Biscuits and gravy has been mentioned, but can we take a moment to just appreciate the humble biscuit?
So simple. So good. Slather it with butter, or honey, or jam... eat it with sausage gravy, or even just regular gravy as a side with a roast dinner... stick some egg and cheese and meat in it... stick chicken in it... Mix raisins or blueberries, cinnamon, icing... put strawberries and whipped cream on it and you've got strawberry shortcake... It's yet another incredibly versatile, simple staple of traditional American cuisine...
And yet it doesn't exist in the rest of the world. Like, at all. Canada has them. Mexico has them, at least at KFC in Mexico. But beyond that? It vanishes, as far as I can tell. It's purely a North American thing. I've tried to evangelize the good word of the Biscuit to friends abroad, and they just... it doesn't work. you can't explain what it is ("So it's like an unflavored scone? A dense bread roll?"), and even when I give them a recipe and walk them through making them step by step, they just... react with a great "meh".
Why? Biscuits are love!
