There's lots of aspects to being self sufficient (whether as a goal or as a result of outside issues).

Which would be your biggest concern, and how would you try to fix it?

What is the scenario though?
*edit* I guess in many cases of apocalyptic scenarios, a clean water supply and foraging would be my main concerns. More so the latter, because foraging can’t support the levels of population we have now

No pl but without access to certain meds my life would go downhill real fast and it’s what worries me the most. I hope adjusting diet, knowing what’s in my food and changing environmental factors would mitigate things enough. Using a plant as an aspirin substitute is quite different from getting chemo or something specialized you depend on. I really don’t have a solution and I pray things never collapse enough in my lifetime that it becomes an issue.

Any, really. Anything that would disrupt any or all of the things we've come to rely on in the last 50-100 years or so...supermarkets, electricity, gas, fuel etc.

Look at what happened just a few years ago. I've got to admit, I didn't see the bog roll shortage coming 😂 milk and bread, yeah, but bog roll?! The mind boggles.

How would you deal with food shortages? Are you an experienced forager? Would you bug-in and grow food?

@Haloperidol almost the same. I could get by on poppy tea and cannabis oil for the pain, but I'd be fucked for the progression of the disease. I used to be about 85/90% self sufficient before that, but I can barely function now. And that's WITH the bastard medication.

So I'd probably just chuck myself in the river, unless I could start a cult or something 😆

Hmmm. Perhaps I would try to, but any stationary living situation restricts an individual in a survival situation. Then again, a commune of individuals is always stronger than one. If your property is especially valuable, it’s only a matter of time until another group overtakes your plot of land unless there is established control. As for foraging, that’s tricky too considering current day population, coupled with the dangers and death sentences that come with individual reliance in nature without medical intervention. I’d say crops is the way to go if you have a somewhat stable community. The lone wolf shit doesn’t work when there’s a whole society against you

Have you read 'last light' and/or 'after light' by Alex Scarrow? Tis all about that particular quandary. You'd get minced once people started to starve and move out of the cities.
After light is the best and most realistic IMO, last light comes across as a bit far fetched, altho TBF, any actual dystopia-inducing event would seem far fetched IRL. Covid did at first didn't it? We forget how comfy we are these days.

Links to free DLs if you or anyone else wants em. I really started to look at things from a survival rather than self-sufficiency angle after reading these. Enjoy!

(fuxsake, can't find After Light! Give me a mo)

A space makes all the difference!

Originally I said water but I'm changing it to other. Water beats food because 3 days vs 3 weeks but I'm going with "community" or whatever word you want to use but basically just some fucking home boys.
You should have some already if only because everything breaks and a lot of jobs just require multiple people.
If you want to consider the prepper/societal collapse angle of it, without some group of people backing you up you can't do anything really. If you wanted to go it alone you would need to hull up with no contact, living on your own supplies well society fell apart, shitted around for a while, developed some form of stable governing system and began the rebuilding process. Then and only then could you safely emerge from your bunker.
Even if it's just a temporary regional disaster do you really want to rely on fema to get your road passable or the cops to keep the looters away?

Added the option, good point, well made.

Community IS the best way to get through any shade of tough times, yet it's the biggest thing we've lost touch with IMO.

One thing I loved to see and be part of at the beginning of covid was loads of community/mutual aid groups springing up. I'm old enough to remember when it was the norm (towards the end of it at least) and I've said for years that it's the biggest factor in the crumbling of society. That was when I was still a female Bruce Willis as well 😂 not a spakka like I am now. Unless I can start a cult and just tell people what I know rather than be able to do it myself, I'll be one of the first against the wall 🫡🔫

I hope that the next emergency in my lifetime isn't an EMP or anything else that will fuck with my lectrics. I'm solar and genny powered (12v stuff is 🤯 now!) I've gotten so reliant on it now, I'd be fucked without it. I second-guess things I've known and taken for granted for years, it's fucken weird.

Anyhoo...poo. I know none of you (unless you've lived without a flushing bog for x amount of time) have considered it. Dig a hole (easy on the move) a long drop (if you settle somewhere.

Where will you leave your shit if you're not wiping it on the walls (or throwing it at your mother figure?)

Uh. What?

As others said, it really depends what scenario you mean OP.

For a general SHTF scenario, it's pragmatism. I made a whole thread about this a while ago, but long story short a lot of preppers have this fallout style scenario in mind where the bombs fall, they grab their bug out bag with a shotgun and a can of beans, and homestead in the wilderness for a decade with nothing but a knife and a solar farm. I like Mad Max as well, but non of that is really practical for a number of reasons. Far more likely SHTF scenarios are things like the pandemic, a bank run, Russia Ukraine, or the LA fires. You gas mask and cupboard of non-perishable mint sauce is going to help there.

The pandemic showed a lot of us where our priorities lay, and how to wipe our own arses didn't it (figuratively and literally!)
We never considered that something like the flu epidemic would hit us. With the advances of the last 30years, 1918 seems a lot further away than it did in 1990.

Good thing about it tho, 12v stuff is coming on leaps and bounds. I would have struggled more when I was still on paraffin lamps!

Any advice on starting out with 12v setups? I'd love to do microgrids like start with one room, maybe an office ran off some solar panels powering a laptop, lights and a radio.

Voted other.
Being decently charismatic & using that beforehand to establish good standing with others/building up a higher trust in your direct surroundings goes a very, VERY long way & is something very overlooked it seems.
You might read that and think "yeah duh" but whenever I visit a bigger city/different neighborhood or talk to friends from such areas the difference is astounding.

No matter how much you prep, if you're being an anti-social, isolationist shut in retard, sure you can shut yourself off from the world, but eventually that world's going to come knocking.
What you do  now makes the difference between that world knocking at your door holding ready to make your life extraordinarily difficult, or, if it's knocking on your door with a helping hand to offer in your time of need.
