Bats have been federally protected ever since white nose came to the US and started devastating bat populations.

Most birds are also federally protected, including active nests. For some reason people love doing tree work during nesting season and commit Migratory Bird Act violations accordingly.

I know Canadian geese suffer a bad reputation for being common birds that poop their body weight on a daily basis, and of course for be associated with the Peoples Rebulic of Canada. However these guys were too cute.

I'm a fucking sucker for geese, because goslings imprint on humans pretty easily. They'll follow you around, call for you, nest in your hair, and everything else. They're little cuddlebugs, and they're so chubby and soft. I've been halfheartedly joking with my husband about getting a guard goose...

I've also been looking into a different chicken breed to raise, because I saw a YouTube short with these lil guys. They're Serama or kikiriki chiciens, and they're an Oriental, ornamental breed. They're similar to Japanese bantams in how they stand, but they're fucking small.

(This is where I learned about them, and these are part Turken, which is a breed of naked-neck chickens)

Is it bad that I almost can't help but lift a hand and say 'Hi!' in a happy voice to every bird with its foot up? That's what I do with the Feathery Asshole in this household. He does that, shouts 'Hi' and then ducks his head and grumbles for scritches until you comply. Or he gets to chomp a finger. Whatever floats his boat.

Oh fuck, that sucks. I'll ensure the Feathery Asshole gets a stick of string cheese tomorrow - he's sleeping right now and is liable not only to shriek, but to deglove a finger if I interact with him right now.

Update on the goslings. They are noticeably bigger since the first post. Still fluffy and cute. Parent geese are still pretty protective, will hiss and posture if I get too close. I tend to see them on my way out in the afternoon, so will start to keep some bread in my truck to feed them.

There are long-tailed tits nesting near my house somewhere, I hear them going pipipipi and see them flying about with moss in their beaks. They're one of my favourite birds so I'm delighted.
I also have a flock of sparrows that live nearby and that serve as my alarm clock on my days off as they start cheeping once the sun comes up. Favourite neighbours tbh.

Spring migration is a special time. Getting to hear new bird songs and welcoming back summer birds is like balm to the soul. Hope the gold finchies come back soon, my juncoes already left.

I have scrub jays in my yard year round. They are out and about in the rain with the robins when other birds are keeping dry. Had some fun with one the other day while watering the garden. He was perching on my clothesline and I would spray him every now and then. Soaked him pretty good. He didn’t seem to mind because he kept coming back a couple seconds after shaking off the water. Hopefully it helped him stay cool, it’s starting to get into the 80’s.
