It is. Jesus himself even said that adultery was between a married man and a woman who wasn't his first wife. He never mentioned unmarried people. Unmarried sex was considered "fornication" and not "adultery"

Which is the problem.

Sex is meant to be an act between a husband and a wife for the purpose of having kids. It's not something you do with a random woman just to feel good. Doing that essentially removes marriage from the equation thus making Christian marriages less important.
