Here is a list with 20 metal albums released in 2023 and that I really liked and listened to a lot.

Two rules I kept for myself:
1. Just albums. No EPs, splits, demos or anything else. Only full albums.
2. If the band isn't listed on Metal Archives it doesn't count.

If you don't like Black Metal or Stoner Doom you can completely ignore this post. Sorry.

PRIEURÉ (FRA) "Le départ"
If you are a sucker for French Black Metal like I am and you like bands like Autarcie, Baise Ma Hache or Caverne this is a no brainer. 40 minutes of melodic and patriotic French Black Metal mixed with some accoustic parts here and there and a production that is a bit cleaner and polished than the mentioned bands.

THE GAUNTLET (USA) "Dark Steel and Fire"
Just look at this fucking awesome cover artwork! And the music? Total fucking Bathory worship! Like the guy behind the band took the first 4 Bathory albums and smushed them together and that's it and it's so fucking great. Fucking love it.

1705190667691.png
TETRAGRAMMACIDE (IND) "Typho-Tantric Aphorisms from the Arachneophidian Qur'an"
Pure chaotic Black/Death Metal violence from India's finest with a heavier sound than their previous stuff.

1705191109080.png
DER TOD UND DIE LANDSKNECHTE (GER) "Wir fürchten weder Tod noch Teufel"
What I'm I supposed to say here? I'm a huge sucker for this catchy RAC/Black Metal stuff. It's Wolf on vocals and it sounds like a continuation from ABSURD's "Totenlieder" and "Blutgericht" albums. If you like these two you should like this one here instantly.

1705191508858.png
WIZARD MASTER (Italy) "Ablanathanalba"
Black Sabbath worshipping Stoner Doom Metal.

1705191846825.png
BEHROSTH (Russia) "Witchcraft Aristocracy"
Weird psychedelic Rock/Black Metal from the western Siberian outback. Like early Black Magick SS but rougher and weirder.

1705192189823.png
NARTVIND (Belgium) "Breath of Night"
Total evil misanthropic old school Black Metal worship. Recorded with a rotten potato.

1705192340145.png
OBSIDIAN GRAVE (USA) "Blood of the Night"
One word: Judas Iscariot. If you miss Black Metal in the vein of Judas Iscariot look no further. If you never have heard Judas Iscariot and don't know what I'm talking about you better start checking out Judas Iscariot.

1705192566980.png
BOTULISTUM (NL) "Botulistum"
Founded in 1998 and after a couple of splits, EPs and demos these clochards finally recorded their first album. If the word ugly would be music it would be Botulistum. It's ugly, it's rough, it's beautiful. And the Urfaust drummer is involved bc of fucking course he is.

1705193118690.png
IBLISS (Malaysia) "Bintang Fajar"
The ugliness continues and I have no idea what the fuck is going on on this artwork but it captures the music pretty good. Dirty, disturbing and disgusting but sexy Stoner Doom Metal.

Continues in my next post ...

Part 2 of my super cool top 20 AOTY 2023 list, take 2 bc the forum runs like ass and the server are only hold together by duct tape and tears.

cardinals folly live by the sword.jpg
CARDINALS FOLLY (Finland) "Live by the Sword"
Doom Metal but more traditional Doom Metal without Stoner but with NWOBHM woven into it. Basically for fans of bands like Witchfinder General or Lord Vicar but with more speed.
"Sometimes speed is the ace of war
Our riffs, the heavy metal law
Quick galloping cries through the woods
From the last bastion of doom!"

sloth sloth.jpeg
SLOTH (USA) "Sloth"
This album has printed "Electric Wizard Witchcult Today" all over it so if you can't stand this sort of Doom Metal this album will make you mad. They literally start the first song after the intro with a Electric Wizard rip off riff haha
Me personally I can't get enough of this stuff. Never ever. Never ever ever.

neo inferno pleonectic.jpg
NEO INFERNO 262 (France) "Pleonectic"
15 years after their debut album this French all-star Industrial Black Metal project is back with their 2nd album and they amped up the Industrial game to 11 thanks to AI. Imagine the matrix invited Clive Barker's cenobites and Pinhead and Agent Smith decide to do a shitload of acid. The boundaries between human created and artifically sounds blow up more and more with each track. It's a fever dream and the perfect soundtrack for the age of technologically dystopia. Death is overrated, the machine lives forever.

church of misery born under a bad sign.jpg
CHURCH OF MISERY (Japan) "Born Under a Bad Sign"
It's always a good year when Japan's finest Stoner/Doom Metal outfit shows up and has some new songs about murder and mayhem in their bag. 6 songs plus the traditional cover song telling the stories of the "Most Evil" Fritz Haarmann, the infamous H.H. Holmes and David fucking Koresh among others. While the Black Sabbath is strong in COM they developed their very own distinctive sound and have become easily one of the best in the whole genre if not the best of the best. In my books COM can do no wrong. Always heavy and yet always catchy and Rock'n'Rollish.

