The Absolute Worst Ways to Recommend Something to Somebody

don’t ever build something up too much for the other person or it will never meet their expectations and they’ll be disappointed

If anything be vague, or build it down instead but say it’s worth watching anyway which doesn’t make sense now that I say it.
I kinda do something similar. Someone earlier mentioned the "it gets good XX hours in" thing--in my case I will admit that sometimes the beginning is hard to sit through (this is sadly all too common, and having some writing experience myself I can say its not always the writers at fault).

Usually good stuff does still have something to latch onto at the beginning though.

"You only have ten days to live. I recommend watching Breaking Bad while in hospice."
What, did a long-haired ghost girl crawl out of the TV to recommend it?

Making it something emotional.

I hate when people act like they really personally care if I follow their recommendations or not. It makes me want not to more than anything.

And sometimes they do really care, but the emotional blackmail instantly puts me off.

"This song has a deep meaning behind it. You have to listen to it to understand it." That only makes me not want to listen to it more and it's always some pretentious hipster song.
The problem is you! You need to really listen to "Surfin Bird" to grasp the nuances and if you fail to do this and not cry tears of transcendent emotion you're a lesser person in my eyes.

I once recommended an Egoraptor video to a couple of my friends and, while we were watching it, I realized halfway thru that it was the most unfunny shit that I had ever watched. I don't know why I recommended it. My friends were stone-faced. I tried to tell them they could stop watching , but they said "No...We'll finish it..." still stonefaced, and we had to sit there in silence and finish it, all the while I felt myself dying inside. They may have felt that they were doing me a favor by continuing on, but they weren't. The video finished, a friend picked out another video, and everyone was back to laughing again, which seemed to twist the knife in even harder.

This thread's topic led to one of my favorite Foamy the Squirrel rants::

“It really opens your eyes to X topic” when they recommended I watch some gay documentary about Mexicans drinking too much Coca Cola.

“It’s like current day thing politics” when they recommend whatever slop du jour which is currently Invincible or The Boys nonsense.

I prefer it when I was recommended “hey watch this Mexican death cult doc on youtube because it’s just fucked” or “watch Caleb Hammer berate retarded millenials because you probably are gonna end up there.”
