I think the last good Darkthrone album was The Underground Resistance, everything since then has been mid at best. I don't like this new track too, it feels like a slow and boring version of a Deathhammer song.

They're certainly unique compared to other melodeath acts. Shame this band's new output didn't keep up the quality.

The Isolation Game had its moments. I also recall enjoying the Restless Memoirs EP. Shit, I just noticed they actually have a new album out. I don't expect much after Cold Inferno, but I suppose should at least try.

So, new Dimmu single just dropped.


As a fan of the band from the "Puritanical..." era, this sounds like a step above "Eonian" but not by much. These guys truly never recovered after ditching Mustis, Barker and Vortex.

At the same time, I agree with some folks who say "uhh but their 'Stormblast' and 'Enthroned...' era albums were composed without those three", yea well they still can't really recapture the atmosphere and sound of those old records either.


The difference just with Mustis and Vortex in the band was substantial. "Spiritual Black Dimensions" is one of my favorites of them.


I guess Shagrath & Co are in "autopilot" mode, in a way.

Man I've tried to get into Neurosis, kept their "Times Of Grace" in loop for a few months in my music player back in the day. Amazing album, no question about it, but it never got me exploring more of their discography; I may need to give them another chance.

I've been a fan since the Godless Dimensional Reign tour, though I was too young to be allowed a Cunt Hunters shirt. Probably for the best.

But yeah, this new stuff is insipid ChatGPT metal for women in Alchemy Gothic dresses.

Try Eye of Every Storm, that one's a lot less dense and roiling. Still has the fury, but they learned how to control it, pretentious as that sounds (I sense this isn't the thread for me to start sounding like a Wire reader).

Can recommend some of their 90's live work, they were shockingly intense.

I swear this live version of "A Succubus In Rapture" is 10x better than the studio version, Mustis was just THAT good.

As for Neurosis - holy shit that bootleg recording sounds super nice and crisp, thanks for sharing! checking it out now. Crazy to think that these guys started as a HC band.

There's a "thickness" to their sound that I've never heard from any other band, I really like their work but I need to give them another good listen to truly appreciate it.

Dimmu Borgir is a brand now. I'll cop to liking Death Cult Armageddon-parts of it, anyway. Stormblast, Enthrone and Spiritual are also fine albums. Booting Mustis and Vortex was a terrible mistake. I think forcing Nick Barker out of the band-allegedly because he wasn't Norwegian-was also a bonehead move. I heard nothing of Abrahadabra except "Gateways" and decided I wasn't missing out on much and I didn't bother at all with Eonian. I didn't see the point. Their publicity photos now are good for a laugh and that's about it. Neurosis is a bit of an acquired taste. I bought Through Silver in Blood on a lark in 2007 and didn't take to it immediately. I found that I had to be in a certain mood for it, which soon presented itself when I was dumped via text message. Good times.
