Tbh that's what I liked about Lordian Guard and Holy Empire. It was weirdly thin in guitar, but also felt grandiose in a way. Hell, my favorite stuff was the Lordian Winds demos that were primarily acoustic , but still had that more fantastical lyrics.

Anyways, appreciate the Warlord spergery.
 
My recent discovery: a Polish band called Kobong. They only released two albums in the mid-90s. The first one is very natural sounding groove metal (?) with lots of catchy riffs and slap bass. The second one is much more proggy with triggered drums, odd time signatures and weird, experimental interludes.

There's an amazing thrash metal album called Extravasation by some random Russian band from the early 90s called Aspid. I tried to find it for years after I heard it, it's great, but the version "officially" on most music platforms is some shitty sped up version. So Apparently Famine of Peste Noire got sued after breaking some faggot's glass jaw during some kind of protest. As he result he had to pay around a €70.000 fine and had to sell his house so he's broke now. Pretty messed up.

If you're interested in interviews with (death) metal musicians, give Cali Death Podcast a listen. Members of the band Odious Mortem talk to lots of musicians from bands like Nile, Gorguts, Death, Archspire, Spawn Of Possession, Cryptopsy etc. every week.

By the way, I just listened to their conversation with Chalky from Psycroptic from last year and realized that he's doing two gigs in Aussie in December with people from all over the world. Imagine flying from Norway or Germany to Australia just to stay there for a few days, damn.

So over the past week I've had a real deep dive into post Dio (the first time) Black Sabbath and honestly I'm speechless. All this time I was assured that it was absolute fucking dogshit all the way down with them progressively getting worse after Sabotage, with the only 'good' Sabbath album post-Ozzy being Heaven and Hell...but the music is actually real damn interesting.

Dehumaniser might genuinely be the best Dio Sabbath album and it reminds me so much of the switch Judas Priest made when they made Painkiller. TV Crimes is rapidly going up my list of favourite Black Sabbath tracks.

The Mob Rules carries on the vibe of Heaven and Hell without missing a beat, it's not the significant downgrade people make it out to be. Country Girl is a banger, even if the key riff is basically a recycled Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.

Born Again is an interesting one, I dismissed it completely from the get go because of the absolutely awful album artwork but Ian Gillan's vocals actually work well with Sabbath and he certainly gives it his all.

The Tony Martin albums are interesting too because his vocal style is basically knockoff Dio and it's clear that that's the direction that the band wanted to go... just without Dio.

Honestly the more I'm listening, the more I'm convinced the entire narrative of Black Sabbath was shaped by a bunch of doom metal manchildren who couldn't get over Black Sabbath continuing without Ozzy. The riffs are great, the solos are great, the core band has been talented throughout their entire run and there's barely been any 'bad' tracks in the whole discography.

Dehumanizer might be the heaviest Dio Sabbath album. I is supremely underrated, that riff is just crushing.

the Martin albums are my favorite Sabbath albums. Just the vocal performance on Anno Mundi is great.
 
I want to add that Trashed off Born Again is my favorite Black Sabbath track. Long has been a pre-game favorite of my brother and I.

“So we started on the whiskey just to steady our brains because there was no tequila!”. Digital Bitch and Disturbing the Priest majorly rule too.

Just wanted to post Impetigo in here as I've listened to their whole discography in the last 3 days and I'm honestly impressed how gross this is for late 80s/early 90s. Almost like an American Carcass, some of the best death-inspired grindcore I've heard in a long time

I think what made me a fan was when Gut named them as a big influence when they started. I can't remember where I saw it, but one of the guys in Gut said Impetigo was the main inspo. When you listen to their first couple of releases you can definitely hear it

Sucks that Burton never did any growling after the first album, he was damn good at it. I would call SOANM an underrated album.

Fear Factory - Flesh Hold

It would be interesting to hear a mix between that and Demanufacture - death metal/grindcore with more "modern" sound, samples and the occasional synth.
