian. idk why that typo is so common but i prob notice it more since I have the shit on vinyl
Most English speakers write "Transylvanian Hunger" because that's how it's spelled in English. The mix of the English "Hunger" with the Romanian spelling of "Transilvania" is offputting even to me.

I do like Kyuss, though, as I like the fuzzed-out sludgy style of riffs that almost cross over into doom metal, and John Garcia's voice is very unique as he does not scream, but has a very harsh and raspy voice that goes well with the effect of tripping balls in the middle of the desert, which is basically what Kyuss is about.

A few for whoever was looking for Black metal basics, some of the greats were already mentioned (I love those Ulver albums) but I don't think I saw these:

Mayhem- this is the one after vocalist Dead shot himself and Burzum briefly joined before killing the guitarist. If the story wasn't crazy enough it's also a great classic album.

Bathory Blood Fire Death- Quorthon started in the early 80s but this was their turning point into more atmospheric folk influenced sound

Rolling Stone is two generations past their relevance. It was sold a few years back and is mostly a pay to have an article kind of service now. There is too much metal to give hard rock and nu-metal any real estate here. Would be better to have 5 or 6 different subgenre lists, but anyone who still reads Rolling Stone monthly is a certified boomer so it would be wasted on them.

Based. Now what do we have here? Ah yes, the typical hodgepodge of milquetoast radio friendly entries along with the obligatory AC/DC, Led Zep, Van Halen and King Crimson  gender genre misfilings. Where are Supernaut, Megalomania, Hole in the Sky you niggers? Not that anything off Paranoid is bad but God damn there is so much better stuff out there by the same band.
Of course in the year of our Lord 2023 the retards who put together these top gorillion lists don't even listen to the music anymore so who am I kidding.