"Would you use a gun, if somebody came in here?"

"They come in here with a gun, and they start shootin' at us, what would you do? Tell me, be realistic. This is America, this is not Austral- this is not Europe. This is not where a country overthrows a bunch of people, takes away their weapons, so that the people cannot argue any issues! Did King David have swords? Did Jesus tell the apostles to 'carry a sword with you'? Yes."

pew pew ded feds

sulphur aeons seven seals seven crowns.jpg
SULPHUR AEON (Germany) "Seven Crowns and Seven Seals"
The fourth Sulphur Aeon and probably their smothest so far. Heavy and brutal but yet melodic Death Metal mixed with cultish like sing-a-long clean vocals, praising the Old Ones behind the stars and in the deep seas. Probably to soft for die hard Death Metal fans but nevertheless I highly recommend to listen to all their four albums in a row. It's a great journey and to see (hear) how Sulphur Aeon have evolved over the years and from their very beginnings. Oh, and the artwork! Once again absolute stellar artwork *chef's kiss*

arnaut pavle transylvanian glare.jpg
ARNAUT PAVLE (Finland) "Transylvanian Glare"
Motörhead meets Darkthrone's first three Black Metal albums. Evil necro Punk Black Metal in your face, uh!

vesperal nuit blanches.jpg
VESPÉRAL (Canada) "Nuit Blanches"
Quebec has become a Black Metal stronghold over the last decade and Vesperal are no exception with their debut album and it's unpolished, punkish, melodic Black Metal. An album where you hit the repeat button before you know what you are doing.

urfaust untergang.jpg
URFAUST (NL) "Untergang"
The farewell album and the perfect culmination of the evolution of 19 years making music and getting shitfaced. I'm an Urfaust Ultra since the very first beginning and always will be. Ther will never be such an extraordinary and outstanding band as them and their hypnotizing mysterious drunken weirdo Black Metal.
And now one of my all time favourite bands says goodbye. Sucks but they leave with an absolute banger of an album. R.I.P. Urfaust.

curtan wall.jpg
CURTA'N WALL (USA) "Siege Ubsessed!"
Some may now say "Wtf, this is no metal!!!" and I answer with "Probably but they have a Metal Archives page lol". This is, by far, one of the most creative albums I have ever heard. The love for details and the musicianship that went into this album are mind blowing. I'm dead serious when I say that since it's release there was not a single day where I was not listening to this masterpiece at least once. I can't get enough of this wild mix of folkish Metal/Rock music with Black Metal styled vocals, silly synths, auto tuned female vocals (absolutely beautiful!) and nerdy instruments. The moment the first song starts and the accordeon hits I fell in love. For real, listen to the first song "Siege ubsessed" and then to the last songs "Chainmail" with it's genius guitar solo and tell me that this sucks. You simply can't. If you love music you simply can't. The whole album is filled with good vibes and hilarity only. If I would have to describe it with one word only it would be this: Fun. If writing and recording this album was just half the super fun I have when listening to it some people probably died while creating it. Chapeau to the people behind this gem of an album, this lovely piece of naive art.

bmss bb.jpg
BLACK MAGICK SS (the outer space) "Burning Bridges"
Ok, I'll admit it. I cheated. This album breaks my 2nd rule bc they have no MA page but fuck it.
When I said that you have now idea how often I listened to the Curta'n Wall album then you have absolutely no fucking idea how often I listened to this one. What I said about the Urfaust album being the perfect culmination of their whole career counts twice as much as for this new BMSS album. BMSS have constantly evolved in their sound and probably lost some with their last album "Rainbow Nights" but what they started on "Rainbow Nights" they continue here and amp it up to 11. As an example, the song "Let go" should have no right to be on a BMSS album bc of how far this song has moved away from BMSS's style from their very first demo and yet it's easily one of the cheesiest but nevertheless best songs I have ever heard in my whole life (no exaggeration, I'm absolute serious). This song oozes 80's disco mud and has no right to be this good but if you don't get lost in the saxophone solo you are indeed dead inside. Open your ears and your hearts and let the magick in! The whole album is the perfect combination of old and new BMSS in every single second of it's runtime. One catchy banger song followed by catchy banger songer with lots of throwbacks and memberberries. It's not perfect, it's the perfection of perfection. I hail the mastermind that is Will F. and one day he will become bigger than Jesus because of his creativity and love for music. Ok, he very likely won't but he should abd this album is my personal AOTY 2023.

Overall 2023 was a very good year. Just to give you an idea: This year I had a list of great albums with over 250 entries! And still not counting all the great EPs, demos and split albums 2023 brought us.

Danish death metal from the gutter.

(Eng: "Sliced into Pieces")

Live in Germany with a good variety of stuff across albums. Pretty fucking awesome live sound engineering.
