Throughout my life, I've been on many forums with many different forum software. I have grown fond of many specific ones, but one stood out as one I truly hated and despised. (Discourse)
I'd love to hear other's opinions on forum software. While my opinions solely stem from Nostalgia and aesthetics as opposed to how it works under the hood, I feel mine are irrelevant to the tech savvy and experienced like Null, or people who know a lot about forum software.
If I had to rank the forum software from best to worst, my list would be:
TIER LIST
A
MyBB
BXenforo

VBulletin

Invision
CSimpleMachines

phpbb

fluxBB

i don't like how in phpbb you need to set everything carefully and individually or else you will shoot yourself in the foot and restrict access to the boards as an admin
vbulletin may be nice but who the fuck pays 200 bucks for forum software lmfao

vBulletin with a big fat asterisk that version 5 doesn't count (Version 4 only sort-of counts) and that Internet Brands did a great job at killing it.
Also I'd knock SMF up a tier. I liked that software and the 2.1 version is even better.

Ruforo but it's under construction. Near definitely would've pulled some fuckshit anyway, but I do kind of wish he didn't "kill himself" and instead did negotiate with Null where he could work on the new forum software.

I don't like to swear too much but I gotta say Discourse fucking sucks. I got PTSD from just having to bear witness to that shit on the Automation game forums man. How the hell are you gonna have pageless, infinite scrolling on a forum thread with thousands of replies?

As to the others, I've seen all those listed software used in at least one forum I've browsed in the past, and I'd say they all seemed generally alright, just that some felt rather dated. Still rather biased against Invision though because I remember the day the DoomWorld forums switched from VBulletin to that and I thought it was ugly as sin. I still think it kinda sucks.
Xenforo is honestly the best though. The few remaining modern-looking, actually-usable forums I've seen in the modern day all use Xenforo.
