The chip shortage - Where did my fucking chips go?

So around the release of Ryzen 3, people were starting to bitch about a GPU shortage because of cryptominers and ethereum, but this spiraled into some IOT vendors (Shelly beeing one) warning about price hikes because there's not around esp8266 microcontrolers to go around. In the beginning I thought this was about TSMC and them being absolutely blasted with orders from Apple and AMD. But then it spiralled into car factories being stopped, network gear being out of stock and pundits are saying that we're not going to get out of the shortage until 2023, so this is way past being a TSMC problem.

What fucking gives? It's not like we ran out of sand, and growing silica wafers is not exactly rocket science. Notice I'm not saying chip manufacturing, as that is pretty fucking hard to do, but the Fabs are pointing fingers at wafer shortages.

It's a mess, is what it is. There's numerous factors. Pandemic stuff started it. When that hit, everyone shifted into making products they thought would sell, which is a big deal in automotive since they weren't making those products for a while. Then there's huge demand right now too, *and* Taiwan's having a drought *and* Texas had their power outage which shut down fabs there for weeks.

Everyone's decision to outsource all their fabs is looking just lovely right now.

Nvidia ships GPUs directly to cryptominers.

AMD needs to make desktop CPUs, GPUs, and console chips all on limited TSMC capacity.

TSMC has suffered from droughts and fires.

Intel can supply you with lots of great 14nm chips.
Make sure you turn the N word slider on so you can say it.

Maybe if scalpers/scalping could be somewhat regulated, we wouldn't be having these issues. I sperged out over those Sanrio Amiibo cards because like with fucking PC parts, no you can't just have some stupid Nintendo shit either. If it's decently popular or hyped up, you will have assholes who just feel the need to fuck over everyone else for their almighty dollar.

I get too MATI here kek.

Botting has become very affordable, it's actually cheaper and easier to do than crypto and they can have bots buy up all the stock online since zero retailers have precautions against all the different types of bots.

Say what you want against malls and physical stores, but they were able to combat scalping since people needed to show up in person.

Eh, that's sort of the point? At least with the Sanrio example, Nintendo purposefully made it a "Target online exclusive". If they simply kept it brick and mortar, no online bullshit, then that situation wouldn't have happened so easily. To the company, it was a success, but to everyone else who wasn't so lucky we're now forced to go the bootleg route or hopelessly shill to some eBay faggot who botted. But of course, it's not like botting will be regulated, ever.

Scalpers are a symptom of the problem, not the cause. The underlying issue is supply cannot meet demand. If Nvidia was shipping enough hardware to legitimate retailers to meet demand, there would be no profit for scalpers to even bother flipping cards.

While true, still would have zero sympathy if they disappeared. Same with the chucklefucks that enable them by buying.

Videogames are an investment just like the stock market, but I won't learn to trade stocks because they don't have colorful characters on them that appeal to me as a man child.

You see I can play games and then decades down the road when my currently non-existent child is old enough for college I'll definitely sell them and be able to pay for the whole thing on that alone.

I'd just like to interject that it's not only GPUs and CPUs that are in short supply now. The scalpers are the least of the problem. Shit like networking gear is starting to get hard to come by, with DRAM and NAND parts coming next. Wonder if phone manufacturers are starting to feel the heat
