I saw writer of the boys saying that this is a fair universe where you get punished for doing "bad" things and rewarded for doing "good" and you can see it with vought on ice where the actors who mocked the happy holidays trend got immediately executed. I think it's a pretty telling example because they didn't bother demonising them so the only thing that warranted their execution was singing a conservative song. If I were the intended audience my reaction would be anger at the actors and the glee when they were murdered, which is kinda jarring if you think about the implications and how it relates to their behaviour in real world.

It's actually kind of striking just how little The Boys themselves actually influence the plot, like 90% of the forward plot development is pushed by The Seven or just Homelander himself.
The Boys involvement in any particular season basically goes like this.
Butcher says "We have to fookin kill O'mander to avenge me fookin wife and wife's boyfriend's fookin son whom he dun fookin killed!"
Six filler episodes where nothing happens.
They find a mguffin that can kill Homelander
The mguffin doesn't work
Season ends.

You would think they'd buck the trend with the final season, but besides A-Train none of the heroes have even died yet. I guess there's Firecracker, but she wasn't good in the slightest.

Honestly this show is one of the most egregious examples I've ever seen of the writers giving in to all of their worst instincts. The first season was good, and seasons 2 and 3 were still pretty entertaining even if they lacked direction. Season 4 was a mess and a sign they had no idea what they were doing, and they aren't even trying to write a decent ending with season 5. Its like the writers room is perpetually high and just think "what would be funny" while scrolling twitter. Thus, nothing really has any coherence, you have alot of things that are vaguely entertaining if you completely turn your brain off, and random references to whatever the topic of the day was when they were writing it. They're pretty much coasting off the fact they have a few great characters (homelander, butcher, to a much lesser extend the deep) that people like. All of the writing around them sucks though, and it shows. I think it really shows how little the show has actually progressed when they're using the plane video from season 1 as blackmail still, when we're in the 5th and final season.
