I don't remember where I read it, but I recall the showrunner (Kripke? Jew guy) taking issue with what Amazon wanted to do with The Boys and it was in regards to Homelander hence why it's ending at season 5.
Since it's pretty much unanimous people watch it for him, I think Amazon want to keep him alive or something. Put him on ice instead of outright killing him so they can re-use him for something else at some point. Hell maybe they even wanted to redeem him or some shit, or at least have the moment in the comic where Homelander realises what he's done and technically is what allows the day to be saved by injuring Black Noir/Clonelander enough to be vulnerable to The Boys.
I might be misremembering, but don't think Homelander even does any majorly horrific shit in the comics (besides the sexual assault/hazing of Starlight?) that he frequently does in the show. It's contentious because people hate the twist but it's just Black Noir gaslighting him in conjunction with his actual blackouts that made him believe he was an actual monster - he didn't even rape Butcher's wife - so his entire motive for seizing control in the end (where he actually does commit murder) was just him embracing the dark side he thought he had, but didn't. I think comic fans were probably okay with Homelander changes from the get-go because they hated the twist, and Soldier Boy is also a lot more memorable, but there's one character in particular I hated changes to because it was done for the most predictable reason imaginable: they were rich. Tek Knight.
Similar to how the Fallout TV show is probably going to fuck over Mr House, turning a character who was arguably not all that bad into a much more evil caricature because they're rich, Tek Knight is one of the few sincerely good superheroes. He was a degenerate (due to a brain tumour) and still died saving a life, regardless of what he perceived the situation to be.

The showrunners might just give Homelander V1 in order to raise the stakes, given we've seen Homelander could lose in a fistfight against other supes easily given what we've seen in the show (Soldier Boy + Butcher would've killed Homelander had he not flown away and the script had them holding back), which'll functionally change nothing in the story but make it so beating Homelander will require more than a 2 v 1 or something. Bonus points if Butcher is so off the deep end that he delivers it himself so the response to Homelander has to be nuclear.
They might rip off the end of Barry and have it so Butcher is so hellbent on getting revenge (killing all supes) that in the narrative, Homelander becomes the Hero for trying to stop him and only a handful of people know the truth.
