I'm...not a Calvinist. I'm a catholic; and not a practicing one either. I have no issue with gay people on a religious ground; I just find the idea of being sexual with another man to be gross and off putting. I have nothing against you all personally; but generally anything that isn't straight, white and English evokes a feeling of disgust in me nowadays. You're no different to the Blacks, Jews, Muslims, or Italians in that regard.

It pretty much sums up my entire feeling on the matter.

I'm not an atheist and quite frankly, I detest atheists even more than I dislike fundies. I do think abortion should be legal.

I'm an American and I do know we have a lot of Europeans on here, so maybe it's different over there but in the USA, the anti-abortion stance has become synonymous with fundamentalist Christianity, so I just assumed.

But if it makes you feel better, the state of sex ed in America is very likely ten times worse than it is in the UK.

You’re allowed to abort Downs Syndrome babies in the USA too? I think like 93% prenatal detected downs syndromes cases in Hawaii result in abortions. It’s probably one of the most common fetal diagnosis that result in a wanted pregnancy being terminated worldwide . (With genetic blood testing DS can be detected by six or seven weeks now) Its the most common of the trisomy defects.
As many people have discussed in this thread Down syndrome is a very significant disability. The people portrayed in media and your local Wal-Mart greeter are a minority and the absolute best case scenarios, and they still cannot ever live without supervision and daily support.
It’s a surprisingly long list just because certain things just don’t show up until certain organs and structures are more developed. I know waiting for an anatomy scan at 18 weeks was one of the most anxiety riddled months of my life because I had found SO many conditions that didn’t present until that critical period. It’s why they do the in-depth scan at that development point. It’s the earliest point many of these things can be seen. Many are just detected or “signs point to” but may take another month to be confirmed or to know the severity.
Genetic blood tests have come along way but there’s still a large segment of issues only detected later in pregnancy or even after birth.
I don’t particularly have any desire to debate abortion or religion but I do like having civilized conversations with people that have other points of view, particularly on subjects like this which are the complex grey area.
I find the religious people using extreme medical interventions to prolong the life of futile cases very confusing because they do often speak of “gods will” while doing it.
The more extreme fundie religions doing it doesn’t surprise me, they tend to be contradictory and big on fads that reflect the era. It did surprise me that the Vatican has intervened in some of these cases in the UK for this very reason. I can’t quite grasp the Vatican being ok with ventilators and feeding tubes to unnaturally keeping alive a body that is trying to die. In the 1970’s they supported Karen Ann Quilan’s very Catholic parents removing her from life support and letting nature takes its course. They’ve also been fine with allowing families to “pull the plug” when needed. Why a different view when it comes to some of these babies? Is it dependent on the parent’s wishes? (If so that also seems odd just because if a life and death matter can be up to parents in those cases, then why not abortions too?)
I only ask because the Catholic Church tends to maintain a consistency in their doctrine and overall philosophy with these matters that is sorely lacking in the born-again fundie crowds.

To me, forced abortion is the REAL definition of "anti-choice."
Women who would be willing to abort a disabled children would also be more likely to do screenings for defects IMNSHO. My own personal experience is that the pregnancies that lead to severely disabled babies also frequently cause serious complications in the mother, and that might be the main reason why they might choose an early induction, and no treatment beyond comfort care if the baby is born alive.
I have also read, and mentioned elsewhere in this thread, that by many accounts, children with Down Syndrome are almost nonexistent in Iceland, which makes me wonder if the parents really did choose not to have them, or were coerced into it or the babies were not cared for after birth.
