Must like most older men (35+) I sort of fell victim to listening to the same shit I've been listening too. I swear to you guys since maybe 2020, I had only listened to 2 new bands. I have been on a self hosting journey these past few years and I simply wanted to get off of Spotify and take back my algorithm, so I started using Plex Amp. I wanted to share a newish band that I stumbled on and that when I listened too that really surprised me. It was DeafHeaven's Lonley People With Power. I know they are calling this genre "black gaze" but I just consider it Light Black Metal. If you haven't checked it out, here. It's a decent listen.

I'm going to be a lot more active in this thread because I am curious to know what other kiwis are listening too, both new and old metal.

I also like the earliest material of the better known death/doom bands, as they tend to be considered "too death metal" by doom fans, so are often overlooked by both sides. My Dying Bride used to be sickos.
My Dying Bride have an incredible discography. I understand that people want to hear a difference between their genres of metal, but I feel My Dying Bride has done a great job in combining elements of both genres. My Favorite Albums are: The Dreadful House and Songs of Darkness, Words of Light.

Exterminate and The Inexorable are also incredible records that I keep coming back to. I wished they ended off things on a higher note than what we got on the disappointing Of Lucifer and Lightning.

been listening to a lot of Gauntlet Ring and Fellwinter as of late.
Love a lot of the stuff from B&C, but I can't stand the jewish psy-op that is the FOMO vinyl sell outs that instantly happen the moment they're put on the site and then flipped by jewish resellers on eBay and Discogs.

I have been slowly going through Megadeth's discography and "Cryptic Writings" certainly is something. Not sure what exactly but something.
What exactly happened in the 90s that made a lot of bands lose their shit and go insane ? Did they all got burned out by their success in the 80s ?

These days I can't really stand symphonic metal anymore but back in the day I was a big Therion fan. Kind of amusing to revisit from time to time, their albums are all over the place.
I'd rather listen to their namesake though, which ironically I didn't care for back in the day.
